Great review again, If one has to choose between this 24mm and the Z Nikkor 20mm f1.8 S the latter is quite a bit bettter wide open. The difference between recommended and highly recommended.

I think this lens is underrated on the whole internet. I agree with the review, is not perfect on raw performance, but its rendering features, focus breathing and bokeh make this lens an incredible one for video. This lens used in crop mode to record 4K videos looks like an extraordinary performer, with little vignette and excellent transition to OOF areas. Because of this, im very tempted on getting one.

Hi Chris, thanks for this review! I’m very happy with my Nikon Z6. Recently I’ve attached a Canon FD 1.2/55mm lens on it via adapter. As far as I know you a vintage lens you would like. Solidly build, soft wide open with good sharpness but a veil. Stopped down to 1.8 and below contrast increases dramatically and it gets bitingly sharp - you won’t be disappointed. 55mm is a nice focal length. For 24 mm I use the Canon EF 1.4/24mm with the Fringer adapter. Best Ralf

@@bl00me18 Hm, for landscape you usually use smaller apertures such as f/8 - f/16. For portraits, you usually want to zoom in closer to the subject than 24mm. That's why I wonder what one would do with such a fast ultra wide angle lens. An f/4 version would do for landscape and for portrait more zoom would be better. I'm not saying that nobody ever would use this lens for landscape/portrait, but the typical applications in these areas are different, don't you think?

@@endtimeimages3284 there is not only one way to shoot landscape, wide open is also an option in many cases. And 24mm is a stunning focal length for portraits in my opinion. Of course you dont do headshots with it because of the distortion. But it can deliver amazing results. Maybe scroll through flickr or 500px to see for yourself. But sure, I can understand that is not for everyones style of photography.

Hi Christopher. I love your lens reviews. I particularly love the idea that you started reviewing older lenses that you originally tested on lower resolution cameras, like the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art. There's another lens I'd love for you to re-review, although I'm guessing there's little chance of that. It's a lens that you said was nearly as sharp and good as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. It's the Tamron 45mm f/1.8. Honestly, is there any chance that you might review it on a higher megapixel camera?

Great lens. Not very huge vignetting really. I think not much higher than many 24 1.4 lenses produce on 1.8. So even it not 1.4 lens, but apart from the lack of 1.4 it mostly produce comparable or even better perfomances. It is also worth remembering that there are not so many good 24 1.4 lenses right now.

Early comment before the title fix lol :) Great review as always, glad you are reviewing Nikon gear! Gotta say that I can't get excited about most of the Z mount primes - I love the zooms though, the 24-70 F4 is amazing to me for how good its image quality is considering its compact size. Should there be any difference in the sharpness results when using the DX mode in this Z7? The 20mp crop mode of the 45mp FX camera is simply the DX sized central area of the same sensor (20mp x 2.25 = 45mp), there is no different technology/electronics being used, no pixel binning or change in sampling going on. The very same size pixels are being used, just those in the central DX area. In fact, for all we know the Z7 may still just take the full-frame raw file and then trim the outer edges before saving as a raw DX file. The only difference is you would need to be 50% further away from your test chart as the field of view is now narrower. If anything, since the sensor hasn't changed, the DX shot should be sharper because you're using only the central portion of the projected FX image. This is different to comparing to a separate DX camera of course, becuase that would typically have a different generation of sensor, different micro-lenses etc etc, not to mention different pixel pitch typically. Why would the DX crop mode in camera be any different from standing 50% further away in FX mode, then cropping outside the DX boundary? Exact same number of exact same pixels.

Could someone explain why dx mode with same lens has worst quality picture?
@beavertown2006
@beavertown2006 3 жыл бұрын
I have the same question and want to know why too, perhaps if we crop the image with Photoshop the pictue quality will be exactly the same but when you use crop mode to take the same field of view picture, you need to move yourself away from the object in order to match the same field of view, since you are further away from the object compare to the FF mode which is closer to the object, your crop sensor is unlikely to see better than the FF sensor. May be I am totally wrong.

One reason could be pixel density or size ... a 20mp apsc have similar pixels size as 45mp FF ... in older reviews you'll find 24mp FF compared to 18mp apsc (which have smaller pixels so it is more challenging) ... in this video you'll notice the middle sharpness was same because it is of the same size

To be honest its pretty underwhelming comparing this with lens from 3rd party lens maker like samyang which perform better in term of image quality.

Comparing the results side by side with Samyang 20/1.8 (manual focus) on 40MP full frame on his channel and the the Nikon S is just a tad softer in the center but much sharper in the edges at 1.8, where the Samyang performs pretty bad wide open. However, the Samyang is half the price. So I guess you get what you pay for?

The Nikon is a higher quality than the GM as an all round lens. Particularly so for hybrid shooters. The Sony is not as well weather sealed (smaller gaskets) and breathes very heavily. For a lens that performs this well in stills and video for this size is incredible. Note also that the GM also has to be stopped down for sharpening up when shot wide open. I’ve owned the GM so I’m very familiar with it :)
