I was underwhelmed until I compared it to my last APS-C Nikon D90 (12mp with 4.5fps and no stabilization & terrible buffer). I loved that camera and used it for years, taking some of my fav photos with it. This little Z50 ii might be a great starting point for someone like past me, who just wanted a functional Nikon body so they spend more money on nice ff lenses, which would work in later years with an upgraded body. Personally, I'd love a higher megapixel APS-C which has good wildlife AF, so I can use my 100-400mm (150-600mm), while still being able to crop a fair bit, rather than having to buy a mega-lens like you have.
@williambuford61362 ай бұрын

I like my Z50 a lot and appreciate the new additions so I ordered a Z50ii immediately. It's an awesome small camera for travel. 20 megapixels is plenty. The lenses have stabilization (I've settled on just the 18-140). They kept the camera small and inexpensive. My battery typically lasts almost an entire day out riding around on a bike with the camera on a backpack shoulder strap and taking dozens of shots throughout the day. I don't understand all the complaining. Some people are never happy I guess. I only need basic video, so maybe that's a factor. I like that the controls have moved around to better match my Z8 larger camera, too. I'm REALLY happy with this new version :-) My only complaint (on both cameras) is no GPS. Snapbridge works pretty well for me, but it's still a tiny nuisance.

About that mode dial thing, I am with you, its common placement is not great. In fact... I would go one step further and suggest a dial is not the right interface period. The thing about the front and rear command dials is they stick out, thus allowing your fingers and thumbs to glide effortlessly and control the feature. All top dials are awkward to access, often requiring the tog to pull the camera away from the eye to switch modes. Even if you reach by feel you end up turning the dial the wrong way to access the mode you want... I really think I'd prefer a big fat button up top instead. Imagine a button that you can now designate which modes it cycles through. Instead of all those extra modes you simply do not care about, you could have PASM+C1-4 or however many you want. Just want C1-C7? Fine, just untick Auto, VLOG, PASM, Filters etc, done. Maybe you press the big fat button and use the rear command dial to rotate through and select, or single pressing to rotate through (long press to lock onto current mode). I think all of this could be done far more easily without taking the camera away from the eye. Any dial that 'commands' the tog to take the camera away from the OVF/EVF is a bit of a fail. It's why the Fuji analogue dials are mostly gimmicky and annoying after awhile.

Nikon clearly wants to keep Z 50 (i, ii, iii …) as an entry point to its universe. More fancy aps-c versions might come Z 60, Z 70, Z 80, or whatever they find profitable. we'll see. Not putting in IBIS and moving the Z 50 up the specs ladder is not very difficult to understand even though lots of camara enthusiasts would like to see that. Calling parts that is not updated "shit" is ridiculous, as the whole package and outcome (image quality) is what matters. If you buy a "new" TV, montor, laptop, gopro or smart phone or whatever, it is full of "old shit" as well. The producers update some of the components along the way. They don't put in all their latest specs on their entry level product. If they did, they'd pretty soon be out of business as profit/cost ratios are down the drain. If you don't like Z 50 (i or ii), don't buy it. If you prefer a Sony, buy a Sony. I have a compact aps-c Sony, it's good, but it's not half the fun shooting with as a Nikon. I don't see the problem.

The market today simply looks different than in the late 2000s when the entry level still did exist. Money isn't made in APS-C. But without it they could lose future customers. funny to see a sony fan complaining that nikon use an old sensor on a entry lvl camera ^^ how long did sony used that 24MP ? ^^ As for the IBIS, a shame indeed but what about the other brand at that price range ? xm-5 ? nope. R10 ? nope. ZV-E10II ? still nope. Sadly it seems the xs-10 was a bug in the matrix and IBIS on sub 1000€ is still not for today ^^

It's tiny and IBIS worth having would make it much huger.

Well, Sony is using the old A1 sensor on the flagship A1 II. People are generally just dumb where this stuff is concerned, to be honest. Just want to find something to piss and moan about. Nothing to do with the capability of the body. Like a Pro Photographer recently stated, paraphrasing, ‘The Z50II is more camera than most can handle’
@malekith13Ай бұрын
@bsc001 Indeed, most modern caméra are way more than most people will ever really need, for me that Z50II would only need IBIS, i got a Z6 as an upgrade for my Zfc because i needed the IBIS for when i'm going to take some photos in church and other old buildings that usualy have poor light inside and felt weird comming with a tripod inside those, especialy in churchs ^^ except for that the zfc was plenty enough and the Z50II is even better In everything ^^

@@malekith13 If you’re into this type of architecture shots in darker light, the Z6/Z6II will be absolutely great. Or, even better, an old S7 or Z7II. Of course, the Expeed 7 helps with action photography and improved AF, but select the best body based on your main genre. iMHO.

Should read Z7 or Z7II.

The sensor isn't as good as the one in the D7200/3400 until the dual amplifier thing kicks in at higher ISO. It focuses at ridiculously low light levels though, which is a good sign. That might mean the focus system is awesome and the improvements are in software.

NIkon, we want a z30II, with ibis, the tilt-up and flip around screen like S1H, stackable 33 point luts like panny, 4k60 no crop, open gate, independently adjustable codec/framerate/resolution/crop-ratio sliders (yes this is trivial to implement, but they don't think their customers are smart enough to grok it), 26mp no aa filter, enel15c battery, nraw, single cfe-b slot. Feel free to make the entire body minus the grip out of aluminum for maximum heat dissipation. We're smart enough to understand why certain spots will be very hot during usage. Also, feel free to save money by not making it weather resistant, we're not cavemen. All this tech exists and they could pull this off easily, but they hate their customers.

I think their hands were tied trying to stay at the exact same price point as the original Z50. You have to remember that with all the inflation of the last 5 years, I don’t know if they really could have made a new sensor without increasing the price point a little. My only other thought is the Z5 regularly goes on sale for $999, and it’s full frame with IBIS. Still an old sensor though.

Usually cameras put the big features on the big cameras then the little ones just get these small updates like this, trickling down over time. I think it's actually a great update though.
@kalimarus2 ай бұрын
The 50ii will be way better for anything action. I have the Z5 and it's great for slower paced life. But trying to track anything with the EVF blackout is like trying to follow a target in dark room with a slow strobe light. The 20.9 sensor is also still a very good one so image quality is there. IBIS would have been the chef's kiss had they snuck that into this one.

This Z50 II release is no more than adding USB-C charging so they can keep selling it in the EU while maintaining pricing, market share, and profit margin to be about the same. So besides having USB-C charging, if the rest of feature is about the same as existing competitors at a similar pricing range, why do more? IBIS, increasing sensor resolution, ...etc all that you are you are looking at a different camera in the line-up that may or may not ever come to fruition, but in any case, that's not Z50 II at this juncture.....
