Hello Josh, I watched your video and enjoyed it very much as a Nikon shooter. After selling my Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR II I bought a secondhand Nikon 600mm f/4.0 VR and I'm proud to own this magnificent lens. It's really heavy and that's the reason I bought a Benro tripod almost like yours ( the larger version I saw for a good price) and the gimbal head Benro GH5C was on sale too. That's almost my favorite set to use except now I use a Nikon D5 but I ordered a Nikon D850 and waiting to receive it soon, can't wait to work with the D850...... Thanks for your great videos here on youtube.

I use an AFI 600mm that's the first one Nikon made with AF. I've been shooting with it since I shot with Slide film! The Cameras changed over the years but the lens still works great with digital, You can't beat the image quality. My images with that lens are as good as any I see on the internet or Magazines! I now have other newer lens and they are great but I will never give up my old lens!

Very nice. Out of all the Nikkor long prime lenses, past and present, the AF-I versions are my favorite. The IQ is amazing of course but the build qulity is peak Nikon; just built like tanks. Admittedly, they have the weight to show for it, but at least there's no polycarbonate and magnesium. Plus, they just exude quality with that 'crinkle' finish.

Can you indicate the exact boiler plate? There are several confusing variations, and the used market makes it worse by mixing some of the specs. I'm looking at a: AF S Nikkor 600mm f/4 D II ED from 2005-2006 era. I would hope that it is the better AF, and I know it is pre-VR.

Hi Josh, new comment from a lurker -- thanks for all your videos. I love the way you speak honestly about the struggles of bird photography (and the gear that comes with it) without sugar-coating things. I've been trying to photograph birds for over a decade and just recently got a D850 with a 500mm f4 AF-S i. It's definitely not perfect (man, bird photography is so freakin hard), but I'm loving it. Getting the chance to spend the morning or late afternoon with birds captured in the lens (and those that aren't) is still all worth it. I do still have that gear jealousy from time to time when I see others' images, but I'm trying to be happy with what I have and learn to make it work better. At the end of the day this will never be my day job so I'm okay with that. Peace.

Greetings Josh. Thank you for all the effort you put in making and uploading videos. Always descent and concise content that is a pleasure to watch. If I may ask you a question.. you're using a non-VR 600mm f4 lens. Can you tell me whether IBIS does the job there once you're pairing the lens with Z6 / Z6II ? I am thinking of buying this lens but I am hesitating because I don't know whether Z6 IBIS will be able to help me out reducing some of the camera shake when needed. Can you briefly talk through your experience pairing Nikon's rocket launcher with Z6 with IBIS and how does that compare to d850 without body stabilization?

Like you, I have a limited budget. I ended up with a A7Rii ($1200 used - two years ago) and the Nikkor 500mm f/4 P ($1400 on eBay), which is manual focus. Then add another $1000 for new tripod and gimbal head. Moving subjects are going to be tough for me, but burst release helps. Focus is super smooth despite the lens being 20 years old. Mirrorless EVF with 10x zoom lets me nail the focus on static subjects. Built in IBIS gives me image stabilization, too. For now I'm one happy camper.

Jason B, all I can say is keep looking and ask all your "shopping" friends (most importantly non-photography women budget shoppers) where to find deals. A friend of mine suggest a big internet wholesaler in electronic gear (she went shopping for me looking for deals). She found the 600mm f/4 (new version) "open box" for nearly 30 percent off. I was a bit skeptical, but they had a 30 day return policy, the lens came with full manufacturer's warrantee, and they were a certified dealer. In addition, they gave bonus points that could be used for purchase of other items (mine went for TC) and free delivery. When the lens arrived it was in perfect condition and wrapped as new. The minute you start using these primes you'll likely realize why you bought it. I still am with Nikon, but if you are using Canon then the newer 600mm is only 6 lbs. When Canon comes out with their mirrorless version 600mm that may be when to purchase the older DSLR version. Once you use it, you'll understand, but have to convince others in the household it was worth it :-)

Instead of that your content makes it seem as though you and I are setting on the ground together while we shoot birds. I like the fact that your sticking with the D850 when everyone else says you need a new Sony A1 or Cannon R5 with sticky eye autofocus. I agree the eye stuff is nice but when a photographer sees a awesome photo that you've created using your D850 they know that you captured the image the right way, the old school way, the way that photographers have had to work for since the dawn of the DSLR. I think you would also get that extra bit of RESPECT from real photographers for doing it that way. I think you would be well served to grab yourself a D500 to go along with your D850 because its almost exactally the same camera in the hands and the pixel density even leans towards the D500. It would give you an extra 300mm on your lens too. Anyway, I really like watching your stuff and I will continue to do so. Keep up the great work! NIKON FOREVER!!

I look at the prices for these lenses and ask myself how many images would i need to sell in order to recoup the outlay and then I ask myself would i have been able to get those images with a cheaper alternative. I am extremely fortunate to have had unlimited use of the EF 800mm f5.6L for the past few years but I will be retiring soon and will have to live without it. That is going to be a very sad day for, as you say, there is most certainly a special quality about these top lenses. A very good video with top notch images.

