High-end enthusiasts love the hobby not just because you can show your friends and family pretty pictures, but because the experience of taking pictures is amazing. If I was looking for just the body, the Zfc might edge out the Z50. But, if I were looking for a kit, the Z50 2 lens kit + FTZ is still an unreal value at roughly the same price (literally the same price in the US) as the Zfc+28mm kit. I already have and use the Z50, I don't think i'll be upgrading until a Z90 exists, or a Z7 floats by me real cheap.

I have a Z5 and a Z50. The smaller one is very nice to have when I want to keep size and weight down. I like the retro look of the Zfc, but I'd miss the battery grip ergonomics and the U1 and U2 modes on the top dial. I really wouldn't want to give up either of those. The style of the older cameras is a very cool thing, but I think the world of ergonomics has moved on. By the way, why do we only have U1, U2 and maybe U3? Why not press a button and spin a dial to scroll through dozens of user modes, with customized names? It would just be a firmware change. Hardly cost them anything to add to our cameras. Am I the only person who thinks this would be a fantastic feature? Matt, you're a Nikon connected influencer. How about promoting this feature to them? Please?
@MattIrwinPhotography3 жыл бұрын

@EricMustardman2 жыл бұрын
"Why not press a button and spin a dial to scroll through dozens of user modes, with customized names? It would just be a firmware change. Hardly cost them anything to add to our cameras." That's exactly the reason why manufacturers don't build in features like that. They would only sell customers a camera once, the customers would configure their most used features exactly to their needs and workflow (or have them configured) and that's the end of the story. Another example: The AF hardware system in the Z-fc is the same as in the Z50, but the AF in the Z-fc performes slightly better, picks up objects a little quicker in bad light, has a face and eye detection in video mode etc. Bringing those features and improvements to the Z50 would just require Nikon to provide a little firmware update to the Z50 customers. But they just don't do that because they would rob themselves of an opportunity to sell the more expensive Z-fc if the cheaper Z50 received all the "new" features of the Z-fc. Customers always believe that manufacturers put customers' interests first. But manufacturers just don't. They put themselves and their shareholders and investors first, not their customers.

What I really want is a Z50 II with the Z50 ergonomics + the AF modes and flippy screen of the Z50.

Yes, me too! (if you ment AF and Flippy of the Zfc) I would also add charging while shooting and the IBIS. Would pay a lot for that. I currently have both Z50 and Zfc but would trade both or at least the Zfc for the upgraded version of Z50. Maybe it would be wise to leave Z50 as second/backup though. Zfc is good but the ergonomics is just annoying even with a grip compared to Z50 which is near perfect to my hands.

My thoughts exactly. That is why I’m still keeping my D5600 for the time being.
@EricMustardman2 жыл бұрын
@@EvilRubberBiscuit For what "time being"? Nikon will never build such a DSLM, because they want to phase out the "outdated" and too much competed DX sensors and get customers to buy their much more profitable FX cameras. Basically all their products clearly point in that direction, even their DX cameras carry a "Don't buy me, buy a Z6 II, Z7 II or Z9" label. I mean: Nikon has managed to offer two rather mediocre DX cameras in three years, one expensive yet quite slow travel zoom plus two very slow all-plastic zooms as the only dedicated Z lenses with a built-in image stabiliser. That's Nikon's way of telling you to either "Go FX or go f--- yourself!" My reply to Nikon's polite suggestion was to purchase a Fujifilm X-S10 with two very decent lenses, the XF18-55mm/2.8-4 OS and the XF55-200mm/3.5-4.8 OS. 😛

But the experience of taking pictures I think would be qualitatively different with a dials-first retro style body like the Zfc (or a Fujifilm) and for a certain type of photography I think that might be perfect, at least for me. Slow, contemplative, emphasis on the experience rather than capturing fast action or photojournalism-type images. Plus there's the amazingly tiny size! For street photography, family photography, and any number of situations where, for example, there may be strong backlighting, a flash is always handy. It was a toss-up between the Fujifilm X-T30 II and Nikon Z fc, and the Z fc won me over. I love the retro style, the features are complete for hobbyists like I and the image quality is awesome. The X-T30 is a great camera, features great lenses, too, but the Fujifilm RAW files are as much of a pain in the neck, or rather in an area a long way further down the spine, as is their RAW converter that requires you to connect exactly the same camera to the computer that you used for shooting in order to develop your your RAW files. Nikon's RAW converter NX Studio is a lot better and delivers excellent results quickly. The Z 50 might be a good camera, but it's unspectacularly unsexy; it looks like a Z 5 that was laundered too hot, plus a built-in flash. I never even considered purchasing one.

