It's a good teaser. They're definitely teasing the Z9's AF performance. I think the car AF is interesting because if you watch the car turn, the AF point MOVES to the other headlight because of the different angle of the car. I shoot a good amount of motorsports and that's really interesting to see. Looks like a phenomenal camera. It's a teaser so I'm sure they're just teasing SOME of the glorious specs and techs of the Z9. I'm excited for it.

For me I think the football scene is pretty interesting. Traditionally most Eye and Face AF (across all brands, not just Nikon) have issues detecting people with darker skin. But in this scene we can see the Z9 absolutely nails it. I do hope some of these new AF features get trickled down to Z6 II and Z7 II via firmware updates!

Hi Ricci - I saw something else about tracking. I think they are demonstrating the ability to choose your target and track a specific target with a number of different modes - maybe any AF mode. With the car it seemed to use Wide Large then switch to wide small for the nearer headlight because the box changed size. With the motorcycle it maintained a single AF box for the entire segment. With the long jumper it maintained a small single point or Eye AF only the entire time as the subject was moving directly at the camera - similar to 3D. With the hurdlers it was notable that it picked the eye of a specific runner - not another runner near the plane of focus but closer to the camera. What's more - there was no time required to move to the correct runner or eye so I suspect the focus target was planned and then the camera was able to maintain that target through the series. This ability to use tracking with any mode, to engage it on the fly, and possibly the ability to switch targets or AF modes with the car are all new as far as I know.

Ricci, the point in this IS to show us, that the camera CAN track differently, the subjects look to be in the "case" order, like cannon AF system, aka L\R-stable; F\B-stable; angular to camera axis-erratic motion; etc. showing us these cases are tracked correctly, AND importantly, NOT a "closer subject ALWAYS wins" scinario, as is with most AF systems!!(eg: the Z6/Z7 of old) The IQ of this AF system is evolving!!!

Couple of thoughts on this watching your pauses and break down: Dirt bike: the shape of the focus box is rectangle vertical. I only have a Z6 but I don't think any of the other cameras in the Z line have this? Soccer player: No focus box on anything until the player is in screen. Either a cropping issue (in video production) or it remembered the subject even off screen and jumped to him when he came back on. Jumper: Starts shooting while the jumper jumps, zero black out or apparent lag at high frame rate shooting.

What I like is that they've finally got rid of that triangle that blocks a huge part of the face (it shows that you can choose the other eye but it makes "reading" emotions on the face of the model tricky). It's nice to have the ability to choose the correct eyes to focus for some specific shots IMO, but it's like a second eye AF mode, it should not be the first one, and for sure it should not be the only one. PS I see no lag whatsoever, that is nice.

I'm just curious why in Trailer 1 it seemed like the eye AF switched to a 'blue/grey' color but in this one it did not? It's going to be interesting what this brings out.

@@torngrasp I think that may be it, that this is a ‘tracking’ feature versus an ‘eye af’ thing.

Ricci I'm really looking forward to the 28th when it's released. Then we'll know what it can and can't do. These teasers it's kind of like watching a highlight reel in sports all UPS no Downs. It does look good though.

Hi Ricci, thanks for the info. As always: to the point. It us a shame tha t we gave tk wait 42 teasers extra before we know what the z9 is all about. I donit understand Nikon. They have a loss of w79 million dollars this year, in Holland you have to wait 8 -12 months for the bodies and lenses!!! (All the z-lenses) What kind of marketing goeroe are they consulting? I love Nikon, but i am getting frustrated. They a re also unclear about the lenses to come. Do you know if there is a z70-200 f4 in the pipeline for 2022?

Hi Ricci, what about Z6ii AF face and eye detection ? The new firmware doesn't address at all AF ! new alpha 7 m4 is coming now with a powerful AF. Have Nikon engineers reached their limits with AF and face/eye detection with two expeeds ? my iphone 12 pro max better detects faces than z6ii. Are we going to live all the time with tricks like tracking subject button, red wide area box to help AF ? Aren't Nikon engineers able to detect a pink face from a green bush or tree ? what can we expect in next months, other than Z9 (and a new Z8) ?

Does Nikon have a history of also releasing new autofocus features onto lower tier cameras? Hoping these will come to z7…

If it indeed was 20fps, that‘s a bit strange. There was shutter sound, not entirely silent shooting, but I don‘t know of any camera until now that can do > 15fps in mechanical shutter mode? Or is it fully electronic shutter with fake shutter sound?

