Thank you for all your great work! Can I ask a technical question? You mentioned aperture v extending the exposure here I think. I have the Nikon 14-30 f4 lens. I also have the 20 1.8. However, I was wondering, even tho the f4 lens is pretty slow, can that be 'compensated' for by simply extending the exposure by using a tracker? Or does signal/noise maths mean that larger aperture will ALWAYS beat longer exposure? I thought if I can get 60 seconds on a tracker on the f4 lens, it might be equivalent to say a single shot of say 15-20 seconds on the 1.8. Probably some law of light that means the f4 will be a compromise I'm assuming!
@nightscapeimages.richard20 күн бұрын
Yes I think if you're using a tracker then you'll be fine with the f4 aperture. There are other factors at play . .for example Light Transmission . .many prime lenses are better than zooms at this. This manifests in vignetting etc.

I'm glad the z6iii came out. I don't have any plans to get one, but I've found that Nikon brand F-mount glass has come down considerably since its release, so I'm picking up some good deals on AF-S lenses. The problem I've had since upgrading to mirrorless is that, unlike my old D600, my Z6 doesn't register the aperture changes in the metadata on my lenses that have manual aperture control, and AF only works if the motor is in the lens. Good Z glass is still a bit expensive for my budget, but I'm watching for the deals. For now, im happy to use the FTZ adapter.

Many photo workshops I'm primarily the lone Canon shooter. All others Nikon and maybe a Sony. Trust me, I've seen my fair share of excessive shadow noise in my older Canons even when shooting several minute long exposures. My canon R5's pretty good art night and still lags a Sony A7 III I use. I've always marveled at the Nikon night image quality vs my Canons. I'm actually considering ordering a Z6 III provided the skies here in the northeastern US actually clear at night.

I purchased the Z6III to compliment my Z9, and it is a good all rounder, with the AF vastly improved, however, for night sky photography, at this point, I don't really see an advantage over the Z6II. I still use my Z6 frequently and get very good results, however, it doesn't have the extended shutter speeds, and the ability to run off of a battery pack, which means needing a intervalometer and battery grip to get the extended capability. Personally, I am questioning whether or not I should have just ponied up and extra cash and gotten the Z8, but I will need more shooting time with the Z6III in all different environments before rendering a final opinion.

@richardmurray18584 ай бұрын
@@doriangray8007It’s a tough one to answer as it depends what else you shoot. To let you know i have a Z6 (Astro Modded), Z9,8 and a 6iii. I professionally shoot football/soccer and i got the z6iii mainly as my second body to my main Z9 (Z9 with 400mmnTC and Z6 with a 70-200mm). The 6iii is great for that. I shoot nightscapes in my spare time and love my modded Z6. I have just come back from a test shoot with the z6 vs z6iii. Basically my take away is the difference between the two is marginal for Astro landscape (but is noticeable). The 6iii is by far the best all round camera out of the two so if you are shooting lots of things (especially fast action) get the 6iii and you will love it and it still holds its own shooting Astro landscapes. If you just shoot night landscape Astro then just stick with the original z6.

Great test, thanks! You’ve confirmed my finding as well, that the Z6III is fussy about power sources and cables. Very odd. And internal batteries! I bought a pair of SmallRig batteries supposedly compatible (and they are on earlier Z6s) but not on the Z6III. It just powered up enough to provide a warning about the battery incompatibility and then refused to work. Maybe after a firmware update. And yes, the dynamic range issue is a KZbin fueled tempest in a teapot. I have found the Z6III is about one EV less tolerant of under exposure than earlier models - it can’t be underexposed by more than 3 stops where the Z6 could withstand 4 stops under exposure and still look OK when lifting the shadows. So, yes, it is worse - the price for having the faster readout sensor for other benefits, most of little use to us astrophotographers. But as you say, even 3 stops under is more than you should ever have to deal with if you expose images properly to begin with. And the features like Starlight View, extended shutter speeds and the red menus are great for us. I’m finding it’s also not bad for red sensitivity. Nebulas show up pretty well for a stock camera. I’ll be interested in your impressions against your modified Z6. Cheers!

Going to purchase a prime lens next (might splurge on the 85 1.2). Looking forward to getting back into photography like I was a few years ago. This video has inspired me to do some night time photography. What lenses would you recommend for this? Thanks 😊

I have not used a Z8 but I don't think the Z8 would be any better than the Z6iii. I think the Z6ii is slightly better regarding noise levels, but after editing you won't notice any difference.

About USB charging, as a power engineer, I have the following suggestions., the USB charging of Nikon camera are use PD Chat protocol, so you must look for a power bank with Type C output.(must use two type C cable) and make sure the output must have 7v/9v/12v. And I also observed a phenomenon. When I plug in the USB to charge my zf camera, I have to wait for about 10 seconds before charging starts. This time is really long.

