Correction - the joystick can not be set to zoom but the video button is a great alternative - thank you to Jim Mac for the catch on that and the great suggestion.
@JoshHarrisPhotography4 жыл бұрын
The joystick can't, but the Center-OK button can. I have my Z7 set for the joystick to return the focus point to Center, and the Center-OK to zoom in to 100% (same as during playback). Note that this setting doesn't work when in Auto Area AF; hitting the Center-OK button toggles dynamic area vs. subject tracking.

one other quick way to 'scroll' through images, is to use the touch screen, just like an I-pad, this works by touching and doing a two or three finger sweep to the left or right; also a quick zoom is to two finger pinch or release, this zooms the image ( find these under touch gesture controls in the menu).

I clicked the title thinking "I am wasting another 10 minutes to listen to things I already know", but I did not know the first two tricks, thanks! In fact it is a big pity that the camera doesn't zoom automatically when I turn the zoom ring in manual focusing mode, it does in Fuji systems and makes manual focusing very convenient. And the second trick was a real time saver I did not know!

FOR ME: If you swap the metering and AF function assignments (opposite as shown in the video) the front ring is much easier to rotate with your pointer. Holding the camera with your stronger middle finger seems to work better. Especially if you use a Z50 and Z5 as I do. I had your recommendation setup in my D500 which was fine and preferred. Nikon really needs to open up the options you can program buttons to! It is just software. With mirrorless I don't need to image review, but I playback more often, and the button on top left is not accessible while viewing the EVF AND supporting a heavier lens. I'd really like to get my Z5 and Z50 buttons to match more closely. Every Z lens should have one function button on it, and the S models should have two!

Yes - I definitely agree about those lens buttons! Thanks for the comments.

Hey there. First off thanks for doing this video. So I bought my 2nd Z6 and this one was 2nd hand which I didn’t have problems with the first used z6 but for some reason this one won’t turn green when I back button AF. This hadn’t been returned to factory settings so I’m hoping it’s a menu option. I have (unfounded) fear that this is some other camera in a z6 body. Thank you.
@daviddrake84333 жыл бұрын
I watch countless people advising how to set various menu functions on Nikon cameras by holding the particular button down while at the same time they move the command dial. To my understanding Nikon digital cameras have always had a setting where you could press the button, release it and then move the command dial. So much easier than what everyone claims, doing two things at once. On my D850 the switch is in menu F6. Try it once and you will never go back.
@BGTuyau Жыл бұрын
With these "command dial" re-programmings, does that not disable their basic functions of aperture and shutter-speed control?
@ShutterSpeak Жыл бұрын
No - it does not.
@BGTuyau Жыл бұрын
@@ShutterSpeak OK, thanks. Good to know. I'll check it all out at some point. The infinitude of control possibilities with the Z cameras is overwhelming -and the actual menus … are at best underwhelming.

Joe - thanks for the very helpful video. Actually I'm using the Fn2 button on my non-Z lenses for zooming and it works fine. I have an unrelated question that hopefully you can point me in the right direction. Every time I turn the camera off I get the following message: "Wireless transmission will continue. To suspend transmission, select "Off" for "Send while off." I have no idea what this is trying to tell me. In english what does this mean and is it useful. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Joseph,,, I very much enjoy watching Your videos..... I am wondering if while using the FTZ (on a Z6) and taking advantage of the metering and auto focus with my sharp F mount lenses if it is worth doing that... (I have never used any mounting devices to put any lenses from another manufacturer on my Nikon DSLR) I like my photos to be as sharp as possible.... Would I (in your opinion) be able to get sharp photos using the FTZ adaption or would I be disappointed ????
@ShutterSpeak4 жыл бұрын
Hi - thank you for the comment. I think that with the FTZ adapter you will be very happy with your F lenses. That being said the Z series lenses are fantastic. If you were to buy a new lens in the future I'm sure you would want the Z lens.
@marcobigio4 жыл бұрын
there are no optics in the FTZ, it only adds distance between the sensor and the rear element of the lens. According to Nikon engineers, there should be zero differences between shooting on an f-mount camera vs an equivalent z series with an FTZ
@fpeachm4 жыл бұрын
@@marcobigio I have a NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 500MM F/5.6E PF ED VR lens (F-mount) on my Z7. Works fine for me but according to Steve Perry on backcountrygallery.com, the Z7 cannot drive the lens autofocus functions as fast as Nikon DSLR cameras can. So (according to him), you would do better with this lens on a D850 for example. I don''t have a suitable Nikon DSLR to use to make a comparison so I have no personal experience on the subject.

Make sure you purchase the newer one, FTZ ll. A much better design.

GREATEST TIP I HAVE FOUND: use the "release button to use dial" set to ON ; for people with limited dexterity, arthritis, etc. this allows you to release the button, then turning the dials, in effect turning these selections into a "toggle switch" rather than a "momentary on" switch, heaps easier to manage.

If you are using a Z9, do NOT format the memory card; some settings are set on the memory card. Instead, use "Delete all pictures". That way the settings info will remain.
@ShutterSpeak Жыл бұрын
That's not really accurate - settings only remain on the card if you specifically save them to the card. Most pro sports shooters would never do that as they are constantly swapping out cards to runners for quick uploads as important events in the game take place. It's not to say you can't save setting, you can, but depending on what you shoot, you may specifically not.
@lindaitken3321 Жыл бұрын
