Here's a much easier way to figure a reasonable target distance if you're used to working in feet rather than meters, using 30x the focal length as a general guide. For a 50mm lens, that's 50mm x 30 = 1500mm which converts to 4.9 feet-call it 5 feet for our purposes. So just take the focal length of the lens, move the decimal point one to the left, and label it feet. For a 24mm lens, 2.4 ft. 105mm lens, 10.5 ft. Plenty close enough to get into the sweet spot of that 25x-50x range.

I have a D500 and the Sigma 70-200mm Sport. I already knew the lens was back focusing really bad, it needed somewhere between neg 15-20 to get sharp. Great Video but I fight for about an hour to get it to work. THIS IS WHAT I FOUND. I kept getting a message about "Focal Lenght" when I pressed the 2 buttons. I was using Steve's formal as to how far away I needed to be from the focusing print out. So I set up at about 25ft, nothing I did work. So I decided after total failure to bring everything closer together, so I set up at about 12ft and everything started working perfectly. After much testing at 70 and 200mm. I then moved back to 18ft and everything worked fine. So if you continue to get a message about "FOCUSING" please move closer to your target.

Thank you for this great instructional video. I followed the procedures closely to fine tune focus on my refurbished Nikon D500 with 50mm AF-S f/1.4G lens. While the focus looks really good when I zoom in on the playback image, when I compose and focus the viewfinder goes blurry. I have dialed back the diopter as far as it goes in the direction that is most helpful but it just isn't enough. Any thoughts on what else to try?

Can I use this auto af fine tune to actually put the calibration values for a sigma 500 f4 at different distances with the usb dock? So I am suggesting that say I need the value at 3,5 meters then I find it out with the auto af fine tune and then I input the result with the dock (of course in the end the body will have a fine tune value of 0 as the lens will have all the necessary info already). Thanks for the video in any case 🙂!

@richardcoward72344 жыл бұрын
Same here on a Nikkor 200-500 f5.6. I had re-run the video numerous times to make sure I was doing everything right but to no avail. Then I took note of the comment about having a very sturdy, rock-solid base and to 'very carefully' press the two buttons for the Automatic AF-Fine Tune process without moving the camera. Mine jumps around loads! I tried to do it several times but I cannot hold it still enough to get even one pass of the AF-FT test. I am now working on the assumption that it is this movement that may be causing the failure, which is backed up by other references too. At the 500mm end of the lens, even the slightest touch moves the camera which means I will have to come up with another, more rigid setup that reduces movement on those button presses. Anyone else have this problem? It's a shame this AF-Fine Tune can't be triggered remotely via a USB connection or something! I wonder how Nikon do their testing of this on the long end of their big lenses?

@@backcountrygallery Sorry I'm so late to the party but your video was extremely helpful and much appreciated. With this in mind I'm cautious about leaving AF Fine Tune switched on for the few lenses that I've not yet calibrated.

@@rigbyphoto It's possible (although I've never seen it happen) that a severe AFFT adjustment could prevent the lens from focusing at infinity. That's why they say it. Although, I do tend to agree with the "don't use it unless you need it" sentiment.

One of the reason I bought the Sigma 150-600 Sports over the Nikon 200-500 is because I can't put different calibration values at different focus length. At the time of my purchase, Tamron lenses also lacked the support, but they've added it now.

@Steve - Can you please clarify (or anybody else) for me, we have a Tamron 100 - 400mm and the main subject type we photograph are military (airborne) aircraft and them at UK airshows. However, as we can only tweak and set one focal length as you state in your video, what happens to all the remaining focal lengths within the lens for instance please... will they continue to work just as one would expect, if say a little soft not being a dear lens or prime etc - OR - If I set up Auto AF Fine Tune to be the best possible on the longish end (i.e. 350mm as we don't tend to get decent shots from maxed zoom focal length anyway) will this affect all other focal lengths throughout the 100-400? I'm confused. Other photographers on youtube told us, that "fine tuning"must be done using viewfinder and not live view screen. That is also my first question. My second problem is; I have good focus on 24mm end and bad on 70mm end of Nikon 24.70mm. How to solve that problem??
@peterallen71666 жыл бұрын
For your first question, use live view to make sure your target is centered. You can fine tune the focus if it is needed. In addressing the second question, you need to find a happy medium with zooms. I have a new Nikon 24-120 F4. AT 24mm, it sucks. At 70 and 120, it is great when I set the AF at +5. 24mm sucks no matter where I set the AF range. I had to compromise to be happy with the 70 and the 120, and get the best bad 24 mm I could.

At 07:23 you say "carefully focus on the target in live mode". Does this mean allow the autofocus system to acquire focus? How is this going to calibrate a new setting? Won't it just lock-in the errant focus setting? I'm confused.
@backcountrygallery3 жыл бұрын
Live View doesn't use the PDAF sensors and instead uses contrast detection (usually more accurate). So, if you have a lens that Beverly front / back focusing with viewfinder AF (PDAF) and then use live view to focus, you'll find the lens is accurate. What this system does it to look at where focus should be compared to where it thinks it should be and make the adjustment.

I tried doin this today and it was crazy. I did 3 different lenses, and with the camera locked down, in bright light with a good target, I was getting readings of +12, -17, +4, +10, -20, -10 just all over the place. I ended up doing it manually, the auto AF just was too erratic. Not sure what I was doing wrong.

Please help me. I have a 17-55 f2. 8 lens. If I use focal length 17, I'll come up with plus 4. If I use 55 then it comes on - 19 what should I do now? I photograph children and newborns

I'd double-check for sure. However, if you keep coming up with those numbers, I'd consider sending it back (if possible) or in for repair. If it's really that far out, you'll never be happy with it.

wonder if auto af tune is just as good as manual (or with reikan, before i got d500 i used reikan for years)... btw, i once saw that sometimes af becomes sligtly off in lower light *and* with af assist (eg d600/df), guess you may need to calibrate in lower light *with* af assist if you work a lot in ll (as i do, tango parties, i use external af assist on df just to help to its crappish af, flash with af assis is no-no for me)

Hi Steve, i got a problem, everytime my D500 with 500mm f/4G and a TC1.4 always produce a soft image, no mater how i test it, with or without VR turn on, mirror lock up, various shutter speed and light, image still soft, unless i dismount the TC and everything work fine again, and you know, i have try 2 different TC from my friends too. I am really headache right now...