Hi Richard, thanks for the very thorough tests and comparisons, that must have been a lot of work... I noticed you used the 14-24 f2.8S this time, how did it fair compared to your usual Nikon and Viltrox primes, if I may ask?

The Nikon 14-24 f2.8Z lens is excellent .. however I prefer the f1.8 primes for their massive light gathering power.

Richard, how do you go about light painting an image when you also need to focus stack foreground for detail (depth of field)? I go back and forth between camera and light paint each area at a time that I have in focus - maybe you have a better technique! As always, enjoyed your photos and watching you work.
@nightscapeimages.richard4 ай бұрын
Hey Kerry, in this case I lit each shot of the image separately. I may need to do a couple of shots to get it right. The 2 shot focus stack image in this video was shot at 14mm so it only required 2 images to get everything sharp. Also, I generally stop down the aperture on my close foregrounds which also increases the depth of field.

The flip LCD screen colliding with any cable plugged into the ports on the side of the camera is an issue that a lot of cameras have. A port on the front of the camera would surely eliminate this ongoing problem. It would be a helpful advance if the designers of new models of cameras took note of the problems that users find in the field and then incorporate the changes into any new camera release. Great images of course Richard and I liked your reflection image the best. 😎👍😁
@nightscapeimages.richard4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much Geoff. Yes I think the collision of ports is something that does get overlooked. They assume only video operators are using things plugged in when shooting from behind the camera. Usually on a nice head high tripod.

Thanks for the review, but I didn't quite understand the most important point - does the Z6iii have more noise than the Z6ii? Maybe you compared them side by side, with the same lens and the same settings.
@nightscapeimages.richard4 ай бұрын
I think the Z6ii has slightly less noise than the Z6iii but after editing it's really hard to see a great difference.
@vitalisvasylius73903 ай бұрын
@@nightscapeimages.richard I did a lot of testing between the Z6ii and the Z8. I have been thinking for a long time whether I can change the Z6ii to the Z8 as an astro camera. My conclusion is that the noise level is about the same in both (when looking at the same size photo). However, the Z8 has better colors and no red tint, hot pixels when making long exposures. In this area, the Z6iii can also be better because of the new sensor.

Well the D850 is probably the best DSLR camera ever made. But these new mirrorless cameras have many extra features packed into a smaller package. But image quality won't be a lot different.

i am considering buying Z6iii aiming to get a better Video features , i own D750 and Z6i for my Astro timelapse. Few question please (1) As i understand so far now, The low DR for Z6iii is at 800iso and below. If I shoot at 3200iso, there should be no significant difference in noise between Z6ii and Z6iii, correct? (2) Moreover If i don't extremely adjust the Shadow slide bar in LR that much, i won't get much noise image using Z6iii, correct ? / thanks
@nightscapeimages.richard2 ай бұрын
Yes basically all of that is correct. To be honest I think the narrative regarding the dynamic range reduction on the Z6iii is blown out of proportion. I didn't notice much difference at all and all the images I've shot with the Z6iii even at iso100 have been brilliant.

A note on the dynamic range. It's only in the 'base ISO' so high iso it isn't behind, it's quite good. BUT shooting well lit landscapes at ISO 100 it shows less DR than others in its class. This is all just based on measurements from photons to photos website refer to their "Photographic Dynamic Range" charts. Z 6 III falls well behind II and I. Once all are set to ISO 800 and above, they are closer. only below that does the Z 6 III show less DR. For how YOU shoot nightscapes, Richard, I highly doubt you'll tell a difference or be hindered! That said, I also don't think the sensor warrants an upgrade for you unless you wanted to shoot like, raw 6K video which IDK why you would for vlogs

Regarding the power banks not working: I have had issues with my power banks not working with the Z6ii and what I discovered is that if I plug a lens warmer into the bank along with the camera they work. I think it has something to do with the power banks sensing that the camera is drawing power. My theory is that the Z6ii does not draw enough power so the power bank electronics shut off the supply because it detects that the power bank is not in use. I had been waiting for the Z6iii to come out with the idea that I would replace my D500 crop sensor that I use for birding with it, but since it still has the 24 mp sensor and the price is so high, I decided to go with the Z8. I'll have to test the power banks with the Z8 to see if they work. I am planning to try the Z8 along side the Z6ii sometime for nightscape just to see how the higher mp sensor handles the noise and dynamic range. I suspect it will not be as good, but then again having more mp might make the noise a little less noticeable.
@nightscapeimages.richard4 ай бұрын
Great insights Ken. I've had the same issue in reverse .. Sometimes the lens warmer needs to be turned up high to make sure it draws enough current to remain on. As you've suggested I also often attach both devices to keep it running.