Whether it is due to your limited experience or you've simply forgotten to mention it: the flash is NOT meant ONLY to be used in order to deal with the "poor light" - it also is very useful in a broad daylight, if there is a need to "kill" (darken) the background, for example while portraying a back-lighted subject, in which case you get the face properly lighted without "burning" the background. That being said, I consider the embedded flash unit on Z50 a much welcome plus over the FC. I wish my Z5 also had such flash "unit" (just like my Nikon DSLR cameras), but alas!, Nikon decided to strip most of the Z line-up bodies of this piece of hardware...

So I've had the standard black Z FC in hand for about 24 hours, and I've used it a fair bit with the kit 16-50mm lens. These are just some initial thoughts. Optics are great. I'm not making posters so 20mp is perfectly fine. Colours are brilliant, and sharpness from the lens is fine. The AF is fantastic compared to my updated Z6. Almost making think about upgrading that, but I think I'll wait until a Z9 or Z8. Love the esthetics, and the usability of the dials. Menus very familiar, so no need for the chunky user manual. OK, so what are the negatives? Well, the body feels cheap. I would have happilly spent another £50-£100 for a tougher, heavier body. The plastic, especially at the bottom is horrible. For me, I'm going to keep it and use it when I don't need to carry the heavier kit. I'm even now considering keeping my Z6 kit lens (24-70mm f/4 FX) to use with this, which would give me a nice range with the 16-50mm native DX. Got mine from @graysofwestminster (UK), so received a lovely Billingham bag, lens cleaning kit and memory card. Good start all round. If Nikon makes a full frame verison with a better quality body, I'd be all over it. But until then, I'll enjoy this little spec monster.

I'm so drawn to the Z fc, but when it comes right down to it the ergo's on the Z50 (an opinion based on using the Z50 and never having touched a Z fc - but I have several older SLR's and have used them I have a decent idea of how they work so.....) is superior to the Z fc. Now if Nikon comes out with a version that at least matches the Fuji XT-4 in specs - I think I'd be on it like a fresh BLT. I want a higher end version to justify buying it. Doesn't have to be full frame though. As I look at the side by shots it seems to me the Z50 is a modern version of the Z fc and if they came out with a XT-4 spec'd version the Z50 I'd probably get it instead. I do like the smaller chassis format the Z50 and Z fc bring to the table vs the Z6/7. So I think Nikon should explore some higher end DX versions of these two cameras.

About " plug in charging / power"....Is there a battery pack, belt mount ?.The reason would be no needing to stop to charge up or swap batteries.
@OriginalWatchcow3 жыл бұрын
I know another nonstandard plug is probably not welcome on these cameras, but it seems like Nikon had an opportunity to use their SD8 battery pack system that is used for the flash units to be a power bank that is versatile and uses readily available batteries.

I'm stills-only but I prefer the Zfc style flippy screen which I have on my little Panasonic GX8. I find my Z7 screen a bit annoying in portrait mode if I'm trying to go high or low as it only flips sideways in that orientation. I also prefer all the dials, so hopefully they release a higher end Zf at some stage.

The ergonomic advantages of the Z50 outweigh the aesthetics of the Zfc for me. I had a Z50 for about a year and got some great results from it. As a D850 user I bought it for travel and to dip my toe in the mirrorless waters. I was convinced of the the advantages of mirrorless for landscape shooting and ended up getting a light used Z7 for a steal when the Z7II came out. I traded in the Z50 to fund some full frame Z glass. (Keeping the D850 for now just for wildllife).

Always enjoy your videos! I checked the Zfc manual and the Zfc DOES NOT appear to have ANY user/preset modes. The 2nd Fn button (for metering or subject tracking) and pop-up flash are invaluable. As far as rugged you can store your screen flipped over to protect it. Also, the tilt screens on Z#'s can't rotate 90 degrees down, to shoot over your head and not annoy the people behind you in a crowd. The USB-B port STINKS along with the non en-el15 battery on both. The Z50 wins this one for me all day long. Where is our Z500?! ;) I SURE HOPE Nikon lets us remap sub-menu items to the Fn buttons eventually, adds Wide(L) with eye detection, and bring the save settings to the Z50 via firmware.

Being an “old fart”, I’m going to say Z FC. it just looks like a camera while the Z50 might as well be marketed as a “tactical” camera. 😉 I just love the looks and while the functions are equal, the fully articulating screen and USB-C put it over the top on the comparison list. Thanks for the great video! 😎👍 EDIT - I forgot to mention, I’d get the black one.

So wait… regarding the power supply for ZFC - I’ve had batteries die in cold weather. Would I be able to have a portable external power supply in my pocket to keep the power warm, while continuing to capture photos??? In the old days, Nikon had an accessory that allowed the batteries be in one’s pocket and attached to the camera with a cord - remember?

