I understand the contrast, crisp colors & sharpness thing but, having never taken a photo with an aperture wider than f2.8, I was expecting more of a focus fall off at 1.2. Maybe with some photos from a closer or minimum shooting distance would do it. Price isn't too bad considering what a Leica 1.4 lens cost. Anyway, great review & some nice photos.

Thanks! You see in the samples that I shot a lot of photos at f/1.2 - great smooth background blurriness. Apertures like f/2.8 or f/4 also perform very well if you want a bit more DoF.

Exactly. I have the 50mm 1.8, and I never shoot 1.8. I normally shoot 2.8 for 1 person, f4+ otherwise. And in my opinion no lens is "perfect" especially at that price tag. I think it makes it worse honestly. Someone shooting 2.8 can make the same $ vs someone shooting 1.2. Makes ya think lol

Thank you for excellent examples and review. I "settled" for the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 at USD$1500 less. So far so good. Do you have any experience with this f/1.8 lens compared to the f/1.2?

The 50 1.8S is excellent. I don’t have the F1.2 but struggle to see where it could do better except the 1 stop faster aperture (which is nice, no doubt).

Hello Math. It’s a long time since I watch your videos and I know you know a lot about Leica. I’m considering coming back to Nikon since the Z9 arrives… but my concern is that I work with a SL2 and S1R + marvellous SL lenses as of the Summilux 50mm 1.4 and the APO Summicron 90mm f2.0 My fear to switch back to Nikon is about loosing those 2 lenses… what is your opinion regarding the lux 50mm SL compared to this Z 1.2 regarding image rendering and this dreamy background separation ?
@magicalwishlist66162 жыл бұрын
I have one. Its truly spectacular. However the additional control ring is way to sensitive. I am trying the elastic band trick. That seems to work however you have to wonder if the designers and engineers actually picked the lens up and used it in a photo shoot. It is useful for Exposure Compensation

I have become comfortable with large heavy lenses as the Sigma 40 F1.4 is roughly the same size as the Nikon 50 F1.2 and it is always on my Z6 ii… I am happy to bear the weight because the quality and speed is fantastic. I would like the 50 F1.2 but there are other lenses I would like before I get it so I will have to enjoy it through the KZbin reviewers😊

This lens like all the Z series lenses is superb The colours and clean rendition either Nikon mirror less range is always very impressive It’s a shame that most other video channels are preoccupied with focus tracking and frames per second which realistically the majority of photographers will never need

I wonder how is it compare to the Leica 50 mm corn and lux intern of image quality and rendering. I currently shoot Nikon but this Chanel increase my desire to start saving for the Leica.

@@gentleman0678 I currently have z7ii so it is more likely that I’ll go for the 50 1.2. I just wonder if the IQ of the Leica 50 summicron, together with the SL-S is significantly better setup than the z7ii with the 50 1.2 s

How about to use the 50mm 1.2 to photograph food?

Shooting with this lens @f/1.2 begs for the Z9 AF. Personally, I dislike the control ring and have it disabled to avoid accidental setting changes. Also, I haven't shot with a 50mm primes for over four decades, but this lens mostly stays on my camera for now.

Why are these Z lenses so big? Especially in length, it looks like one can fit 3-4 F-mount 50mm lenses in that space.

To me it looks like sharpness is the only thing it does right. I don't like the rendering, the size or the price of it. But that's the beauty of choice, I can use something else.

Another educational sublime video on the quality of the Z mount lenses. Appears now that Nikon Z mount professional lenses are starting to leave other rivals in the dust. I use Canon 1dx Mark iii and Nikon D5 and D6 cameras but seriously thinking of just going Nikon Z9 cameras and lenses for all my work.

Great lens but it is iver priced. If it were double the price of the 1.8, more people would buy it. No way is this lens 3 times better.

Price is a good point, it is indeed an expensive lens.
