Maarten, you simply do the best, most detailed and most pleasant to listen to reviews. I always look forward to seeing something you have done. Going form vid 1 to vid 2 is not even a question - I always just consume the whole thing. Sometimes it is a conversation and sometimes it is a review. It is always well considered and interesting as if you thought of making it so ... haha. Not everyone does that. As an amateur photographer I am so grateful to have people like you, and you especially, doing what you do. There is so much about cameras like this that I simply wouldn't know about. The menus are so deep and the functionality so broad that I would simply be overwhelmed. You make things easy to see, apply, test and use for taking real pictures. You also show that there is no harm done in testing - it is foolish, I know, but sometimes it can feel like I might mess something up irreversibly if I do something and your videos disabuse me of that notion. In all, I am saying not for the first time that I appreciate your work and the care with which you deliver it. I hope you are staying safe and enjoying yourself. I am, no doubt, just one of many very grateful and very satisfied subscribers. I really like the Z50. I am still having my eye on the Z6 (fewer feature compromises when switching from the D750) however I can't find a good enough reason to get rid of my trusty D750. It shoots great, handles excellently and provides everything I need except less weight. I usually carry it clipped onto my waist or backpack with a peak-design clip but I wonder if a mirrorless camera would actually be lighter. If it were lighter - would I take it out more? I would love to know what your experience has been. Do you shoot with a DSLR or have you completely moved over to the mirrorless side now? How have you found the switch if you have made it? I don't have money to burn but might enjoy and use more, a smaller and lighter camera and lens setup. Not sure if the Z6 would actually be that. The Z5 just came out and has convinced me that the Z6 is actually the equivalent path if I wanted to move but my D750 still does what I need. You can see my problem. Love to get your thoughts. I know you can't take the responsibility of deciding for me or even advising what I should do but, if you have a moment, your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your detailed note. It was a pleasure to read your kind words. I wouldn't be in a hurry to change from the D750 to a Z series. You have a great camera, enjoy it! Depending on the lenses you choose, the difference in weight isn't dramatic.
@iu11914 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks Maarten. Those are my thoughts also - at least so far. I have a 28-300 3.5-5.6. I know this is heavy, but I love it. I also have the obligatory 50mm 1.8 (The old one) and the 35mm 1.8 (FX) which I really like, especially as it works with the D750 even though it is an FX lens. Some slight vignetting but it is very mild and in some pics enhances the picture. If they came out with a Z610 with dual card slots and equalised the D750 for still shooting features. - I might be tempted but till then and for the next few years, (maybe even for the foreseeable future), it looks like I will be getting to know my D750 even better haha. Outstanding preview! I have shot Nikon forever but want a mirrorless camera. I love how you explain the camera and use the menus, which has always been the reason Ive loved Nikons. There menus are so easy to use and understand. If they had made the screen articulate instead of going down (what), I would have gotten this camera already. Maybe someone will make a cage for it. You point out some quirks which were also present on my D5600 - related items not next to each other in the menus, clunky enabling or disabling of features, and options that become unavailable for unknown reasons. It's disappointing that Nikon hasn't refined these things. Unfortunately I couldn't wait for Nikon to enter the APS-C mirrorless space, my Nikon DSLR's video AF was horrible and I wanted to record video of my baby daughter so I bought a Canon M50 and wound up loving it so much that I've moved on from Nikon. The Z50 looks decent, but Nikon is going to have to do better than "decent" to keep customers with so many options available. Excellent review as always, thank you for your work.

Maarten Heilbron, your review of the Z5 is the best (not one of the best) among reviews by other youtubers I have seen. Reason - Your detailed explanations in two videos gave a lot of info other reviewers have failed to deliver. Without personally visiting the camera shop, your reviews have helped me decide the camera choice for my style of photography - low light, night scene, high ISO shooting that delivers good to excellent image quality under such shooting conditions. In fact, I have been undecided between Nikon D750 and Z5 since the introduction of Z5. Your reviews have cleared my doubts and I am going for Z5. Reason - Z5 has the latest AF, digital image sensor and processors. Compared to D750 full format, the Z5 crop factor is a small trade off for me for my style of photography. Keep it up.

Excellent job covering the features! I am shopping around for a new Nikon DSLR to upgrade from D3100 and this one addresses many of the issues or lack of features of the old one. I was tempted to save on cost with the D5600 but I also know that already is technologically outdated compared to what I see with the Z series. Another consideration is the fact that Nikon is offering the F lens adapter so older lenses can be used...question is, fully functional or not? Still holding onto my old FM2...just can't let go of what cameras used to be built like!

Great review as always. Two questions - would love a response: 1. Did you get a chance to compare image quality to D7500 or D7200, particularly for low light? 2. In the category of APS-C Mirrorless, which camera system offers the best low light image quality and best dynamic range? Cannot afford full-frame mirrorless system, hence the question.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
I did not compare it to other cameras, I don't have the facility to do that - check dpreview and dxomark, who have an appropriate test bench. However, while I would suggest that newer APS-C sensors do have some advantages over older ones, in general you'll notice more difference between lenses than sensors. In my opinion, I would look to Sony for best low light performance in a model like the A6100/A6600 (which will not be to everyone's taste) or the Fujifilm X-T3 or X-T4 (maybe even the X-T30), which offer better dynamic range performance thanks to the X-Trans sensor.

