Nikon P1000 Walkthrough

This video is going over the layout of the Nikon P1000. This is to help those who have purchased the camera, either to introduce them to the buttons and doors, or for someone who has already had the camera but needed a reminder. The beginning of the video shows video and photo examples from the camera. The more you know, the less you will feel intimidated with the available settings and features!

Worked full-time as a news photographer for 42 years but I just can't be bothered dragging around a multitude of lenses. This little baby does everything I ever need in one body. It also has a viewfinder (old habits die hard) and a hot shoe for my speed light trigger. I used to carry around 30 kilos of gear. I doubt I would ever use it professionally, but for everyday shooting it is amazing. By the way, ask any Japanese person how to pronounce Nikon and they will tell you it is 100% not Nykon.

definately "a beast", but in a bad way in my opinion (weight, size) How do you like it after 3 months? For what usage? I mean im looking more towards Sony RX10 M4, RX100 M6/7, in the worst case a P950 or a P900 for very cheap. But they all serve the same purpose, much zoom. I mainly shoot a APS-C Canon (R7) with a variety of lenses, mainly on the longer end (small, fast 50mm primes, 150-600mm F6.3 zoom and slow but light and well stabilised 800mm F11 prime.). Wildlife, video, just some "proper" wildlife gear to enjoy shooting with usable results. But for my daily/average stuff, i absolutely love point and shoots. Got recently a cheap Sony W830 (from 2014), 20MP CCD, 8x (25-200mm) zoom lens, incredible results and it fits easily in to a cigarette box (with glued in microfiber cloth my "case" for it) What im mainly looking for is a thing "in between" the small compact camera and my proper main camera which can, depending on the usecase either weight 700g (50mm prime + GoPro on flash shoe) or 3 kg (150-600 F6.3 lens, mixer/amplifier, shotgun mic and GoPro mounted on flash shoe). Because as a camera i can have always in the car, such a superzoom brigde camera sounds interesting. I can do birding in case i dont have my R7 + 150-600 or 800 F11 with me, Its also wide enough for anything else, and it gives "reasonable" quality if you know what you are doing and know its limitations.

Quick tip, you can only format your card if the camera is in airplane mode. Took me a while to figure this out as nobody mentions this fact. 👍👍

What is the best SD cards to use? I have Sandisk extreme pro (red and black) but have lots of Ultra (Red and silver) and Extreme (Red and gold)... basically I am if the red and silver and red and gold are ok to use (as I have many of them) however I know the red and black is likely overall the best.

Great overview. Do you know the difference between Timelapse photo vs video taking? Seems like they both end up producing MP4 video anyway. Not sure when to use the time lapse photo (it shoots multiple pictures with super short interval) vs video. Appreciate if you could answer.

Great question! A video will capture a scene showing real time vs a time lapse video with show an extended amount of time in minutes. For example, if you took a video of the entire phase of the sun setting, it could take as long as an hour long video. If you took a time lapse where it took a photo, say, every 60 seconds and combined it to a video format like a flip book, now you can see the sun setting in just 1 minute vs an hour!

You can use any camera compatible mic like the Rode Videomic or Saramonic Blink500, just depends on the situation and brand you would like. When it comes to a lens, this camera does not have the option to change lenses as it is an all in one build.

Just bought the P1000 - in full Manual mode using LED screen (not viewfinder) when I adjust the aperture or shutter speed there is no change on the display, although M exposure preview is on. Is there a way to see if you have the right exposure before taking a photo?

This is the best camera out there. The only thing below this in all of the point and shoot cameras is p950. Most point and shoots do not do well with bird photography. This is very good value for money.

