What do these results mean to you ? I for one Think the 24-200mm has really proved to be a great all in one lens. I think one thing every Z user could take away is that the Z 24-105 S is going to be a great lens being an S-line its going to be even better than the 24-200mm. Every Z lens seems to be sharper than its F mount counter part. As seen in comparison, 85mm f/1.8 S was so close to F mount legendary lenses like 105mm and 70-200mm E lenses and as more lenses and bodies on the way. It's good idea to have atleast a one native z prime with existing F mount lenses and slowly replacing F mount with equivalent Z lenses

Thanks Ricci for another good review - in video / live view mode AF acquisition focus seems faster on 24-200 than 24-120 and also cannot hear any lens focus / AF whirl noise from the newer lens. Wished Nikon could have updated the 24-120 to make it more video oriented when they brought out the D780 but still a good still lens and good price - especially 2nd hand, e.g., £400 - £500

Thanks for this comparison. My 24-120 is mediocre past 100mm. The Z 24-200mm looks appealing as a walk-around lens, particularly as it is fairly light in comparison to the F 24-120. As I use my AFP 70-300mm for longer reach, I'll wait to see what the Z 24-105mm looks like before committing to an alternative to the 24-70 f4 - its too bad Nikon didn't offer this sooner in the lineup.

Could you possibly do a close focus test to see how the 24-200 performs corner to corner, flat field, or perhaps provide some information to that question. This is also of importance to me for semi macro work, where I do a lot of close up work with abstract surfaces such as scratched paint, metal, and other flat surfaces where I want everything in focus. For example, I was disappointed in the 16-80 2.8, an excellent lens at normal focus distances, but the older 16-85 performed flat field beautifully. Many thanks for your informative videos.

First off, thank you so much for your free content on KZbin, you are an invaluable resource as a relatively new photographer with a z6 (and d750, d700). One thing in this video that confused me is the 24-120 is infamously not very sharp at 120 especially at wider apertures. I've verified this with the two copies I own. So to say they're the same at 120, does the 24-200 also fall off in performance around 120? I'm impressed by the z mount otherwise, as the f mount was noted for its high resolving power, often kitted with the d750 and even d850. Does sharpness fall off at 120 on the Z 24-200, maybe just in the corners?

Another great comparison. I have both lenses. I'still use the 24-120 on my D810 but even though I have the 24-70 2.8 Z mount for my Z8 I'm using the 24-200 more and more when I don't need the speed of the 24-70. Very impressed with this lens.

Great content as usual! I own a copy of the 24/120 and I am actually happy with its performance, for intended purposes. But I read lots of negative reviews of this lens which made me think I was not enough skilled to find its drawbacks. So I am actually positively surprised to see how it actually compares with the 24/200 Z.

Thanks for your comment as the lens owner. I'm thinking of getting a new 24-120 but have been hesitating due to many negative reviews. Sometimes, I am skeptical if some of the reviewers actually own the lens and have used it out in the field for some time before giving reviews. I rather read reviews, comments from the lens owners.

@@lamwp8634 thank you, glad if I can help. The lens is decently built, not too large or heavy compared to my 24-70. Renders very nice colors and it's super versatile. Yes there is some distortion at the extreme ends but nothing which can't be adjusted in post. I use it when I need a light bag. Alone or paired with the recent tamron 17 35 2.8 -4 which is also compact, light, affordable a d optically extremely good. If I need the best optical quality I have better options, but I got very nice shots with this one. I wouldn't buy it at the official price, but at current prices it's a very good opportunity IMHO.

It's something else to listen to the lenses focusing, I consider the 24-120mm a quiet lens, but the 24-200mm is freakishly quiet (like the other Z mount lenses). Don't get me going on how loud my 300mm Pentax lens is now that I had to convert to screw drive - holy moly! I like the 24-70mm f/4 but I always want more reach. Looks like the 24-200mm will find a home with me. (glad you stay awake through these tests with so little differences to noodle out :^) )

Thank you for sharing. Still with my D800 and a second hand F24-120 f4 i bought from a seller having this extra lens from his D750 as kit. I find this lens to meet my needs as I am into landscape/city/travel. It proved me right with your test as value for money. In real world, pixel peep is not the way to appreciate one's creation anyway.

