I would go with the ZV-E10 due to the overheating in 4k on the Z30... That is a deal breaker for me and my purposes, but it depends on your needs. I record for longer than 30min often when creating my videos and I can't have a camera overheating.... I hope that helps, Jay

@@Jason_Hermann thanks Jason - yes seems the obvious choice - Ive always avoided Sony cameras because the rear screen wasn't as accurate as my Nikons - I usually just eyeball what Im filming and I found the auto wb and auto iso always worked well when shooting manual. I noticed not a lot of Sony shooters report that this is how they shoot, so naturally felt maybe there was a reason for this, so have always been reticent to chance on Sony, but ill bite the bullet.

If you cannot afford a Z6II, Z30 is a good alternative... But maybe if you get a better job next year, you could finally switch to a full frame??

I hear that and agree for the most part, but the Z30 is not the best for long form recording as it overheats in 4k after a bit.... Food for thought if you plan to use it for that purpose... Photography wise and shorter videos I think it is an outstanding option for the money 👍

How do you make this make no so shaky? I did all the stabilization and it still is very shaky. Do you have to have a gimble so it looks smooth? I don't see creators all using gimbles and their footage looks a lot better than mine. My iPhone footage looks a lot better than what I'm getting on this camera if I move it all at.

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the reply. I. have a gimble for my phone so I understand how it works. When I use my iPhone 13 to shoot b-roll, it's pretty smooth without the gimble. I have both stabilizations turned on the Z30. When I shoot b-roll on the Z30 the exact same way I'm doing on my iPhone 13 (no gimble) should it look about the same smoothness? I'm trying to figure out if I have some setting turned on wrong because the footage looks terrible when I move the Z30 and film. The only time I can get good footage is when the camera is still. I don't understand how all these review videos on this camera have smooth footage with people are walking with it unless everyone has put the Z30 on a gimble when they are in selfie mode.

Yeah, because the sensor on the Z30 is so large compared to the phone it is susceptible to way more camera shake. The digital stabilization on the camera is very good, but not as effective as a cell phone again, due to the sensor size mostly. The lens stab is also good, but when walking you really need a gimbal to get smooth footage with a "real" camera... You can apply stabilization after the fact to your video footage, but it often does not work very well, so again the gimbal is the best solution for this type of thing. I hope that helps, Jay

Once I conquer getting my settings correct and have the video footage looking good, I'll purchase the gimble from your link and learn how to use it. Filming on a real camera has been a huge pain point for me thus far and I think I have the equipment I need now to get better talking head A-Roll outside.

Hi.. great tutorial again. I'm hesitant yet to get one z30 because the lack of a EVF that is always handy for stills (but can't afford a Z50).... what would you advice to overcome this? is the screen just enough?..

Not really much you can do other than save for the Z50 or deal with the screen. The screen works great overall I would say and you can adjust the brightness for when outside, but it is harder to use when tracking subjects in bright conditions. I would say you will be able to deal with it for regular photography and video if you jack up the screen brightness. Sometimes it might be hard to see, but you can shade the screen with your hand if you have to for example... Another option would be to look for a used Z50 maybe?

Have you noticed how it likes to pick one thirtieth of a second for video rather than a slightly higher ISO? Did it on your video here. They need to fix this. If you take the camera to a brighter environment and come back to where it was previously picking one thirtieth it suddenly starts picking one fiftieth. Bizarre.

That is the Auto Slow shutter feature. You can change that by using a more powerful mode and selecting the Shutter speed yourself.

The Z30's image quality is excellent, but it does not have a viewfinder making it not the greatest option for outdoor photos, especially wildlife... I would consider the Nikon Z50 instead, because it's basically the same camera, except it has a nice viewfinder as well. See here: geni.us/CCX84p

I've had my Nikon D5200 since 2015 now... it's a little outdated now and I don't think it fully works anymore... yesterday I couldn't get the auto focus to work when pressing the shoot button :/ .... I think this is a good candidate for replacement.