This is NOT a point and shoot... When the P950 and P1000 are something, then they are zoom binoculars for daylight with (bad) capturing function. The last time i looked for some superzoom bridge cameras and the P1000, RX10 Mk4 etc, they were still very expensive, even 2nd hand. I got a Canon RF 800 F11 for just 600€ 2nd hand, combined with my "affordable" crop camera (1280mm), 4k60 crop mode (2300mm) and digital IS (3100mm) it gives from "very good reach" to "3000mm madness", all in either 32MP (1280mm), 1:1 pixel readout 2300mm for tack sharp 4k60 video or 3100mm with interpolated 4k60 slightly less sharp. Why i compare a lenses price alone vs the "complete" bridge camera? Because the P1000 is basically a LENS. The old, outdated and partially BAD tech around it does not count much in my opinion and is comparable to a 2010 point and shoot with better 1/1,8" CCD. I mean, sure 1280-3000mm (on crop body) lens for 600€ vs a 24-3000mm bridge cam is a bad comparison, especially since its a INTERCHANGEABLE LENS CAMERA and i can configure my EOS R7 for whatever i want and it even boosts old and unstabilised glass with its IBIS (In body image stabiliser)

Greetings, I have a Nikon Coolpix P1000 and it gives me this error when I turn it on. THE CAMERA WILL SHUT OFF TO PREVENT IT FROM OVERHEATING. I would appreciate information on how to solve this problem, since it does not let me do anything. Thank you Jose Antonio

Thank you for watching! This camera takes an SD card, UHS-I and storage wise can take up to 128GB. Make sure the card you get has the U3 symbol so it will not cause an issue with speed.

If you call the P1000 huge you obviously normally use lesser cameras. Ever use the D850 with high power wide-aperture zoom lenses. Or a D5 ? The P1000 is a nice small lightweight camera....

When I refer to the camera as huge, I am comparing it to other point and shoot/bridge options with the same sensor size like the Panasonic FZ80 and FZ300. Of course when you use a full frame sensor camera and attempt to get even a quarter as far that the P1000 reaches, it will be much larger and heavier.

Why do you want to make sure the vibration reduction is off when on a tripod? I understand the tripod will already reduce/eliminate vibration, but what is the harm in just leaving it on?

Great question! What a lot of people don't realize is when the stabilizer is on, and the camera is being stabilized by a tripod or a gimble, the stabilizer can over compensate on attempting to detect body shake and can actually cause shake in photographs, thus giving you images that are not as sharp as they could be.

Flash is for photos only. But you can get an LED light with a shoe mount to put on top of the camera to help!

Can i ask you a Question please? I just got a Nikon P1000, one thing i've noticed that in rooms/areas where there isn't a lot of light, the LCD screen appears to be a bit 'grainy'. Is this normal in Low Light situations, or is something I should be concerned with? Please Reply 🙏🏻

This is common with this camera. With every camera, there is a trade off. With this model, you get a lot of distance, but terrible low light performance. The only way around that graininess is by using a low ISO and adding light to your setting.

Astro with this camera is a fair challenge. It is great for the moon, but not recommended for milky way or galaxies. Your only option to get optimal focus for this situation is manual focus and a lot of trial and error. It is tricky, but it is possible.

Something to consider if you are interested in the P1000: - it has just a smartphone sized sensor! - the lens is a 4,3-540mm, F 2.8 to 8! Resulting in a 3000mm image looking like 3000mm F44 (F/44!!!!) Same goes for the 24mm... they look like F2.8 * 5,5 = 24mm F16! - its HUGE and heavy, to be honest, even my 100-400 (F5.6!) telezoom is barely heavier or bigger. Very special camera for very special usecases, and definately NOT (!!!) if you want good quality images. And no, i dont talk about prints, even for basic viewing on a screen or TV they look pretty bad, just (older) smartphone like

I would ALWAYS prefer the P950 over the P1000.... smaller, cheaper, newer. And if you have ever used 1000mm+... you will know anyways more than 1000mm is more often than not unnecessary and stupid.

