@@ts7071 a6700/xs20 are the cheapest new gen aps-c cameras with ibis, however both of those cameras have other significant improvements over the z50ii as well. Higher res and DR sensors, much improved video performance (codec and resolution), nearly double the battery capacity, etc. A worthy note is the a6600 which also has ibis for around the same price, but lacks a fair few modern features. The full frame Z5 also has ibis, but lacks loads of features that the z50ii has. I do wish they’d do something like a Z70 or Z80 that harkens back to the D5/500 days, but honestly at this point FX is just too cheap. Like back when full frame cost a minimum of $3000 for a D700 or the “affordable” D600 at $2100, sure it made sense to make a flagship class body with a smaller sensor to bring the price down and keep the higher end features, but you’ve been able to get a full frame Z5 for like $1000 for years now. At this point it just doesn’t make sense to invest into smaller sensors because FF is the sweet spot for performance, and the cost isn’t really higher.

Have used the Z50 for a few years. The sensor is great. The kit lenses DX 16-50 and 50-250 are surprisingly sharp and have built-in image stabilization. The full-frame Z 24-200 and 105 micro both have image stabilization and get extra range on this small body. I have owned and used a variety of NIKON DSLR/lenses, including the 850; the Z-lenses in equivalent price ranges are sharper; if you already have DSLR lenses, you can buy a F to Z adapter; the DX 16-80 f/2.8 is image-stabilized and has great optics. I own the Zf, which has superb IBIS, but it costs twice as much as the Z50 and is bigger/heavier. The Z50 is an excellent travel camera. Not convinced the upgrade is worthwhile for me. If this is your first venture into the Z system, I'd suggest getting a used Z50 with both the DX 16-50 and DX 50-250 kit lenses; there are plenty available at Keh, Adorama, B&H, EBay etc and you'll save a few hundred $.

Canon and Nikon are both in underdog situations. For cameras: Nikon only has the Z50 and now the Z50-mk2. Sorry, for this, I don't count the Zfc and Z30. - Nikon is missing the mirrorless equivalent of the D7xxx and D500 cameras. Unless their strategy is to push those users to FF. Canon has the R100, R50, R10 and R7. Fuji has the XT30ii, XT50 and XT4 Sony has the A6100, 6400, 6600 and 6700 For lenses: Nikon: The Z lens mount is open to 3rd party. BUT you need a lens with OIS, since the Z50 and Z50ii do not have IBIS. Bummer. This cuts out some of the Z lenses. Canon: Until just recently the R lens mount was closed to 3rd party lens makers, making autofocus lenses. And only the APS-C R mount has been opened, the FF mount is still closed. So if you get an R7, there is NO Sigma RF 70-200/2.8. You either buy the $3,000 Canon RF lens, or adapt an EF lens. And EF lenses have been and are being discontinued by the lens makers, so that is NOT a long term option. So for lenses Canon is definitely behind. Picture Controls" to me seem to offer nothing new here, except their marketing as a way to compete with Fuji's film emulations. Nikon NX Studio and Nikon cameras already since ages can create profiles and modify them. They can be moved around between cameras via the memory card. In the B&W section, Nikon added Deep Tone Monochrome that reminds me of 120 confection Kodak Tri-X - my favourite. (The 120 confection - 60 mm wide - was used in real medium format cameras and it differed from the emulsion on the 135 confection films.) When I discovered the Deep Tone Monochrome, I copied it to NX Studio and to my Z camera. The grain differs, yes, and that's a matter of raw processing software. But it's not an issue. The gradation out of the box is beautiful. The picture controls are just profiles and in the meantime, Adobe emulates these "camera profiles" with profiles for Adobe Camera Raw too. You can shoot raw (i.e. Bayer colour) and in post convert to Deep Tone Monochrome B&W. Or other profiles. Note that in Adobe, "Adobe Standard" means you use a camera-specific-profile that tries to make all cameras look the same: Adobe flat, Adobe neutral - easily displayed on a 7-bits per channel monitor that emulates 8 bits per channel - with limited colour space. While Adobe Camera Raw is the raw processor for/in both Lightroom Classic (it IS the Develop tab) and Photoshop, its resources are in the Lightroom directories: 1,287 "Adobe Standard" profiles that all try to make your images look the same. If that doesn't work properly, then "the naive" blame cameras and sensors, as they have no clue. It may just be a less successful Adobe profile for your camera (down to firmware version in some cases). Also note that cameras without OLPF shoot much sharper images than cameras with OLPF. You can see - ceteris paribus - the impact of the OLPF when you compare the sharpest F-mount lens in DxOMark when mounted on a D800 (OLPF, 36MP) to mounted on a D800E (OLPF Eliminated, 36MP). At full frame (photosite density), all Nikons under that 36MP have an OLPF, and above, have not. So a 24 MP Z full frame camera has one, but a 20MP APS-C Nikon has not and that's why they shoot comparably sharp images. When we first got cameras offered without OLPF, "we" had to swallow residual Bayer grain. This is just inadequate or failed raw processing as per the Bayer paradigm. Or lazy programming. Shots taken in fairly normal light levels should not have grain. But cameras without OLPF may have grain in darker image zones, low contrast zones, and blurry zones (where, in each case, better raw processing AI is needed to compensate the absence of the OLPF). Nikon have not upped their ante in this respect as in NX Studio we see detail loss, or in other raw processing apps we see better detail recovery, e.g. in the highlights. This can just be a matter of AI of the "learning" (as opposed to pure "algorithmic") type not having been trained enough before it was sent to market. Adobe took until 2023 to come up with improved AI Denoise in their ACR tool, while Topaz (DeNoise AI) was years ahead and DxO (DeepPRIME in PhotoLab and PureRAW) somewhere in between. Pressure from these latter two must have convinced Mudbrick management but the first version had extremely bad demosaicking.

I'd appreciate an analysis: how signifiant is a Raw shooter need to access the raw when a well thought out (raw+) JPG is available. You pitched this camera as a path to grow to shoot raw, but getting away from shooting only raw is a valid path, especially if the perdominant edits that a raw shooter would make can be anticipated and pre-applied. Perhaps only a handfull of well thought out film modes would suffice in 90%+of the time.

4:29 While it's true the old sensor isn't any worse than Fuji or Canon in terms of dynamic range, the XT-5 and R7 have 57% (R7) and 100% (X-T5) more resolution while maintaining the same dynamic range, so this really is a disappointing sensor compared to its peers.

Couple questions I would love you to answer on the podcast if willing. 1. Is the autofocus good enough to use for birds in flight? 2. Is the rolling shutter enough of an issue with the prerelease capture that it isn’t usable for birds in flight? The dream scenario I would use this camera for is to catch birds taking off using the pre release capture, but if the autofocus won’t keep up and the image will be a wavy mess then that won’t really work. Thanks for always reading the comments!

Thanks guys,..a lot of improvements to a good camera, albeit like many noted IBIS, even at a Sony level (OK, not great) would have been a big plus. More than just an incremental upgrade IMO. Older sensor I think is a testament to the fact that any sensor in a camera from the last several years is good enough for most uses. No need to improve further in many cases, so a lot of new features are largely just ways to make the camera be more fun or a better fit for social media uses.

In fact I need camera for birds and I have VR in the lens (Tamron 150-500), price is very decent. Zfc and collection of mostly Viltrox primes will be still my main camera, but bird detection and better AF was something that was missing in Zfc.
