I still decided to buy a used f/1.4 that shallow depth of field for portraits is still more important to me then the sharpness. I hope they come out with a F/1.4 for the Z mount. I think the F/1.2 would just be too big and heavy. 1.4 is the best compromise.

Hello. please somebody put some light on this doubt i have: I've been noticing it along all the test, i also noticed it on my z lenses compared to fmount lenses. Why same focal lenght and apperture gives less blurred backgrounds/foregrounds? Compare 20:59 for the f-mount 1.8 vs 21:44 for the z-mount 1.8. Same parameters but less blur in general. I noticed this on my 24-70f4 as well as on my zmount 50 1.8. whats going on?
@GordoFriman2 жыл бұрын
I got to my own conclusion: focus breathing allows for the "focal lenght" to be increased when focusing closer, therefore out of focus circles look bigger. :)

So, if this is a general landscape lens, it'll presumably be stopped down and likely on a tripod. Why get a dedicated wider aperture lens like this and then just stop it down to get proper dof? Aside from your night shot at f1.8, this lens seems like a relatively expensive and redundant thing to the other lenses that already sufficiently cover the 24mm focal length. I'm asking because i have my 14-30/4. I am confident that i can get similar results to yours with my lens, plus the added versatility of zoom. I guess I'm just struggling with justifying a lot of these lenses for purchase :). I know they're better, but i find myself keeping most of my f mounts.
@RicciTalks5 жыл бұрын
Oh I agree ! Not everyone needs every lens! I love my 14-30mm I use that 99% of the time at 14mm, I do think that even stopped down the 24mm will perform better because it’s a prime. I was thinking of doing a landscape test between the 14-30 and 24mm. Sometimes 24mm just isn’t wide enough.

@@RicciTalks ah, thanks, buddy. I'm just trying to save-off GAS. Every lens you review, I'm like, "yup, gonna buy that one too." @@RicciTalks The 24mm really isnt wide enough, and so many other zooms go to 24mm and with decent quality. I have always felt that the 20mm lens is the best blend in a prime for landscape. Not so wide that distortion starts to become a problem, not too large and heavy, and considerably better angle than the 24mm. A lot people think that 4mm is not much, but they are wrong. That 4mm is quite a bit.

Ricci, not sure you see these comments from posts long gone by, but curious if you'd put this in your bag instead of the Z 14-30mm f4? I know in the 20mm 1.8 you wouldn't suggest that, curious about this comparison. After many months, my photo count shows I'm rarely shooting very wide and wondering if this would be a better option. I have the 50mm 1.8 and very happy and waiting on the MC 105mm. Thanks in advance.

Great video. I'm in the market for a Z6 so I can start putting out 4K content soon. I don't care much about the photography aspect of the Z6, full focus on video only. I personally want the Z 35mm S 1.8, but was told that the price wasn't worth it, and I'd be better off getting the 24-70 f/4 instead. I often do shoot in low light in my room which is why I want that lower f/. The 24mm 1.8 here is WAY out of my budget, that's a no go for sure. I WOULD like to have it tbh, because I use the 24mm pancake lens as a Canon shooter. Is the 35mm f/1.8 ($660 ~ $846) worth it? Should I pay that few extra hundred dollars over the 24-70 f/4 ($576 USD)?

Informative video. Excellent lens in terms of sharpness. But clearly in your sharpness test the out of focus areas (gold wirtings on the 500 F5.6 PF) were much nicer on both the F mount versions. The edges are much harder on the Z mount version, also there is someting "grainy" in there. So sharpness certainly comes at a cost if you want that bokeh effect wide open it's maybe not the best choice.

Hi Ricci, I know my question is not related to this lens but to both Z cameras. Since you own them I hoped that you may help with the following: is it possible to set up the in camera intervelometer in conjunction with auto exposure bracketing? E.g. I would like the camera to capture every 3 mins a set of brackets (e.g. -1/2/-1/0/1/2) and run like that for let’s say 30 mins which should result in 10 sets of brackets? I would much appreciate your reply I was trying to find answer to this but no one seems to have tried this yet.

I can't help thinking your comparison is biased because every SLine lens is outperforming the good old F mount counterpart massively. Suspiciously the 85s and this 24s because 85f1.8g and 24f1.8g were so good.
@RicciTalks5 жыл бұрын
I gain absolutely nothing out of being biased. If the F-mount is better I will tell you. Yes it can be hard to accept that the Z lenses are better. But they just are because of their new design and also a lot of the F-mount lenses are just older designs the f-mount 85mm f1.4 was released in 2010 nearly ten years ago. So you would hope any new lens would improve over 10 years ! I did compare the Z-mount 85mm to the f-mount 105mm and 70-200mm they are pretty much identical I suggest you go watch that.
@EricTobiasPhotography5 жыл бұрын
the Z lenses have a lens profile already baked into them when opened in LR which adds sharpness to the slider automatically. These lens comparisons are completely false unless all the sliders are zeroed out in LR before comparing. There is no mention this before you started the comparison.

You are in a perfect position to provide some answers. I am sure you know of Tony Northrup? If you don't he's easy to find on KZbin, just search for him. Why would you want to do this? Have a look at his "Nikon Z50 is a huge mistake" video [kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYSpomSVftKdsLM]. Where he makes various claims, without even seeing or handling a Z50. He claims, for instance, that putting a Z FX lens on a Z50 will produce 'blurry' photo's(?). As you have a Z50 and plenty of Z Full frame lenses, you can either prove him right or more likely prove him wrong.
@RicciTalks5 жыл бұрын
I have not watched the video however I have no idea how anyone could think that using a full frame lens producing a larger image circle than the sensor used in the Z50 would produce a blurry or softer image the Z50 would be using the centre of the lens the sharpest part of the lens. That’s exactly how it works with F-mount Fx lenses on DX bodies