Very nice video! Now I'm inspired to give that 600+ manual a look. This is my first new camera since the Canon 70D. And! My first new Nikon since the FTN Apollo back in 1972. Needless to say there's a bit of a learning curve ahead of me for a while with the hobby of my life. You may want to include somewhere in there a little snippet about the noise the 50-250 lens makes and how it's normal (kind of like that continuous variable transmission in cars).

They are both great options and I would go with the Nikon Z30, specifically because you have way more lens options for the Z Mount. Image Quality and autofocus is very similar all around I would say...

Thanks for posting the video, its very helpful. Just curious, when you are charging the battery through the USB to your laptop, how long does it take to fully charge the battery? also the battery lamp indicator light is supposed to go out when the battery is fully charged, does your indicator light go out? I have literally just purchased the Z30 and i have charged the battery for about 5 hours through USB to my PC and the orange indicator light is still on, so i am not sure if the battery is fully charged, likewise i am currently charging a new uncharged battery using a wall socket and an extension plug for USB cable and the battery has been charging for 4 hours now and the orange light is still on, so i am really confused why my indicator light is not turning off after so long charging. Surely it does not take over 5 hours to fully charge this camera?

I'm sorry it's possible I said that in error. I really thought the light went out on mine when I had the camera, but based on yours and other comments I think the light might just be saying it's plugged in. If you turn the camera on it should tell you the battery life on the top of the screen. I'm sure yours is at 100% as it only takes about 1.5 hours total depending on the charger power of course... I don't have the camera anymore to test for you unfortunately.. I just checked the manual again and it does not specify and only says the light is on when charging... onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z30/en/03-02.html

I also thought that the orange light was just an indicator that the camera is plugged in, but after reading the manual it states that the orange light should go off after fully charging the battery, so i am not sure what is going on. Jason just curious if you can remember what AF settings you were using for best results when recording a product with no people in shot? In your video you say that you have the Auto-Area AF and keep the AF-F (Full-Time AF) on. However i am having issues with the AF focusing on anything within say ... 5 or 6 inches from the camera and its pretty blurry and out of focus. I have played around with the AF settings and even in manual AF i cant seem to get the camera to focus. I am hoping that this is just something that i am doing incorrectly and i can fix this in the AF settings. Anyway thank you again for taking the time to make this video, its very useful and helpful. Please Help!! Great Video but I have a weird question. My Z30 came only with a usb to usbc cable to charge the battery. The directions say to use my computer to charge the battery. However, I have a Macbook pro M1 with no ubs ports. Yes, I have usbc ports but the instruction say also to not let the computer hibernate because it will stop the charge. So I am supposed to keep my MAC awake for 7+ hours to charge this camera battery??? Why can't I just use a charger for my iphone to charge the battery? I am doing just this since in my research I could find no info about this issue. I hope I don't ruin the battery:(

Great video. Your perspective is coming from a film shooter. I really appreciate your approach. I wish a digital camera from Nikon was released w/o all the bells and whistles. My main camera was a Pentax 6x7 medium format camera and a hand held meter. To take a great photo doesn't require a high tech camera. And no built-in flash. The only thing is it looks like you are using it with the screen closed but I can't figure out how to use it that way. I have to open it to see the screen. Also, does it have a flash? I appreciate how thorough, clear and detailed your video is. You deserve far more subs!

There is no viewfinder on this camera. You have to use the screen.

Aloha Jason seems having problems downloading video larger then 4 gbs into iPad Pro is there any other way to do it , some of my videos are like 9 minutes or so converted into gbs I don’t know but it’s not allowing me to downloading , meaning I have to edit but loosing a lot of video when I do it

This tutorial was excellent, thank you so much! I was hoping you'd include how to sync with your smartphone. I downloaded Snapbridge but it seems like I need to change Wi-Fi to Nikon connection each time. Is there a more efficient way to do this? Ideally it would auto-sync onto my phone (Android, Google Pixel 6 Pro). I need to go back and watch the non-auto again once I'm ready to digest (program, manual, user setting)