I love the Nikon Z system! I have the 24-70 f2.8 and have preordered the 70-200. Cant wait to get it in my hands! Quick question: is there a reason why no camera company makes corner to corner super sharp prime lenes with fastest apperture F4 or F5.6? It would be really good for a landscape photographer that does alot of hiking. :)

@Ricci Talks Z mount lenses are making really good use of Bigger mount which was a limitation in case of F mount. These non-s and f/1.8 prime lenses compete so well even with Nano coated lenses. Imagine how good f/1.4s going to be!!

Hello Ricci. Thank you for the excellent reviews. I am hopeful you can answer a question. I have just come to the z6 and 24-200 from the d850 and 28-300. VR on the later was noticeable and with the Z6 and 24-200 I can’t sense if it is on even though I have it enabled in normal mode via the z6 menu. Is IBIS and lens VR completely silent? Great Video Ricci! Question on Z6 & Z7 Sensor in-body stabilization - do you turn it off for your landscape long exposures? Hey Chris So depends on the lens ur using Some of the new Z lenses know they are on a tripod so will enter a tripod mode without you even knowing So I don’t bother turning my VR off at all for landscapes

Interesting, the price for this Z 24-105 f4 lens is announced right now as us$1099, while the 24-70 f4 is at us$996, just $100 dollars difference! I think the biggest thing going for the 24-120 is it's constant aperture, despite it being a shorter focal range. Mine (when I had it) I never felt was all that sharp, and this comparison sort of supports that (I feel my 24-200 S lens is sharper) but I think as a travel lens, both can be good options, although I'm wondering if the Tamron 35-150 might be better than the 24-120 (but since Ricci only deals with OEM Nikon stuff, we probably won't see a comparison). But I ultimately sold my 24-120 after a few years and bought a 24-70 F-mount ED lens (non VR version) which was much better IMO (shorter on the long end obviously, so I had to pair it with a 70-200 and a 70-300 to fill in those gaps) but much better quality IMO than the 24-120, but the 24-120 isn't a bad lens especially if you can find one in good used condition for a few hundred dollars. It can also be a good lens for beginners so they can play around with things like focal length and aperture while learning the basics of photography. (NOTE: a little typo at 6:31... listed 24-70 f/2.8 not 24-120 f/4) At 9:36 I'd almost say the 24-200 is a tad sharper, but only in the lens in the back (look at the lettering 180 and 200 in both pictures. Now this could be related more to DOF than sharpness but I think the 24-200 still edges out the 24-120, althoug the 24-120 is very close. The other thing I noticed between the two is more focus breathing with the 24-120, and this was even quite noticeable when I had just my D750. I could tell it was focus breathing more. The 24-200 does a little, but not as much as the 24-120 so that might be important to some people, especially videographers (not to mention the AF motors in the Z lenses are near silent, whereas some F-mount AF motors are noisy and in some cases, not even useable for video for that reason).

I wanted to let you know that I did some research on the 24 120mm and the 24 200mm lenses. I think that the 24 120mm is a better option for me because it's a full frame lens and it's better in low light environments. I do a lot of events and wedding videography, so this is a big deal for me. The 24 200mm is better for outdoor environments because it has a wider aperture of F6.0. hope this helps, thank you.

Nikon with the lack of lenses and high prices and technology that it's not up to date is basically forcing my hand towards Canon. So many years with Nikon and used to the way they understand photographers to come to this. If Nikon does not have a single compelling product by April next year I am going to switch. If they can't compete they should at least compete on prices.

One of the main things that tempts me to Z6 is IBIS. Can you do a video demonstrating how good you think it is - for stills.

