Thanks for the detailed review! I dumped the lens hood and added a 46-52mm adapter ring which I just leave on all the time. This lets me use my filters and I picked up an extra 52mm lens cap for protection. I did the same with my 16-50. I use both lenses for travel and reach for the 24 when the light gets low. Very happy with the performance of both.

I bought a used 16-50mm. It was in such poor shape that I returned it. I bought this 24mm f/1.7 instead. I’m so happy with this 24mm. It practically lives on my Z50. I now carry my camera everywhere. The 16-50mm is no 300mm, so you can zoom with your feet when using the 24mm to take mostly the same shots without much hassle.. Of course you don’t get the compression of a 50mm, BUT you benefit from the wide aperture for low light situations (dinners, indoor events, etc.). The 24mm on an APS-C camera is also perfect for indoors, as you often don’t have enough room to back up. Additionally, its performance, although not the best, exceeds what you’d expect considering the price and size of this lens. I have lenses that are worth three times as much and don’t perform as well. This little lens doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, to the point that I find it shocking, I'm serious.

Excellent review! I'm cross shopping the 40/2 full frame vs the 24/1.7 DX so watching your videos on these lenses back to back was very useful. The lack of IBIS on DX coupled with the mediocre sharpness of the 24 has me leaning towards the 40.
@jonneaveАй бұрын
Thanks for watching! That’s a tricky choice as they’re distinctly different focal lengths. Did you settle on a lens yet?

Thank you. I've owned all four lenses and recently traded in the 24-70 4.0 S for the 28-75 2.8. I have not tried the 24 on my FX. I appreciate your review and suggestion. I'll try it on the FX body. I also just got the Sigma 30 mm for my Z50. Have you compared the Z50 body with your ZFC? Do you have any thoughts about the Z50 II?
@jonneave27 күн бұрын
Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. I have had the Z50, ZFc and now the Z50 II. I’ll be selling the Z50 and ZFc. I got the ZFc as it had eye detect linked to smaller autofocus areas compared with the Z50 but the handling was much worse for my type of shooting than the Z50 so I had to add a grip. The Z50 II is better handling than the Z50 and has many of the autofocus features of the Z8 including many customizable buttons. I really really like it!

Any hints at an SE version that matches the retro esthetic of Zfc camera?
@jonneave4 күн бұрын
I’ve not caught wind of any rumors on an SE version of the 24mm f/1.7. It seems a lot of people would like a range of small lenses with a retro and perhaps proper aperture rings. It appears Nikon has differing thoughts…..Thanks for checking out the video!

Thanks for the detailed review and the comparison with the 28mm. I have the 28mm f/2.8 on my Z50 and was getting itchy lens buying fingers. This has cured me somewhat :)
@jonneave7 ай бұрын
Unless you really need the extra stop and a third of light, there’s little compelling reason to get the 24mm f1.7. Thanks for checking out the video!

To be honest, I am not a Pixel Peeper. And because of that fact I love the 24 1.7. It does what I want it to do and that's all that matters. I´d recommend it as long as you care for the picture and not for the pixels...

at 1:35 you are talking about "faster aperture". Shouldn't it be "wider aperture", or am I missing something?
@jonneaveАй бұрын
Hi. Fast and wide are used interchangeably. The term fast glass means a lens with a very wide maximum aperture. Thanks for checking out the video!

Hello sir, i have z6 ii, prime S lenses and z fc. I want a light kit z fc and 2 lenses to carry everyday with me. I have sigma 56 1.4 and I am torn between 24 1.7 and 28 2.8. I am afraid that would not be satisfied with the picture quality(sharpness, ghosting and flaring). Sigma 56 1.4 is on par in almost every situations with nikon S lenses. May you help me with advice, in my city there is no local store, so I everything i bought is based on charts and reviews...🙏🏻

Hey Plamen, many thanks for checking out the video. I’ve used the sigma 56m f1.4 on my micro four thirds bodies and I like it a lot. I think since you have the Z6 ii and the ZFc, the 28mm f2.8 may be the right choice, unless you’re looking to pair it with just the ZFc. What’s your intended use for a new lens?
