Nikon might not have leapfrogged the competition with these updated bodies (not sure why so many reviewers seem to expect this). However, they are now producing competing bodies with class leading image quality, with an associated lens line up which is quickly growing and proving superior in nearly every aspect, and doing so at a better price point :)

Fro, when you do the full test of the Z6ii, please maximise the autofocus capability. You do this by: 1. Change menu A3 (focus lock on) to 'quick' 2. Change menu G4 (video af speed) to +5 (fastest) 3. Set 'when to apply' for item (2) to 'always' 4. Change menu G5 (video tracking sensitivity) to 'high' This will DRAMATICALLY improve the lock on and focus tracking in all autofocus modes, but mainly in AF-C. Two of the above settings are for video, but for some reason they transfer over to improve the focus of stills as well. This will, however, make the changes in video focus really snappy, which I don't find to be a problem.
@stepheneckert4006
@stepheneckert4006 3 жыл бұрын
All of this was already set prior to what you see on the screen. We maxed out the cameras to the quickest AF settings because that’s how we would program them in the “real world”. None of these were set to default settings.

Yep, if I am already in the ecosystem, and I know how to make results, why would I bother with other cameras, which have just a slightly better AF but are on par or inferior (be it ergonomics, picture quality or price) to my camera in every other aspect? Why would or should anyone really care??? One can jump from one system to another as much as he likes, but what such a person would really get except spending a ton of money? A better photography skills? Seriously??? Even Jared constantly admits that you can't go wrong with any of big 3, so it all depends on your needs and oreferences. Some (a little bit lazy imo) photographer would want perfect eye af straight out of the box, the other cares more about picture quality, ergonomics and flexability... Brand wars don't make any sense anymore really

The autofocus in Nikon is very very good but just not at the level of Sony and R5. Speed of focus is essential with kids who never sit still and wildlife. Sometimes a bird will land on a branch for 1 second then off. Falcons reaching well over 100mph in a dive…. If it can’t keep up with my 6 year old running towards the camera it doesn’t have a chance with Birds of Prey. For that I have to swap to D500 but would love something better for same ballpark money as the z6 ii. So for me it’s probably worth waiting for ziii the r6 autofocus is definitely better however no bsi illumination and 20mp is worse for cropping in

Birds fly in a much smoother manner, and their distance from the lens is within a very small range (those 2-3 millimeters close to the infinity mark). Mark Smith was shooting birds even with the Z7 mark 1, which is not even suitable for that use. I bought the Z6 earlier this year as a lighter weight alternative to my Nikon D850 and pro quality F mount glass, mostly for travel (how’s that working out for me? Thanks for nothin’ 2020) . I actually love the camera, and the images I have captured with it. I will not be going for the Z6 II, as the differences are not significant enough, given my use case. However, because I have now invested in the lightweight and really good Z glass S primes and f4 zooms, I have pre -ordered the new Z7 II. The D850 is, and might always be, my favourite camera, but my aging back may push me to almost full time mirrorless sooner vs later. By the way, this 🇨🇦 calls it a Nikon Zed 6 II . Cheers.

Nikon Z6 II AF is clearly better but not by much, because Z6 is already really good. Z6 II will definitely be more future proof with firmware updates improving it even more overtime, plus not to mention all the other improvements over Z6. For anyone that already has Z6 though its probably not worth the upgrade, but for anyone else looking for a new mirrorless camera or making the jump to mirrorless for the first time then you cant go wrong with Z6 II.

A couple of things are important to remember when doing AF-C tests, which require either (shock-horror) reading the manual, or having historical knowledge of how Nikon developed both subject tracking and (yes) eye-detect back in the 1990s: (i) 3d-tracking looks primarily for colour information; as you started tracking on your grey top, the camera very accurately maintained focus on that. There is no reason to shift to faces/eyes as they are a different colour. This is particularly useful for birds, cars etc. (ii) Face detect is in fact also automatically eye-detect. All systems identify faces as three oval shapes in a triangle arrangement (2 eyes, 1 mouth). Hence, there is no reason actually to show the little eye-box unless the face makes up a very large portion of the frame such that the DoF would be less than 1-inch. Therefore, whilst on either model you may not see the eye-boxes when a subject is more than ~3yd away, such would only be giving spurious accuracy anyway. Finally, your very erratic movement combined with your blocking flowing-locks would be extremely difficult for any system to lock onto an eye. The tracking modes are typically designed to pick up something larger moving fast like a whole tennis player, grand-prix car etc. Very few people want Federer's eye to be in focus but the rest of his body blurry. What they want is the whole of Federer in focus and the background and foreground out. In essence what is important to realise is that AF-C modes are typically optimised for sports and wildlife, they are not designed for erratic portrait subjects, as most (professional) models tend to stay still.

sounds about right. the image processing power probably wasnt there with the single processor, but it is there with the dual processor. with that said, i dont really see much benefit of eye-af beyond a certain distance. the z6 could pick it up when they eyes were actually large enough. a computer can always "guess" where they eyes are even if they arent large enough to focus the pupils on, which is what i expect a lot of cameras are actually doing.