Something else that gets missed is the lack of effects on the zfc. Then again, the Z50 doesn’t have as many options for post-processing effects in camera either (as compared to the D3500/5700 and D750/D780). I prefer to shoot in raw and occasionally add effects by in-body post (like the color sketch / photo illustration, in particular with some deliberately out of focus shots for a more abstract effect). I can understand that functionality missing on the zfc (and most of the Z FX models for that matter) to provide some product differentiation, but they crippled post processing in the Z50 as compared to the D3500/5600. If they added it back in the Z50ii (or even another Zxx body) I’d buy it in a minute. Better yet, incorporate the in-body post-processing effects into a version of their Capture software and you get that functionality for all Z and F mount cameras.

Hi Matt, The next iteration Nikon Z FC will even be more Retro! It will have a Flash Cube socket instead of a flash shoe... Hi Hi Talk about retro... The Accessory Grip will NOT be available in the US for some reason according to Nikon's specs. From the photo of the grip, it looks awkward and I think it detracts from the style of the camera. I was set to buy a Z5, then the rumors of the Zfc started & here it is. The 11 fps vs 4.5 matters. I like the more analog interface of the fc which should free up the command dials for other functions
@gyozakeynsianism3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the 11fps is with metering and AF in between frames though. With the Z6II, the camera is metering between each frame and I suspect the Z5 is the same.

@@ryanbeer5262 I think the number you cite for the Z6II might actually be for the Z6. The Z6II can deliver 14 fps with AF and tracking in between. Super fast, but still slower than Sony's and Canon's best.

I might have a stupid doubt. On a crop censor (1.5 x for nikon), does the depth of field also increase by 1.5. I mean.. does f2.8 provide a depth of field more like an f3.5 ? Hope I'm making sense 🙏
@ElectroTone3 жыл бұрын
A late answer, but: No, it is actually the exact opposite, even though what you would be experiencing is an optical illusion. 😅 In the focal (sensor) plane the Out-of-Focus blurriness from a point light source, IE. the 'bokeh circle', is *exactly* the same in physical properties. diameter in particular, for a given lens set to a particular focusing distance. This must be true, since the focus circle properties is dictated by the lens and not the sensor. _However_, the cropped (DX) sensor requires you to enlarge the captured sensor image 1.5 times more for a given final display size, compared to a FF image. So for a DX image and a given lens/focus distance the captured focus circle will appear larger. IE. in practical terms focusing is 1.5 times more critical / you get 1.5 times the blurriness on a DX sized sensor, compared to full frame. Edit: Alternative viewpoint: If you swapped lenses to make the DX image the same width in angular degrees as the FX image, then the DoF would be identical between the two (but now taken with two different lenses).

Hi Matt. TTartisan will be making three silver (metal) manual focus mirrorless lenses, specifically designed for the Z fc camera. The manual focusing lenses would be ideal to use with the retro Z camera, and pretty much cover most of the shooting needs of this camera. TTArtisian will announce new silver versions of its 50mm f1.2, 35mm f1.4, and 17mm f1.4 APS-C manual focusing lenses for Nikon Z mount, specifically designed for the Z fc. Now this would be a fun camera for sure. I’d buy the fc and these three lenses for Christmas, and have some fun.

Thanks Matt for your video you did spend a lot of the video talking about the video quality. It's really interesting. I get a little bit sick of video comparisons when the average photographer will shoot one video we get take hundreds of photos. There wasn't much of a comparison in terms of photography and taking photos and this is why I would buy a retro style camera like this. Yes I do a small bit of vlogging, but honestly I use my GoPro 10 because it's light and portable when I'm out on landscape shoots and it fits in the side of my bag. I don't want to lug another camera around for vlogging on landscape shoots. But it would've been nice to see a bit more of a comparison with the Photography side of things as essentially, it is a camera. Thanks mate will keep watching your videos

I just a used Z50 for a back up snap camera at events .. the ONLY thing that drives me crazy is the Touch Screen buttons for zoom in and zoom out .. I am in the US and NIKON here cant figure it out and I contact our friends at Grays of Westminster and that .. You CAN NOT turn off the zoom buttons functions at all on the screen. Why? if you are taking photos with the camera up to your face sometimes your nose or cheek will touch the buttons and thru the viewfinder everything enlarges ... that is a major pain. If for when I can use my Studio again I might get a second Z50 just for take video and I would use the ZFC for a walking camera for fun. I love the U1 and U2 functions and switch to them all the time. If anyone has a cheat way for this I would love to hear .. I have already tried gaffer's tape .. no good .

