I love my Z6, but every now and then I think the Z50 would be great just to get to use the two DX lenses. Even more so than the 24-50mm, they strike me as terrific compact zooms. Certainly a great kit for someone who wants a lightweight travel package.

It's nice to hear how a pro actually chooses gear. While specs are important often it is more about how the gear fits one's work flow and if there are any specific features that are very important for one's work flow. Interestingly I was recently talking to a pro I know who switched to Fuji from Canon. His switch was driven more by the Fuji being a better fit than any particular issue with Canon. I have been shooting APS-C for many years now and have gotten use to the improved reach of APS-C cameras over full-frame. Though I can see some situations were a full-frame might be a better fit for me, mostly for improved bokeh. I currently use a Z50 and plan to use it as my main camera for the near term. Though if a Z50 II is released with IBIS I would probably get one.

To be fair to this camera, I don’t think it was ever intended to service a working professional. It was meant to be for enthusiasts who are just entering the mirrorless world. So for the vast majority of people who do not intend to spend a lot of money to buy a full frame camera, this would be a sound choice.

I was so happy I chose the Z50 as my first camera to get away from the 'point and shoots'. Its a great camera to learn photography on and I've had a blast using it to explore all the photography styles. The 24-70 f/2.8 lens makes the Z50 punch far above its weight class. That said, my Z6 II should be arriving today. Though I don't have the legacy issues that you have, the short comings you brought up are similar to what I've found. I'd like to try tethering, which the Z50 can not do. The low light could be better and the focusing is not as quick as the full frames. But it was through the Z50 that I found out what I was looking for, and if I had gone with the Z6 originally, I would not have been able to spring for the stellar 24-70 lens f/2.8, or other gear as quickly as I have. I'll be holding on to the Z50 as it still makes for a great ECD camera. As usual, your thoughts and experience are a great help and your positive attitude a joy to observe.

Great video, well laid out case. I have a Z6 and am considering a Z50 for a very different use case. With a high-quality 20 megapixel sensor and a 1.4 crop it makes an ideal tele range extension for travel photography. If I pop on my 100-400 lens it bumps it up to 150-600 equivalent at less cost, size and weight than purchasing and carrying a 200-500 mm lens or 150-600 lens. I could throw a Z50 in my bag with my full frame kit, and gain more range in my lenses at little extra cost. In addition, with the kit lens, I’d have a great light-weight package for walking around with.
@FormlessPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Same. That’s what I use mine (Z50) for now. Picked up a Z6II and have been loving every second of use. The kit 50-250 doubles to 75-375 and that little 20mp sensor is no slouch. Plus throwing right into the jacket or hoodie pocket is a big bonus instead of wearing two straps over shoulder or neck.

DX is not without reason. The larger depth of field is an objective advantage (only subjectively do we 'like' shallow depth of field). Whenever you need things in focus, like macro photography, it's easier with a DX sensor camera. In low light situations you also don't have to stop down as much. It also looks more natural in video. Cinema films have been shot 'cropped' - on 35 mm film but rotated 90 ° - for a century. The crop factor also means you get more reach for wildlife photography. A Z 500 with in-body stabilisation could actually be an amazing camera.

Also DX cameras have a higher pixel density per unit area than 24 megapixel full frame cameras.
@roybixby61354 жыл бұрын
Sensor size does not effect depth of field - only distance and aperture do. Nearly all crop sensors have poorer low light performance. Video is better on DX because the resolution is closer to 4k. I do like my D500 as a backup for wildlife (when I can start again). A Z500 would be great. The Z50 doesn't cut it...
@otraguardia4 жыл бұрын
@@roybixby6135, of course sensor size does effect depth of field since obviously you will be using wider lenses to get the same composition. I get the idea of loosing res when cropping but it really feels like they’ve done something different with these updated bodies. Interesting video - I have seen quite a few video's comparing the Z50 to the Z6. Sometime the Z50 wins, sometimes it's the Z6. But I see the true comparison should be against the Z7. Very similar pixel density, and not as strong at the z6 when it comes to low light and dynamic range. As a comparison to the Z7, it's much cheaper, lower spec, smaller sized body. So if you expect to crop the images with a Z7, or put it in DX mode, the Z50 is where it's at. So for me it's a great second body to go with my Z6. It's small, light, great walk about camera and a good substitute for a Z7 when I would want the maximum reach (i.e. better than a Z6 when you need maximum reach).