Though from the initial look doesn't seem like a drastic difference, but hey, if the hit rate is good and you are getting above 90% in focus consistently, then its working great. I don't think there's any camera with a 100% hit rate. I don't think above 90% (whether it is 90 or 95%) it makes a huge difference anyways. If the A7III with 10 fps get 95% in focus and z6iii with 14 fps gets 90% or 11-12 in focus, that's still more pics in focus for the z6ii.

This preliminary test is seriously flawed. I would expect the hit rate to be similar in harsh daytime light. Most people that need eye AF are needing it for portraits in low light scenarios. My guess is that the mark 1 will not keep up with the II in lower light.

@@carjac820 I doubt it. Right now the Z6 is still sold for $1800 where I live, and the main reason I'd choose the Z6II over the Z6 is the SD card slot, since XQD/CFEs are still ridiculously expensive and their prices aren't likely to drop any time soon. The Z6III probably won't be too different from the Z6II to justify buying it.

At 12:20 your statement was unfortunately incorrect. Z6ii doesn't automatically switch from subject tracking to face/eye tracking. Your z6 was set to subject tracking and your z6ii to face/eye tracking. Just pause it at 12:23 and you will see that.

Recording video is hard to tell if the image is actually AF sharp as you cant pixel peep as easily as stills and all of this looks 100% usable from either camera. Video AF in non raw looks fine. Time to see how AF in Raw looks along with subject tracking on moving subjects for photo. Still, nice to see.

The camera seems to be okay, but the question is whether or not the camera attracts more buyers than the original because if the cameras stay on the shelves while Sony’s and Canon’s walk out the door, it really doesn’t matter how good the camera is. Early signs are that buyer reaction has been closer to “meh” than excitement. Hopefully that turns around because none of us want Nikon to slide further down the market share graphs.

It sounds like the Z6 ii is a step in the right direction. While the processor is dated, doubling the processor should allow for much better upgrades in the future once the better firmware comes out. While I wish Nikon was pushing the envelope more, remember that it took Sony a 3 iterations to make one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market. I don't think that this is pro level camera yet, but I am confident that Nikon will continue to advance their Z system. The Z6 iii and Z7 iii should be that pro-level mirrorless camera that competes with Canon and Sony, but for now, I'm optimistic with the Z6 ii and Z7 ii.

The IBIS is better than Sony. The price is better than Canon. But ooooohhhh nnnnnoooooo, let's just bang on AGAIN and AGAIN about eye-AF as that is all that counts and before eye-AF no-one could take a photo capably.... It's so boring. The Nikon EXCELS in many areas, but these influencers are obsessed with one tech aspect where the Nikon is fine anyway.

Looks like from your footage that the Z6 II is more 'sticky' on the face & eyes, but it's hard to tell. Anyway, Manny Ortiz has just posted a video testing the AF for portraits on the Z6 mk2 and it seems pretty impressive, especially when using the wide-area eye AF which limits the AF area with a red box overlay thus reducing the chance of hunting or jumping to the background.

Hi Jarod, need your view on this. I'm a photo enthusiast and looking to buy my first mirrorless camera. Divided between Sony a7 III and Nikon Z6 or even Z6 II if it's really a good upgrade from Z6. Sony has the advantage of having Sigma lenses which allow to buy good glass at favorable price. Nikon has the advantage of being a better ergonomic body, better color. The problem with Nikon is that no Sigma lenses and Nikon's are way to expensive. Is it worth buy the a7 III today against the new Z6 II? I’m actually more interested in how its image quality compares to the Canon R6. And when i shout people and need eye focus, they usually aren’t jumping all over. I do more landscape and city scape, and night photography. So getting more dynamic range, low noise and better initial metering are bigger priorities for me. We’re all hearing how Canon’s r6 sensor is so much improved. But, looking at images from both (albeit second hand via the internet), the Nikon/Sony-sourced sensor still seems to be capturing more detail in the highlights and shadow areas. Would love to hear your detailed scrutiny of that.

Thanks for the video, can you do the exact same test but with longer shutter speed like 1/60 -1sec. Reason is to test out the shot is from previous focus point or the current one. Having doubt with this, Nikon already added extra processor, the overlay performance shouldn't be the same like old version, only the real focus point will make it like that.

I would't judge the af performance based on where the yellow square is in the frame. Seems to be just the representation of how af works, not the real point in focus, which is more precise. And yes, you can significantly adjust performance in the menu (which Fro didn't consider to do). Personally would upgrade from z6 or rather get a second body, or get a Z7 2, but 50/1.2 is comming....
