Hello, I am 66 yrs old and grew up with 1960's ~ 1980's era Nikon cameras and lenses. I am an avid Nikon collector now. I was toying with the idea of leaving a detailed comment about the self-timer, DOF preview and a rebuttal to whomever thinks that these are "lame", but decided to scrap that. I'll make just a brief comment. Great video. I love the Nikon F2 (along with the F, F3 and various Nikkormat models from that time-period). All are top shelf in construction and operation. The non-AI, AI and AI-S manual focus lenses are superb. Looking forward to your next video. Even though there is a big age gap (my kids are around your age), I do enjoy and appreciate your sense of humor, style and love for film photography. Looking forward to your next video. Best, Steve

My F2 took a rather mysterious journey into my possession. It was given to me last year by a buddy who just happened to have it rotting away in his room after learning that I had started getting into film photography, thanks in large part to this channel. He said that back in college some guy he only loosely knew owed him money. Not having any money to speak of, the guy eventually produced a Nikon F2 from... somewhere, and offered it to my buddy as payment. Not knowing what else to do, he accepted it without asking questions, and then promptly forgot about it until my entry into this crazy hobby. After cleaning it up, it works great, and is one of my more prized weapons.

Maybe this is a double comment because I sometimes watch and re-watch your videos while I'm working, even if I've already watched one youtube's algorithm will circle me back around to you, so if I'm a dummy and have already said this, I apologize. I got a Nikon F with the T Finder a few months back and loved it so much that I shortly after found a great deal on a Nikon F with the FTN finder. I tracked down Nikkor lenses for the pair in 28mm f3.5, 50mm f2.0, 135mm f2.8 (that one has a built-in retractable lens hood that deserves nothing less than the word 'nifty') and a 43-86mm zoom f3.5. I love the pair, and they are beast machines for making great images. I imagine the F2 is equally well built from your descriptions. I love your videos and not only are you funny as s+++ in your deadpan delivery, but your work inspires me. So just putting that out there for you to do with as you will. You and Lucy Lumen are like, two of my favorite photo people in the world. Keep it up. No, please....seriously keep it up....the worlds burning down around us and your videos, inspiration and feeding of my aspirations toward being a legit artist and pushing me in the medium are one of the things keeping me going these days. Love all of it.

Good enough for Kubrick on Full Metal Jacket. He decided that since basically the whole Vietnam War was photographed through Nikkor glass, he would do the same for full authenticity and basically pre-empted the whole trend of rehousing vintage stills lenses for filmmaking by about 40 years. He was also anal as fuck about lens sharpness and colour rendering too, so if they were good enough for him and his 100+ takes of Animal Mother telling Joker he's gonna tear him a new asshole, they're probably good enough for a hipster shooting California on Portra.

Great cameras. Got my F2A (improved meter head, but not the AS), and FE2 in 1979/1980 while at stationed at Yokota AB near Tokyo in Japan. I have to say I like the FE2 more due to it being smaller and easier to handle, plus the motor drive makes it a beast. But no matter, both are still in excellent condition, hardly a mark on the black paint. But I have been smitten by my new Sony cameras. I still take some photos but I really miss the days I spent in the dark room developing negatives and making prints in black and white. Automating film development today sucks, too expensive. Now I just enjoy shooting with the incredible Sony cameras (A7R3, A74 and a6600). Will I ever sell my Nikons? Maybe if someone comes to me with a suitcase full of cash.

That camera gave perfect exposures for the whole month, in 60C below zero at altitudes up to 6,500m (21,000 feet) on Mera Peak, despite shocking weather and very rough hiking. I was a little late to the F2 bodies. I started with a new F in about 1970, and took forever to move onto an F3. It was spectacular. I skipped the F4 as well, and the F5 was tremendous. But then, in the process of filling in the voids, got myself a nice F2T, and run the DP-12 on it, making it that F2AS you mentioned. It’s a very good meter for the incredible F2. The most similar camera to my F2T is one of my Leicaflex SL2 bodies. They seem very similar. Of course, I couldn’t afford a Leicaflex SL2 when they came out back in the mid-70s, but time solves a lot of issues! But, I’m basically a Nikon guy, with about 50-60 Nikkor lenses. You make both an informative and entertaining video! Your dry humor reminds me of my best friend in high school, but we’re now approaching 70 and done with being responsible. Good job.