Secondly, the ligaments in my right hand have gotten torn up from my job. It can get worn out from the z50 and I'm not sure the extra weight f the bigger camera would me manageable on a long day. What do I not like about the z50? 1. The battery. If you could charge the camera while your shooting the battery issue goes away. Why the hell would a company make it where you could not. Wth Nikon? 2. In body stabilization. The compatability of the z50 with the z mount is nice but the balloon gets popped when you realize that compatability comes strapped to a tripod. No other lens option on the z mount but the kits. The z50 should come with the ftz regardless of the package bought. Body only, you get the adapter. Body and one lens, you get the adapter. Body and 2 lens, you get the adapter. The dropped ball is still bouncing away. 3.. No usb-c. Nikon! Like issue 1, what the hell? I'm not even sure how long it's been since my phone had a micro usb 3. I shoot in the sun a whole lot, everday. I'm not dominant to either eye. I just use whatever one the sun is not blinding. When I use my left eye. I tend to hit the top zoom button with my nose. Not all issues are about money so nail those.

like in our country. a z50 cost PhP 56,000 while a Z5 cost a Php 95,000, those price difference could buy you a motorcycle for commuting in our country. the main reason the Z50 exist is because there's a market for it for those who want a compact system ideal for travel and compact workflow. The development for Z50 isn't a burden either since they would just yank all the parts from the existing D7500 and put it into the Z50 body. The Z50 even becomes a No. 1 best selling camera in japan so I don't think the Z50 is such a bad decision.

In canada the z5 is almost double the price of the z50. Also the z50 has 120fps 1080p and vs the z5 60fps 1080p (both have 30fps 4k) The z50 has a flipped down screen which can be useful to film yourself, to vlog. The z50 is also very compact. So for someone just starting out, or for an amateur who needs to travel light, or someone who needs 120fps for fun and creative use but cant spend 1k more on a body, the z50 is a very smart choice. Also, all of the S lenses are compatible, so one can buy and upgrade the body later (unlikely since S lenses are so expensive, but it’s something to keep in mind) For me, I currently use a nikon d5200 and I want to upgrade the body, i want to have 120fps, i want to have the flip under screen, and I already have some F mount lenses, and I don’t have the money to pay double the price on a body. So for my situation, the z50 is the best. (but i’d definitely get the z6ii if i had the money)

Slightly off topic, but there is a thread on a Facebook page under the Group Heading - Nikon Z5 Z6 Z7 Shooters commenting on an issue with Z6ii RAW files in Lightroom and Photoshop. As a Z6ii user, Matt, I wonder if you could either substantiate or correct the views relating to this issue. It will be found at facebook.com/groups/zshooters/permalink/988932584939680/?comment_id=989326311566974. As my Z7ii doesn't arrive for at least another month I cannot look into this, but I do use Lightroom and Photoshop and have never experienced any issues of the kind alluded to with any of my D series bodies or the Z6.

I have a Z6 and a Z50 and I love both! The Z50 is great as a webcam for my live streaming (Nikon just released the webcam software) and for everyday family use! The battery to me isn't that horrible like everyone says and I have 2 of them! It def smaller lighter and more portable with the familiarity of my Z6! I makes a great backup camera at that price point.

That's the main reason I got rid of mine. Also they had no spares.

I know it’s only a detail and you still get the message in your video, but i just wanted to say that mAh is a unit of electric charge, so it is the battery capacity, not power! Power is volt times ampere. Cheers

Take the z50 to Teds as a trade in deposit for the 50mm f1.2

With Z6ii release, Z6 prices crashing of course. You can get a Nikon factory refurb w/warrantee for under $1400 now. Super camera still. Had a Z50 for a knock around cam, nice form factor. Couldn't hold a candle to Z6 low light focus, and that was last Dec before firmware 3.x focus updates. Sharp, lightweight optics, nice VR - but sent it back for refund. Batteries and same connect wire redundancy - worth hundred$ for Z6 favor in honest bottom line comparison. Looking forward to release of FF Nikkor 'pancake' lenses, otherwise all pluses for the bigger cam as a B roll/backup. Cheers!

Yes, it's about use case. That's why I went with the Z7 instead of the Z6. I have no interest in DX cameras.

The Z6 & Z7 have the same physical size sensor, both are full frame. The DX line has a cropped sensor and is not full frame.

In free market nations, prices will be dropping for Z6 and Z7. Something that should be kept in mind.

For 15 years I have used DX cameras. Nikon should let the APS-C line die.