Hi Matt, I went to my camera store just last week and I could try out the Z50. It is small and light, features I was looking for, because travelling is slowly getting possible again in Germany. But I decided against the Z50 because of the small sensor. I will stick with my Z6 because of the possibility of more bokeh in my images. I miss a selfiescreen, though and I'm waiting for small and light lenses. For now I'm buying the 24-50 z5 kit lense, but that will hopefully be a just for a short term.

Z fc is gonna be my new camera end of this month...maybe with the kit. I need a small, nice daily-in-my-bag camera and I like it's look. I like your review(s) and videos - thanks for tge content!

It's a shame that the colour options on the Zfc don't extend to the back of the articulated screen. I like the brown version you have here but the black on the rear of the screen when flipped round looks poor. For that reason alone I'd probably opt for the black/silver version if only to keep the visual aesthetic throughout 😊

The Z50 is more like the other digital Nikons, so much easier to figure out if you already have a Nikon D or Z series. All the usual buttons are in the same place. Because of the retro look there is a bit of a learning curve to get used to the Zfc.

Not getting all the retro thing. I mean I'm 66 and remember my 1st camera Ricoh TLS 401 to my retro Canon AE-1 to Nikon F1 cameras. Tho I have a fondness in the memories. I just don't get why I would give up ergonomics of having a grip or much used controls that makes getting the shot easier and seamless. Instead of stuck with knobs and buttons on top which means taking my eye away from viewfinder to look at controls. So guess I am not the target. But anyone seriously wanting to learn and grow into photography I would point them to the Z50. As the Zfc seems more about the aesthetics of a past era. Sacrificing usability for looks.
@gyozakeynsianism3 жыл бұрын
I hear you and personally I've been on the fence about getting a retro-handling camera (Fuji or now this Zfc). But I think the difference in experience is the fact that the dials force you to slow down, and maybe that also forces you to think more about the shot in front of you. Is it for action? No, you'd want DSLR-like controls to get ready as fast as you can. But slow, contemplative photography doesn't need that. Also, the dials may also help some learners (though I absolutely agree with you about the Z50 being a great learning tool).
@orbmiser83333 жыл бұрын
@@gyozakeynsianism Yep see the point but one of the good techniques about slowing down applies to any camera you are using. As I have my times of quick action. But on many walkabouts I have a sit down and look and take it all in contemplating composition just as easily on my D500 or my Z5. And any photographer has those fleeting moments where life whizzes by needing quick reflexes when needed. I would rather have a camera that can capture all aspects of life. As then I have options.

Having held this camera in my hand, it invites a different ergonomic model. Perhaps bringing your left hand more into play. For each of us photography is an endeavour for many varied and different reasons. I have been a street photographer for over 35 years, and I can certainly say that a camera which looks very humble and 'low tech' (even so it is not) will attract less attention. No firm grip and no IBIS is a no-go for me regarding Zfc but points for the esthetic (and flippy screen). Never underestimate esthetics, people. Yet, I find the Z50 completely uninspiring and struck with, as our friend Camera Conspiracies says, a cripple-hammer, even though it is a powerful small boi. I've been looking for a streaming + shooting camera to finally upgrade from my D7000 and into the Z system and maybe keep the sensor size. Unfortunately, for now, Zfc would just not be satisfactory for outside shooting. I love large grips like on my D7000 so I can maneuver it around. I also use vintage lenses, so IBIS is something I'd really love! I've been spoiled after trying a friend's XT-4. So in conclusion: neither does it for me, but Zfc is much closer to what I need. Business idea: Zfc II - has grip and IBIS. Insta sales in the enthusiast bracket, as most of use APS-C. :D

I'm honestly split on how great USB-C is. Yes, it's nicer than micro-B because of the ergonomics and the PD specification. But before, when I was traveling, I had a 4 port USB-A charger and a bunch of USB-A to micro-B cables, plus one USB-A to Lightning for my phone. Now I have a 4 port charger that as 3 USB-A ports and 1 that is USB-C. I have a USB-C to Lightning cable for my phone, I still need USB-A to micro-B for my power bank, that power bank has a USB-A output so I need a USB-A to Lightning cable as well, and I need at least one USB-A to USB-C for my earbuds. The rest of my devices are camera battery chargers that have both micro-B and USB-C inputs. Oh, and my shaver has a USB-A to proprietary with a voltage adapter in the cable. It's a bit of a mess. Though I do realise I haven't made things easier by getting that power bank that still has micro-B for input and only USB-A for output. But then there aren't many 6700mAh power banks with USB-C in/out. And there's no Kindle with USB-C either. Some websites say USB-C is unnecessary for low power devices, but it means more cables and more confusion. Sorry for the rant. ;)