Hey Josh, thank you for the time and effort you put into helping others. I have some brief qualifying remarks. First, I picked up a new "open box" 600mm f/4 FL ED VR 8 lb version fully warranted for just a little more than the older version. I had been looking for a year. I believed I would take it out more if it weighted less. I still believe that is true. You do realize you said you didn't see the point in shelling out the extra money for a little drop in weight or for the VR and then said the 600mm f/4 prime just provides that "little extra" of compression etc. Just sayin. That said, I can't compare the 600mm f/4 to all other lenses in it's focal length range, but as you already mentioned if you're into wildlife photography, and spend many hours at it, the 600mm primes do leave you with an esthetic quality to those that appreciate it. One other reason for these primes of course is the f/4 aperature. If you shoot at high shutter speeds or in lower light, you will appreciate this often. The lowest shutter speed no matter what version depends on resolution of camera body, hand held, tripod, or monopod, and movement of the subject. The D850 is not very forgiving, but like you I've pushed it. For small birds that scatter if you even try to close distance slowly, I've gone to the D500 with the 600mm f/4. Curious if you put the D850 in crop mode (ever) and the IQ vs D500. Wish you much success with your KZbin channel. Thanks again.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
I used to own the d500 and sold it recently to buy the Z6 (needed the video capabilities) I can honestly say that it was tough to tell the difference between my D850 in crop mode and the D500. other than to say that the D850 ISO performance was noticeably better. I can shoot at ISO 6400+ in crop mode with the D850 with very good results. (BTW, the last few images of the Avocet on this video were at ISO 6400 in crop mode.) Bottom line. I felt good losing the D500 knowing I could throw the D850 in crop mode when I needed the extra reach.
@dance2jam3 жыл бұрын
@@BayouJosh Thanks for the reply Josh. I was recently challenged by a fellow photographer to shoot with the D850 in crop mode and leave the D500 alone. The results were surprising, but I would need to side-by-side comparison to see the difference. I'll keep looking and you enjoy the Z6. The few times I use the D850 for video it was amazing (on a fountain display) and absolutely miserable on a moving animal (hand focus, peaking, back screen live view). Battery life (as you mentioned in a recent video) for still is exceptional and I've gotten over 2,000 shots on one batter charge (vertical grip included). Hope Nikon can survive this pivotal year ahead. Again, thanks for the videos.

The 600/4 AFS II is nice but keep in mind Nikon, USA no longer has parts for that lens and consequently stopped servicing, adjusting or even checking it after 2011 no matter what the reason. I found that out after trying a used AFS II that was a bit too soft wide open. However APS (formerly Nikon Morton Grove, Illinois) will still service that lens. The best thing if you really want that type of long glass with limited funds is to buy used but make sure the lens can be returned after a short trial if unsatisfactory. I opted on returning the AFS II and getting a used 600/4E FL ED VR. That sample was tack sharp wide open, something critical if you plan on using a tele-extender for even greater reach. The weight and balance of the new lens is great too.

You buzzard, you! I can’t spring for a Z9 + new, greatest ever lenses with built in tc’s, etc, but watching your video (subscribed at once) has put me over the edge on the purchase decision - which is difficult given the demise of F-mount. Still debating the 400/2.8 vs 600/4…both are fantastic in about any version if the glass is true (and the mechanics) on the sample in question. But it’s almost a commitment to a lifestyle that allows the opportunity for field-work, not just the price of a lens….

I’ve been using a used Canon 600mm F4 with my Nikon Z6ii and I’ve become quite used to better images, much much better. Stunning really. The lens is definitely in the same ballpark of weight. The difference in switching from video to stills on the Z6ii is much better for my use. I used to lust for this lens, I’m quite satisfied with it, don’t notice the weight since I’m on the ground most of the time. I carry a second camera with a 100-400mm for quick grab shots if I can’t maneuver the rig I use but so far it’s the 600mm that gets used most of the time. Now how many times did I use the word use? :) Your images are reminiscent of what I’ve captured recently. Only my second time seeing a Killdeer close up and do to the ‘camo’, I was able to get a nice string of images. Because there were so many birds I actually missed the Killdeer’s takeoff. It is my morning routine before breakfast. A 600mm worth of adrenaline! I don’t feel I’m by myself anymore:)

Exactly why I got into Nikon for wildlife photography because I couldn't afford 13 grand for Sony's 600mm offering. I bough the 600mm F/4 G ED VR also. I paid 6400$ (which was still a lot of money for me) and I can't even tell if it was ever used. It's a heavy beast but I didn't buy it to walk around hand holding. FYI the older AF-D versions are pretty much worthless moving forward because they won't autofocus on the new mirrorless cameras through the FTZ adapter. I see tons of the AF-D flooding the market but thats why they are so cheap right now.
@BayouJosh3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man. that AF-d is certainly outdated. that VR would have been nice. However, i couldn't find one for under $7500 when I purchased My AFS-2. I wish money wasn't an issue.
@Raevenswood3 жыл бұрын
@@BayouJosh for the most part I don't think VR is really even necessary considering how heavy these things are. A good tripod does the job plus moving forward the mirrorless cameras have in body image stabilization so I don't think it's going to be as much of an issue as mirrorless takes over.

Optically, there is little difference between the newer FL and the older G/AF-S models.
