Wanting to get back to my film roots for nostalgic purposes, I took a chance on an eBay purchase of an FE because the seller was a small local camera shop here in Oklahoma. And it turned out to be in near mint condition with everything still working. One of my favorite features is the little extra window and needle that show you your F-stop and shutter speed in the viewfinder. I like it so much that I traded my Sony gear for a Nikon Zf and Zfc just to get that old feeling in my everyday work. Fortunately, beyond the retro design, these cameras also handily outperform the Sonys I had in color and autofocus. 😃 So in a roundabout way, the FE made my everyday work easier in 2024. 😉

Nice review of the Nikon FE Dave! The FE was (and still is) a great camera. When it came out (I was still in HS), 4 of my photo friends bought it. One of them liked it so much that he bought another a couple of months later. I did not get one since I already had the Nikon FM. When I was in college, I did buy the Nikon FE2 which was the upgrade to the FE. Just a quick correction, the FE had a top speed of 1/1000 and not 1/4000. The changes to the FE2 over the FE were: 1. 1/4000 vs 1/1000 top shutter speed. 2. Flash sync speed 1/250 vs 1/125 3. TTL flash 4. Brighter viewfinder screen 5. Battery check light was removed. I never had a problem with this as the batteries lasted quite a while and I always carried a couple of spares. As for the long exposures, my FE2 like the FE is capable of ridiculously long exposures. When I did night or very low light photography, I've had times in the 2-5 minute range and some even longer. My most memorable one was done under moonlight and it went for more than 40 minutes!

The 1/4000 happens in auto mode according to many sources . But I have no way of testing this . On the dial 1/1000 . I'll keep researching .

One of the resources I got the numbers from . Ken Rockwell .
@daveruskphotography2 жыл бұрын
There are a few others that say the same . It's not in the nikon specs . Plus the shutter speeds in aperture mode are seamless as well like the FG .

Not sure if Rockwell is that reliable of a source.

I believe that all Nikons with AP mode has stepless shutter speeds.

The Nikon F3 is the most intelligently manufactured film device for capturing images. Just holding one, makes the horrors of this world disappear.
