Nikon Z User Presets

Finally someone that talks about the Ux settings! I used the Ux-settings on my D7x00 cameras but find them not very useful on the Z-cameras for one reason: On the D7x00 cameras, temporary changes I did, remained when the camera was turned off and was not reset to saved settings until I switched the dial. On the Z-cameras all temporary changes I do, are reset to saved values when I turn the camera off. I often do a lot of mingling photos so I had one setting on U1 for that, but in different locations I often do some small changes. Mingling around often takes some hours and I often shut the camera off, to save battery but also because the buttons on my Z6 are so sensitive that it fires up as soon some button is touched. So when turned off, all my temporary settings for that evening are lost. One more thing: the first thing you have to do when save a setting, is to decide what mode you want to save; P, S, A och M. Once saved in Ux you cannot change that without start all over again by selecting PSAM, dial in everything you want and then save to Ux. If you change something in the i-menu and save this in U1, it will not be changed in U2 och U3 (or PSAM-mode). This could be useful in some instances but could also screw everything up. There are more than 250 settings you can do in each of these four modes (U1, U2, U3 and PSAM) so if you want to fully program your camera, you have about 1000 settings to do. Then I haven't been in to the video mode! I have stopped use the Ux setting and are now only using (P), S, A or M.

one tip, the EXPOSURE DELAY MODE is a work-around if you need two drive modes in action simultaneously, ie : you CAN'T have continuous shooting or mirror-up mode AND self-timer activated together, THIS way, ED mode allows this, but instead of a delay on the whole shutter cycle, eg 5,10 or 20 seconds, this delay is positioned MID cycle; ie when the mirror is raised, this delay allows time for the mirror to bounce off it's stops and come to rest minimising any vibration before the shutter opens.

I have my bracketing set up on my Fn2 button. So at anytime, I hit that button for bracketing. The Z5 is so great with dynamic range , I only do a two stop bracket. One normal and one 2 stops under.

Thanks for again another great video. I do have a question and hopefully you have time to answer this. You mentioned to set the vibration reduction off when working on a tripod, but why? I can imagine it doesn't contribute a lot anymore but why just don't leave it on all the time? Is there any disadvantage when left on? Battery consumption perhaps??

VC is designed to reduce camera shake - it is active. When there is no shake it can artificially introduce it. So on a tripod it is best to keep it off.

After you set a U button, must you return all settings as they were or do they return to your normal settings after you save the U setting?

They are saved to the u1 or u2? Whichever you use? You can change them as you go. But the settings you saved originally are still in there 🙏

Although I like the concept of storing specific settings as U1, U2 or U3 I find the way it is implemented to be incomplete. E.g. together with the bracketing function I wanted to store the release mode to H (especially useful for handheld bracketing), but unfortunately this is not recorded. My ideal user settings concept would allow to store really ALL settings and have the ability to copy the settings back to the working environment. That way one could start the day with ALL the preferred settings for the specific situation like e.g. „generic“, „landscape“, „macro“ or whetever you shoot often.

When I save my settings in user settings U1, U2 or U3, saves everything except the settings for the release mode, for example "Continuos L" or "Continuos H" is not saved. It stays as "Single Frame (S)". It is that nornal or my camera has a defect ?

Can someone explain why I can’t get continuous shutter mode to save in U1 when doing auto bracketing? As it is I have to select continuous shutter mode after selecting U1 for auto bracketing . Am I missing something?

Not every feature can be saved in the U settings. Some simply just don't stick on certain cameras. So likely nothing, it just may not be an option that will stay set.

Good vidéo ! I find this feature a bit disappointed. I do believe Nikon should have implement a function to see all Ux settings (through SnapBridge to make it more user friendly). After a while, you don’t remember all settings you’ve saved, meaning you restart from scratch.
