Nikon P900 Update w 3000mm LENS & RAW!!!!

I would keep the present zoom if they could improve the sensor, also the p900 manual settings are very limited in regards to shutter speed, aperture etc...great for moon shots....not impressed with nightsky and stars in general.

If it was me designing the update... I would probably keep the zoom the same, and focus on improving the sensor as much as possible to squeeze as much dynamic range and quality out of a sensor that small as possible. I would not make the sensor bigger, because then you would loose that zoom... And I would not add more mega pixels, because with a sensor that small there is going to be trade offs... Just push that technology at that size to get the most out of it for quality and dynamic range... Then add in the option to capture raw... Then improve the image stabilization as much as possible... Then also add in the option for a corded reliable remote shutter.... And improve the focusing system. Basically polish and fine tune it as much as possible, and add in that 4k video for those that want it.

I just don't understand how 2000 mm focal lenth can be achieved from about 400 mm long lens. Can anyone explaine me please ? I saw before that Canon 1200 mm lens is exactly 1200 mm long.

I would possibly be interested in a new P900 type camera as a walkaround wildlife camera. It does need to be 4K plus VFR at 1080p for video, a good burst rate and fast AF plus RAW option for photos, and mic/headphone ports would be good too. I am looking at the Sony RX10 iv & it has some amazing features-of it course it zooms from 24-600mm, not 2000 or even 3000mm! But...it has a 1" sensor which appeals to me, and 4K & phase detection AF plus 24fps burst mode! The price is steep though but there is always a trade-off somewhere.

There's telescopes made with fL of 1500 mm and there are 2x and 3x Barlows available for them. Still - - those are quite unwieldy.

Image quality at the long end of the zoom would most likely suffer too much for me. Even with a great image stabilization, your shutter speed with have to be even higher plus if you wanted to freeze action at the long end of the zoom you'd have to have a shutter speed great than 1/3000. I can't imagine enough light hitting the sensor for that shutter speed, even in good lighting and horrible in bad lighting. That would require a bigger sensor thus heavier camera, and much costlier.

Hi, your reviews are very informative and concise; I know what to do/not to do when I listen to your takes on camera equipment. As for the P900, yes, the raw or the lack of was a deal breaker for me. I've always known that the raw version of the P900 was coming. The fact that it's adding an additional 1000m to its already insane 2000m lens is a huge plus for me; I'd like to do some cosmology photography--more of a hobby type thing and the p9__ would make the cut for me in that area. RAW for me is not such a big deal, I would prefer a cheaper camera than one that makes RAW. Like Canon most expensive zoom cameras make RAW, but in the end everybody sets for JPEG because the RAW format does not grant such a wide range of editing for that camera, occupies space and you can't use digital zoom, which people end up using all the time. I would prefer a cheaper camera that don't make RAW. If a person want's to shoot in the dark and recover the images from bad situations a DSLR far cheaper than that would make a far better job, because this "consumer" camera is quite expensive for the casual shooter in most countries, but has a very fair prince for its capability indeed.

Will it be under $1000 though? You can get 2000mm on your DSLR. Opteka 1300mm f/8 manual lens + 2x teleconverter for $160 together. Image quality kinda sucks and no AF. Honestly, on this Camera specifically, no one gives a crap about 4k because everyone is just buying it for the superzoom lens. It'll have 4k probably though but RAW is more important than 4k to me.

Quick comment: 600mm + 2x teleconverter on crop sensor DSLR...poof 1920mm equivalent. For the cost though, the p900 is great value. If it shot raw I would probably already have one in my kit. Killer birding camera for the budget minded. Some times travelling doesn't allow taking a DSLR kit, this camera checks a lot of boxes. I will be watching for the update.

RAW with very small sensor - Is it useful?

OSOCO : Well look at it this way. All cameras start with taking the raw data from the sensor. So all cameras 'shoot' raw, but some cameras convert the raw data to jpeg before writing to the card. The jpeg will be based on the manufacturer's algorithms. The P900 does do a very good job and I highly recommend the budget minded or carrying room limited individual. Although all of my photos end up as jpeg for viewing/sharing, I prefer to make my own tweaks to the raw data first. Also you can think of working with raw like baking a cake, if you don't like the result you get to go back tweak and re bake. When have a raw file you can go back years later to rework the file based on learning new techniques. With jpeg you are limited to the amount you can re tweak. Big sensor big cake, small sensor maybe a cupcake, but you can re bake as many time as you like. Some people just want to shoot and view with out processing so the camera jpegs are good enough for them. The P900 is a great camera but I would like the raw option. - cheers

I'll like it to have more range when shooting at different ISO, for example in ISO 200 yo can't go slower than 8 seconds while in 100 you get 15 seconds, that's starry night to just night difference. I am also waiting for the continuation of the p900 But I'm also pretty sick of the whole net full of lies and nonsense. Rumors thay call it! . I call it fantasy. The concept of 2000mm was amazing, however the camera is not perfect and Nikon has few things to improve even before increasing the range. The zoom engine sounds like something that is going to fall apart at any moment. like chip Toy . Focus capability in the long range gut to work on it . The sensor that processes an image and more. p.s i have the lx90 meade its 2500mm and you can work with dslr.

Nikon Coolpix P900 is a must have for anyone trying to debunk the globe and prove flat earth. Worked for me, I took a photo of from La Jolla to San Clemente, but at 40+ miles away that's just over 900ft of curvature that should have made it impossible. Can't wait for the 3000mm zoom!