F2 was far from basic. It was in its day what is one of the most advanced 35mm camera systems on the market. So reliable, it remained on sales shelves right next to the brand new F3. Because even back then old timer pros were uncertain of new technology of the electronic shutter & advanced micro computer TTL flash of F3 Today, it may be more camera than an amateur or hobbyist may need but it’s flippin awesome fun to use

Literally came here to post this. Hasn't come up a lot in my shooting with mine, but when it has it's been *super handy* (coincidentally also the title of my pornstar memoirs). No more fumbling with a stopwatch function on a watch or phone while also trying to trip the cable release to close the shutter at the right time when doing longer exposures on a tripod, just set the timer and hit go for anything up to 10 seconds. For a camera old enough to be yelling about the kids on its lawn, the mechanics of the timer in mine have also been absolutely spot-on accurate across the whole range of exposure times it can do.

Jokes aside, I love that my F doesn't need to have the lever half open to use the light meter. Dunno who thought that going from an on/off button to that would be better. The FM2 poked me in the eye every time I wanted to like it. For the record, Nikkor lenses are amazing for their age. Oh boy Jason with his subtle flex of the rare Titanium Nikon F2. Jokes aside, I'm glad someone badass here is giving the F2 some overdue love. Everybody wax poetic of the Nikon F3 and the history of the F, but the F2 gets rare attention despite being arguably the camera with specs many film aficionados want nowadays; fully mechanical, 1/2000 shutter speed, a built in light meter (depending on the head), good and easily accessible lens, and aesthetic. I have the F, F2, and F3, but my goodness is the F2 a fun beast to use.

Not to mention the F2 was built better than most tanks. Can be used to frame houses, pound tent stakes and if someone tries to mug you hit them in the head with it.

I’ve been waiting for this video since I discovered an F2 in my grandpas attic a couple of years back, and thus found your guide to 35mm! 🖤

nice camera! I was on the hunt for an all mechanical nikon to use as my main 35mm slr. I considered the f2 and I really wanted an fm3a. I ended up getting a good deal on a minty fm2t this spring and it is my favorite 35mm camera ever. It is just as nice and way more useful than the leica m3 i once had (much less expensive too). It's perfect imo

I have a canon old f1, And it has the multi lever that is the timer and has the function of using it to preview exposure on non compatible lenses for the system other than the FD lenses, ex. the FL lenses and even the R leica mount copy canon lenses. for some of my n fe lenses it allows the preview of exposure and some it does not. How does that work with lenses on the f2? also i love the self timer. I dont photograph myself. I use it for landscape instead of a cable release, for immobile subjects. I have a soft shutter convex release button that I have threaded on the shutter button, that I enjoy using so much I don’t like taking it off often.

Oh, man. Those hand gestures! Good to see Mr. Hand's next of kin getting some supporting roles. All you need now is Sluggo to make an appearance. . .maybe hammering down on a soft-touch shutter button. (p.s. Love my Nikon FM. Keep it simple.)

Video @ 3:21 "Turkey Cub sandwich" - Actually, the 'T' setting has another useful function. Using it in conjunction with the 'numbers' on the self-timer, it allows for accurate timed exposures up to 10 seconds ! - The Nikon F2 model is the finest Nikon EVER built - - -

Speaking of Nikon's durable and robust construction, I remember reading one of those full back-page ads for the Nikon F, IIRC, in either Modern Photography or Popular Photography Magazine, in around 1968 or 1969, showing a photo of a Nikon F, lying in deep snow on the top of Mount Olympus in Greece, where it had landed after having been accidentally dropped from an aeroplane by an unnamed landscape photographer who had been attempting to get some aerial photos. The ad stated that the camera had been retrieved about a year later by some mountain climbers, brought back down to safety, and was still functioning perfectly, with very little, (or no), damage, either to the body or the lens, (although I would guess that the meter battery must have been flat after 12 months in the snow). I've never owned any Nikon equipment, but I was very impressed with that testimonial, (which I'm 99.999999% sure was genuine).