Very interesting stuff indeed, but when the guy jumps to the sand box and clearly his head goes out of the frame, it would have been cool to see when his head comes back into frame, how well the camera pick his eye again. I agree with Ricci, this third teaser could have been better worked out in showing more tracking detail. The second teaser when they show 8K footage for 1 hour and 20 minutes, it felt they just shut up all the Nikon hatters. Here, with the tracking, they could have done a better work in shutting them up. It shows very good tracking, don't get me wrong, but the key is... when the tracking is lost, how well it requires it again ;)

Its a good teaser. Will there be a fourth, or will it be the announcement on the 28th, as is rumored. Hmm. Not sure what they would tease with the fourth. Thank Ricci, hopefully you'll get your hands on one soon, then you'll be smiling like a Cheshire cat! 6 minute vid of you smiling. ;-)😀😁😂

Hi Ricci I don't own a Z Camera nor a FTZ. When i look at the FTZ Adapter in this Vid (1:00) it doesn't look like the other pictures of the FTZ Adapters i see in the net. Could that be a new FTZ Adapter? The bevel at the front seems to be much smaller then in other pictures. What do you think? Maybe it only looks like it's smaller because of the big Z9 and big lens...

My disappointment is that this doesn't look like a video of the back panel of the camera. Is this just a simulation on how it's supposed to work? Is this what the internal processor is doing even if the back panel is a little bit slower or doesn't have the resolution to show the same coverage? Or is this just the back panel with the info off or a HDMI feed going to an external recorder? Lots of questions, but I don't think it's showing more than "The camera will have eye, and vehicle tracking. Plus a new FTZ adapter."

The clip showing the three runners switched to slow motion in between and we could still see the af tracking square. Clearly this must be processed in post from a ninja 5 feed I guess.

Well, they don't call it a teaser for no reason - they won't let us know all the details about the autofocus yet :). As for the bird autofocus, we kinda got a preview of that in the previous video, right? Even though it was not focused on autofocus (pun intended). To me, it's interesting how smooth those AF boxes move, it looks like the camera is quick to react to a change in the focusing distance. Looks like an absolute monster of a camera, can't wait to see how it works!

The scene with the soccer players was most interesting since this situation had low contrast for the eye identification which is definitely what the Z6 is struggling with (tested on a black cat, while it worked fine on a light colored dog). Sadly there were no examples with animals for the Z9, this must be intentional since they could have just continued with the African setting. We will have to see how the identification and tracking of fast animals works. And we will have to see how this trickles down to the affordable camera series.

I counted 44 'audio' clicks/frames during that clip (I downloaded it and played it in slow motion to hear the audio in a slow speed). I could not figure out the exact length of the video clip in time (not frames).

The dealbreaker for wildlife photographers is how well the Z9 tracks birds in flight. Hopefully, its animal AF will extend well beyond dogs & cats! AF performance is a make or break for this camera and Nikon in general.

It's very exciting for Nikon to finally have a great pro mirrorless that can now keep up with moving things and be competitive against Sony and Canon, but will it be made in Japan or off shored to Thailand /Taiwan ?. The Z 9 will be way out of reach for most people due to price no doubt will be D6 money + . So most Nikon F mount DSLR people who are not convinced won't care because they won't be able to justify the high costs in switching over .Their OVF and F mount pro glass for the D850's D780, D4 -s , D5 is still top notch for taking photos there is no need to switch . It isn't suddenly no good any more like some Nikon narratives are suggesting and is just as good as mirrorless for taking photos and some might say better . But hopefully this new Nikon tech trickles down to a new much needed and better Gen 3 version Z6-Z7, a proper mirrorless consumer /pro body/ proper grips and two cards that will finally bring it up to Canon and Sony standards that have been available already for the last couple of years. Z6III and Z7III will probably get a lot of F mount people who were sitting on fence finally off the F mount or have a second Nikon system to go with Fmount OVF tech and stop the many Nikon people defecting jumping ship to Canon and Sony due to being behind in the mirrorless space and would make sense to see this second quarter 2022, with improved focus modules, processors as firm ware 2.0 is not happening and was never confirmed for Z6II Z7II and a needed more usable better three way touch screen that's is portrait orientated or fully articulating like the R5 R6 can do ect and the need for a more suitable /usable FTZ adapter for all of the other Nikon Glass that was unbelievably just forgotten about on the first and second gen Z systems. Well done Nikon hopefully you can get back on track .