Thank you for a detail review of Z 50. I am willing to buy a camera for wildlife photography, specially for birding. Will Z50 be a good choice over D 7500 in this scenario? How the Nikkor 70-200 mm and 200-500 mm lenses will perform with FTZ adaptor in Z50? Is the focusing power of Z50 quite enough good for "bird or wild animal" tracking?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
The FTZ adapter is one of the better ones to match older lenses to mirrorless. The Z50's focus system is generally superior to the D7500. However, I have not tried those combinations, so can't provide an authoritative reply.

I have a D7100 that I get good results with, but I'm interested in mirrorless. The Z50 seems to be a good way to get started with mirrorless without breaking the bank. I also hear that Nikon may be coming out with a Z70 in late 2020. I'm really on the fence about going for a Z50 now or waiting for that Z70 which would surely be even more capable. I also saw another review in which the person said he was not expecting much from these 2 lenses, but ended up very impressed with their sharpness. Your review makes me think this would be a sensible way to get into a mirrorless system. Have you heard anything about a Z70? And again, your knowledge and insight is very helpful and appreciated!

Nikon does not pre-release any information to Canadian reviewers - you're best of checking the rumours sites. I wasn't very impressed with the lenses - mostly because of the ramped aperture design. But why are you interested in mirrorless - what is there about the D7100 that's not doing what you need?

Also, I believe that the reason for mp4 and .mov file extension is so that an android or iPhone user can transfer a video to their device and use the file. I know android doesn't natively use .mov files and I may be wrong, but I believe this is the same for IOS. As for the capped number of bursts (while I agree with you about it) is there due to some users packing their gear away with the camera left on and accidentally having the shutter button depressed while packed. I know it's a convoluted answer, but as usual they have a very specific reason. Now if they'd ever share them with the general public a bit more clearly.... thanks again for the content! Cheers
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Oh, but there is no functional difference (except for audio) the only difference for the video codec is the file extension. As for the 100 frame limit, if that's the reason, why is Nikon limiting it for the majority of us who are careful users. For those that want this feature, fine. But let me set it to unlimited.

Maarten, as always a beautifully organized and clear presentation. Thanks so much. But I do have a question or two. So, how well did the IBIS work--would it work with non-electronic third party lenses? How did you like the video IQ and handling. So much of the time I'm inclined to think that APS-C is really the sweet spot for video, with full frame problematic to achieve fine focus, and MFT just too small for adequate DOF and low light performance. So, the Z50 is of interest to me...but it has to stabilize non-electronic lenses to really be useful.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
I didn't try that, I didn't have an adapter. However, as for video the electronic stabilization seemed better than average, I would guess it would be pretty good even with non-native glass.

Great review. I'm very interested in this camera, but I'm a bit concerned about the lack of IBIS; does the lens VR completely mitigate any need for IBIS? I've also seen that the two lens options are quite slow, how does this affect the type and quality of images that can be produced?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
First, ask yourself how often you actually need/use the indy stabilization, that the light is so low that it makes a difference. If you need stabilization for the situations where it's useful for stills, then this camera, unless you are using an adapter and non-z lenses, this might be worth consideration.

The ergonomics, and that wonderful grip are certainly a plus for the Nikon Z50 ( made in Thailand ). I see that people have given this camera much praise after their purchase. But there is that classic war going on of Canon vs. Nikon, and one can consider the Canon M50 which is of a lower price and the M6 mark II at a little higher price, as a good competitor to Nikon Z50. I like that Canon body is made in Japan. They do have more lens options too. Wonder if dynamic range and ISO performance is close between the M6 or M50 when compared to the Nikon z50? You hear of great Canon color science, but is that for real, or really a myth since you edit photos anyway? Which of these would you buy, Maarten? I should just add another lens for those cameras I already own. But ya know, the GAS, which is something that can happen to best of us, is a real phenomenon. -Loren

@@MaartenHeilbron Improved low light and dynamic range is one goal, and yes I know, that might be the Sony cameras, but the handling / ergonomics I see as lacking. The menus on Sony? Will give it a second look, as you have recommended a6100, and your reviews point out the goodness and any flaws. I am thinking small yet a good grip, and decent battery life, with a good touch screen for menus and point to focus area ability. Nikon sounds great, aside of a two lens system. I do have some Nikon glass I could use with adapter, but that adds to bulk in a camera. The Canon M50 appears to be their first hit for sales in the M series, though the M6 mark II of late is said to be in the much improved camp. The odd one is the base model Full Frame RP camera, which doesn't seem to have much dynamic range for landscape shooting. They make their own sensors -- wonder what went wrong regarding landscape ability? The ISO low light is good, but not great, but considering a low cost, that is a match between price / performance. The DXOMARK for landscapes though looks lower than many APS-C and MFT cameras. Alas, for all the numbers, all the data we gather, it all boils down to what a person enjoys using, and using it often. BTW, we all enjoy your professional video presentations -- thank you, and do take care, Loren

@@lorenschwiderski Thanks for your detailed note and kind words. While the DXOMark ratings are useful and interesting, I think they often exaggerate small differences. Maybe because that's not a statement that they agree with. The Nikon Z FX lenses are excellent with F1.8 apertures, and they are fully compatible. Personally, I think that the need for stabilization is exaggerated. Faster lenses, usable high ISOs, tripods and gimbals do a much better job.
