Software corrections are here to stay. And that’s a good thing. Distortion and vignetting are very easy to correct for in software. You sacrifice in some areas and gain in others while keeping size and weight down. This lens is significantly lighter than the F mount version while outperforming it optically. That’s thanks to digital corrections. Did you know what what your eyeball sees is corrected to an incredibly high degree by your brain “software”. The eyeball is only sharp in the very centre of projection.

Just watched the canon rf 24-70 review, and this lens seems to perform the same or better in every metric, especially flare and hard to correct aberrations. Considering that lens was considered excellent, why is this one considered overpriced?

I think fans of other brands just like to find something to whine about :-) Here in the UK the Nikon is cheaper than the Canon as is the case in the USA . The Sony lens is a bit cheaper than either though having previously owned it and now owning the Nikon , the Nikon lens is superior across the board. There are outlier markets such as Australia which due to location and small size of market can have quite substantial differences compared to other markets

I found this review a bit harsh on Nikon. Put into contest this lens blows away Sony 24-70 GM Canon 24-70rf in IQ with all auto correction on all three. A clear winner in build and quality feel too. Priced fair. all 24-70 F2.8 from CNS cost this much for the last 20yr if inflation corrected. Weight, size, filter size reasonable too.

@@jimstirling7223 I don't say that the competitors are better value (for now), but on dslr we have excellent 24-70 for less than half that price, and they probably still make profit. I think it's overpriced for that reason. There is some hype on the mirrorless cameras, and it's totally fine , but manufacturers are making huge profits on the early adopters. @alexnewton74844 жыл бұрын
I would argue that for some common uses of a fast 24-70 (weddings, outdoor portraits) the terrible LoCA and poor backlit performance of the Canon RF competitor would be bigger concerns than any shortcomings of this lens. It's a bit of a stretch to flatly call this lens overpriced while the Canon is merely labeled highly priced, especially when the Z6/7 have very capable IBIS. I wouldn't consider either lens overpriced if you have a need for it, nor would I label the IS-lacking EF equivalent overpriced.
@frankluo2304 жыл бұрын
The only saving grace is Canon also sells a 28-70F2. Their 24-70IS RF is nothing to write home about. I like Canon's lens roadmap a bit more than Nikon at least f1.8RF primes are targeting low end and f1.2RF primes also available. Both ends of the market are more important than the middle ground Nikon tries to fulfill first, a bunch of seemingly expensive f1.8 primes, although optically better than competition, and cheaper than f1.4 rivals, are still in noman's land.
@frankluo2304 жыл бұрын
Overpriced or not is an open argument for either brand however I am not alone as a non professional gear loving hobbyist, I prefer getting in the system cheap to test it out then buy the quality high end lens to keep for a long time. RP, 24-105STM, 35f1.8RF 85f2RF all responded well in market. Z5, 24-70f4, 35s 50s 85s 24s all optically better but not really cure GAS.
@Raevenswood3 жыл бұрын
The Canon costs 100$ more retail in the US than the Z but I see the Z 24-70 on sale quite a bit for just under 2000usd. So I am also confused by his gripe that this lens is "overpriced" especially based on the performance and pricing relative to the competition.

All high end mirrorless lenses are overpriced, full stop. Just because the Canon equivalent is expensive doesn’t mean this lens isn’t overpriced.
@jimstirling72234 жыл бұрын
All mirrorless lenses are using software corrections whether we like it or not , the lenses are explicitly designed to be used this way . I think the rationale is in exchange for allowing software to fix vignette and distortion the lens designers are in turn able to give optically sharper lenses . The main impact of these corrections would in theory be a touch more noise in the corners.But given the performance of modern sensors it is a bit moot

I came back to this review after owning this lens for a couple of years. While this lens is my favorite for general use and will continue to be for a while, I've got my fingers crossed for an updated version of this lens, preferably with an internal zoom mechanism like their 24-70mm lenses for DSLRs. My copy has gotten a bit of dust ingress over time (although that could be exacerbated by living in a dry, dusty climate), and I think an internal zoom with improved optics would remedy that problem, as well as justify the price and give it better value long term.