@@harrison00xXx P950 is not better in any way than P1000. It was made to put older P900 in the level of P1000. P900 and P950 use the exact same lens, processor etc. P950 has the same "worst possible" image quality as P1000. Like Rtings says in their review, forget P950. Go big or go home. Also if you don't need 1000mm+, get the superior Sony RX10 IV (or III) and crop to better or same image quality below 1000mm. Also one well known youtuber who compared (and uses) P950 and P1000 says they look mostly identical at 2000mm. P1000 can of course go more than that, but the IQ suffers a little bit. It's still better than cropping P950. He also says that at all focal lengths P1000 has slightly better colors and contrast and bokeh. He says he would pick P1000 if he had to choose, even considering size and weight. P950 is of course 100-150 cheaper (who cares) and much smaller if you are weak. I agree with your first message. Having used telephoto lens that alone weights 2 x P1000 it's not bad. Tele lenses are heavy and big. P1000 is a tele lens, not a camera. Well it is, but very bad camera. Very good tele lens for longest focal lengths compared to cropping others.

The size of sensor works with the large lens. I have zero issues with photo quality. Good lighting helps and if you require noise reduction or any type of adjustments.. DxO Photolab6 with Deep Prime XD produces DSLR pics with the P1000. Increasing shutter time along with higher ISO produces great shots with this camera. Any noise can be edited out easily but that is mainly from low light scenarios.

​@@harrison00xXxpeople buy the P1000 for the up to 3000mm. A good tripod plus a body mount that shifts the centre of the P1000 further forward reduces all shake. There is a gentleman in Canada who produces these. To get similar focal length with a DSLR would require spending north of 25k and even then the P1000 would probably produce better astrophotography for just over 1k! The P1000 is an excellent camera if you know what you are doing and have the correct setup.

All three models are designed on the same sensor and sensor, which is a big weakness, I had a p 900, but it sharpened the image very poorly, at high zoom, almost everything was out of focus, so all three cameras are not worth a cent. All that Nikon has changed is zoom, everything else is almost the same. Very bad product for photography, useless indoors, useless at night, good only in good weather and for video recording.

It would have helped if you have provided more images taken by the camera , evidence of it's ability is a far bigger selling point and factor than going thro all the functions which virtually every other channel that has reviewed the same camera does the same .. It gets rather tiresome .. I want to see pictorial evidence of it's ability of capturing .. Sunsets .. , My current camera Sony DSC HX350 is absolutely crap compared to my old Samsung tablet and current samsung phone ... at taking sunset captures It's what i mainly take pics of .. as well of other subject matter ..

Thank you for watching! I also mentioned this on your other comment on another video, please keep in mind these videos are walkthroughs, not reviews. I started making these as a visual aid to those who have difficulty reading the manual. I also have less than a day with each camera to capture photos and video and record a walkthrough, so I cannot capture every photographic possibility with every camera. And while I do have more photos taken with this camera to show examples of, many requests of this camera was to see zoom range and video quality. With the long zoom this camera has, the video clips tend to be a little more extensive than other cameras. I realize I cannot please everyone, but I do my best to make videos that are helpful to the majority. I do have specific requests on my to do list to use certain cameras again to demonstrate things like the scene modes, or a full run through the menu. If you want to see more, I am happy to add it to my list. As for sunsets, many cameras can accomplish beautiful sunsets of you control the metering rather than automatic. Maybe check out my metering video for assistance? I am also trying to find a platform where I can upload all sample images I take with each camera so the ones I cannot fit in the video can be viewed. Thinking of possibly doing JUST sample videos where it is slideshows of the sample footage and the settings used. Let me know your thoughts and what would be more helpful for you!

Over the P950, I was pleasantly surprised with the P1000's zoom quality being much better in my experience. Now this is nothing compared to a camera with a larger sensor that can achieve sharper images with less noise, but the point of this camera is the distance captured, not the quality it is captured at.

Theres still no other camera on the market that compares. Its a great camera imo, the quality isn't super high but then you get to see subjects with the P1000 optically that you wouldn't even know was there with other cameras. Camera shake and atmospheric distortion will be a challenge at the further most zoom level. Personally I have owned more expensive cameras than the P1000 but its still the most fun camera to take out to trails, you can reach out and touch anything :)
