4:19 Regarding cycling subject detection. You can use the "custom settings recall" function and just choice subject as the setting you want to recall and set it to say, animal. You can then at least cycle from your current subject detection settings and animal detect. I have my recall set to the joystick button press and cycle from birds to animals.

Thank you for the great video. I have been considering switching from my D500 which I love to the Z8. You have confirmed my decision. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

I've had my Z8 since it premiered and it was night and day coming from the Z6ii and Z50. I still kept my Z6ii for astro but paired with that 400 4.5 and a 1,4 tele it boosted my nature photography.

I've been thinking about the 1.4x TC for the 400 4.5. Do you lose a lot of sharpness worry the teleconverter?

Glad to know you’re happy with your Z8. I don’t own a Z8 but a Z9. I mainly shoot wildlife and birds but have never been pleased with my Z9’s AF performance. My current and only telephoto lens that I shoot with my Z9 is Z600mm F/4S TC. They are considerably less responsive and accurate than my Canon counterparts. Despite the bigger body sizes and highly customizable buttons that Nikon offers, it doesn’t make any sense that there is only one back button on the top right hand side at the back.

Thanks for some Canon insights. It must be amazing if it is more responsive in the auto-focus. I'm not aware of the lens combo having any specific slowness, but someone like Steve Perry would probably test that. Anyway, thanks for your comment :-)

at about 4:15 you've missed something. You can assign Recall Shooting Functions (hold) to a button. I use Fn1 for easy use. I set this up for say Burds. Now say I'm shooting say flowers and I;m set up for that. Then I see a bird ! press Fn1 and boom, its set for birds ! I can. with that function save shutter speed, AF mode, fps, you name it. Works wonders.

Love my Z8. It really is that good. ISO noise compared to the Z6 is a natural result of the higher resolution. I find it pretty close to my Z7ii in noise. With the latest noise reduction in Lightroom/camera raw, I usually get pretty good results anyway.

Yes, it gives great results despite the little more noise compared to the Z6ii. But great point about noise and higher resolution.

Do you know when the Nikon Z9ii is coming, since you reserved it?
The reason that a 24 megapixel FF camera is better at handling ISO/noise is do to the photons being slightly larger than on a 45 megapixel FF sensor. The sensor is the same size on both cameras, but one is cramming twenty one more megapixels on it, which means each pixel is slightly smaller, which means less light gathering capabilities. This goes for ALL camera manufacturers. It's the reason why most indoor and outdoor under stadium lights Nikon sports photographers shoot the D5 and D6. Look at the new Canon R1 which has great low light performance with fast readout, it's because it has a 24 megapixel sensor. If Nikon "which I think they will" comes out with a 24 megapixel Z9/Z8 equivalent, it will be blazing fast with excellent low noise capabilities. I shoot the D850 with the vertical grip and Nikon Z9. The Z9 is a D850 on steroids with video capabilities the D850 could only dream of. The D850 is still one phenomenal stills captures camera. I have been shooting with the Z9 since it came out, the battery life is great as is the integrated vertical grip.

Thanks for the explanation on noise / sensor size. It makes a lot of sense 😃