With regard to the distortion, I’d be more forgiving of the lens. If you need straight lines you probably want to correct any zoom lens in post, so there will always be some loss of resolution there. And if you’re not concerned with straight lines, this is probably acceptable performance. Also I have to wonder why the omission of inbuilt stabilization is an issue when the cameras you’d want to use this lens on have IBIS. Wrt vignetting I‘m not too fuzzed either though it could be better. But I would like better close-up performance. Still, if I would buy into the Z system, this lens would be on my list. With a Z6 I’d have a FF f/2.8 system weighing about 1.5 kg.

In the meantime I'm using my Z6 with the kit lens Z 24-70mm f/4S which is a good lens. I'm using my AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED with the FTZ adapter and it's working fine. Having this Z lens will cost me an arm, so for the time being I'm not buying new Z lenses. I have a FUJIFILM ecosystem too, so it's a huge amount of money to invest over time. Pricing is odd. I've seen it go for as low as €1570 from the grey market to the UK, though prices fluctuate wildly. I have the z6 with the 24-70 f4. All i can say is that you can pretty much ignore every reviereview before firmware 3.0 (well, reviews with the 2.0 firmware are still kinda valid). It is really great and is much better in terms of ease of use, evf and ergonomics, (and colors to my eye, but that is subjective) than the Sony. Also feels more robust. But I only had the Sony for ca. 1h to try it out...and the Sony has still a better autofocus. By much? I don't know. The argument with 2 sd cards vs 1 xqd/cfexpress card is kinda pointless to my eye, these newer cards are much more reliable than the old sd cards. Sony has a better autofocus and much better lens selection, and maybe better battery life (but I think that the nikon has a very good battery life). Nikon has better ergonomics, evf, LCD, menus etc. And better out of the box jpeg colors to my eve. I'd just try them out, you cant go wrong with either one with the firmware improvements

Thanks for another review. Hope you and your family are safe and healthy during this time. Also, many thanks to your wife for being a willing and very capable model. Whenever my husband asks to take my photo, I try and look as silly as possible so he stops asking. It hasn't worked.

Well, comparing the reviews of the f/4 and this f/2.8, it seems these lenses behave exactly the same in terms of sharpness....I'll pass this 2.8 though.

If Canon keeps adding mounts, they will run out of business before the end of the year! :-P Seriously: Nice looking lens and good performance. The price tag is almost worrying in the UK, here in Germany I just looked it up and a few big camera and electronics stores list it for 1950€, that's currently about 1750 GBP, rather than the 2000 you mentioned. Much more appropriate, in my opinion.

I find the price and service buying directly from Asia far superior to anywhere in Europe, though tax avoidance is obviously legally and ethnically questionable.

for Non-Pros using Z6 -- skip this $2000 lens ... & get the 24-70/4S (kit) + 50/1.8S .... both for 1200$ (600 each) Only, ... thus saving 800$ for a Tele/portrait prime (85/1.8) if needed, it is priced $799

@@ghas4151 Nope, ALL Canon RF Lenses and Sony E-Mount lenses come with bags, except the absolute low end lenses, which the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 S is clearly not.
@robertcudlipp34264 жыл бұрын
Simply seems that Canon, Nikon and Sony couldn't realistically be expecting to sell large numbers of the 24-70 2.8. If you can afford one, you will keep for life. Opens the door wide open for the excellent alternatives from revitalised Sigma and Tamron.
@PAD324 жыл бұрын
The part of the lens with the "24-70/2.8S" marking is absolutely hideous. It looks like you mounted a lens on a cheap adapter from aliexpress

@@PAD32 I do not care how a lens looks I care how it performs . It is a lens not a sculpture or work of art function over form is how it should be.

@@jimstirling7223 Wow you have a selfish conception of how things should be. Maybe all you care about is functionality, but that's not everyone's opinion. We could say the exact same thing about cars for example. But in fact, people like to have good looking stuff. I agree that it is secondary, but aestetic just add a little to the pleasure of using stuff.