I've shot with the Z7 and Z50 converted to the 70-300E @300mm, and the 5 stop IBIS+VR versus 3 stop VR is VERY noticeable/awesome. I don't push those limits often enough to chase IBIS though. I think this is bad timing to buy a Z6. The price will drop when the replacement comes out, or you could catch a black Friday special.

I have the 24-120mm F4 on D750 body for a year and I sold the lens because it was just inferior compare to the Sony 24-105mm F4. I also have the Nikon 18-35mm which was way more sharper than this outdated lens. I waited many years for Nikon to update this lens(my favorite lens for hiking) but it never came. So now I switched to Sony A7M4 with 24-105 f4 as my main gear.

With a full frame camera, that is great choice for travel and most wedding; you will want a few primes for wedding too though, 35mm, and 50mm or 85mm, for shallow depth of field and low light situations.

I do not have access to a 28-200mm so can not test them. it doesn’t matter to me which one is better but I would back the z 24-200 being the best lens out of the two. Also worth noting the 28-200mm does not autofocus on the Z cameras as it relies on the camera AF motor in DSLRS that are not in the FTZ. I don’t think many would buy a manual focus lens over an autofocus lens when looking at a flexible all in one lens

The comparison images are shot I’m struggling with the 70-200mm f4 as it focus breaths backwards (closer you get focal length gets longer / further away u focus focal length gets shorter ) so it’s difficult to make 70mm match 70mm and 200mm to match 200mm

It’s a lot to expect much from a lens with such a wide zoom range and relatively compact dimensions. Looks like all one is giving up is a larger aperture. If one can carry a tripod to be able to shoot at f8 in low light you’re not giving up anything at all.

Now that Canon has released the R5 I can't help but compare it to the z7, which I just acquired one month ago. I confess to be very impressed with the build quality and layout of the controls. Perhaps I'm even thinking I might have held off and spent another $500 to get the R5 instead! The lens selection is also VERY impressive.

Thanks again for another great review Ricci. The 24-200 looks like a great addition to the Z line. However, I was disappointed a bit by the focus speed. While it the AF seems very sure and accurate the actual focus speed is, let's say, leisurely. The 24-120 hunts a bit more, and make a good bit of noise, but the actual AF (movement of elements) is MUCH zipper. Or am I seeing this all wrong?

Tony is like a lecturer rather than a professional photographer in my opinion. Tony talks inside his house most of the time with charts and technical data whereas pro photographers like Steve Perry, Matt Granger, Jared, Matt Erwin, spends most of the time shooting in the fields. They get paid for their photography output by the clients which say a lot of their recognition as pro photographers. Their comments are relevant from real world experience.

Remarkable difference in focus breathing and AF motor noise to the advantage of the Z lens. I disagree they look the same. The Z lens had more colour contrast. The F lens might be a bit brighter but the Z lens goes to 200mm and hence also replaces a 70-200f4 lens.

incorrect resume on this video. Edges on 24-120 are softer not because its an "old" lens. Z 24-200's rear element is bigger than one on 24-120 and located CLOSER to sensor, rays of light hit the sensor close to 90 degree, therefore there are better focus. Same apllies for ANY other lens, specifically designed for Z mount.

At my D850 there is no focus breathing of my 24-120 f/4, with the FTZ Adapter and my Z6 there is a little but less disturbing focus breathing.

@@mick1967 AF has nothing to do with focus breathing. Changing the focus point (movement of the lenses) can cause focus breathing. This happens with AF or MF.

the Nikon 24-12 F4.0 VR II is a top lens on a Nikon D4 or Nikon D3x camera. Nikon Z is a heartless mirrorless system. You can't compare F-Mount with Nikon Z. Z has nothing to do with classic photography. Have tried the Nikon Z three times and always come back to F-Mount. But that's just my opinion, good photographers will probably stay with F-Mount for a while

So disappointed in Nikon change of mounts. My argument for buying their product has always been that you can take a lens from the 1950’s and use it today. Canon has constantly changed it’s mounts. Now, Nikon is too. Even worse, they came out with all these bullshit 1.8 lenses only to come out with 1.2 later. Nikon has totally lost my confidence
