Thanks Ricci for your comprehensive breakdown here. One concern that I'm increasingly hearing is from sports photographers shooting indoors under certain LED lighting (probably PWM control in particular) are banding issues that Nikon's flicker reduction algorithm is just not eliminating. One person is going as far as suggesting that leaving out the mechanical shutter was little more than cost cutting exercise that other manufacturers will not follow. Nikon need to investigate this ASAP. It would highly damaging to Nikon's reputation if the Z9's replacement resorted to having a mechanical shutter. My gut reaction is this issue that admittedly effects a minority of sports pros can be sorted by a firmware update.

Closing remarks @29:31 - I do not believe in conspiracy theories but this is an excellent example of what a camera company can actually do when it's business managers are NOT trying to protect other models in their product line so as to not cannibalize sales. Nikon also does not have to worry about competing with smartphone technology capabilities. The Z9 is both impressive technically as well as value for the money and equally impressive firmware updates. This is a win-win for both the Nikon company and their customers. Bravo!

thanks Ricci for excellent as usual work! as a wildlife raw shooter I was so happy about the pre capture - only to be so disappointed its jpeg only. I wouldn't mind to have it in raw even just for shortest durations of say 0.3 or 0.5 pre release. or even only for smaller raw fps option of 10-15 fps (if its a pipeline buffer issue). do you think it might be possible in raw in a future update ?

I agree, or maybe as a compromise, be able to shoot in RAW once the shutter is fully pressed but still have the pre/post capture in 30/120fps jpeg. It's better to get that 'missed' moment in jpg than not at all.

Hi Ricci, I don't want to sound like a broken record, so I won't say it this time, but suffice to say I am a Z6ii owner and love the camera.... I have heard that the firmware is very close now. What I wanted to say was, where can we make suggestions (for firmware updates)? Through using the camera (I have taken over 8,000 shots in about 4 months) we get an idea of what we'd like to see and perhaps we don't know whether it is possible to implement, but we don't have anywhere (to my knowledge) we can go to make suggestions. It would be a useful exercise for Nikon, wouldn't it? I mean, I heard about their investors report, Nikon up to 2030, where I am sure they say they want to work closer with content creators... what about a suggestions page?

Hi Ricci, I have always appreciated your thorough testing however I have come across a problem with the Z9 and would like you to identify if its an issue with my camera. For my Z9 camera I cannot get 20 fps. 1. Menu Settings, A1 set to focus priority. 2. Af/c mode 3. 20 fps mode. 4. Whilst focusing either back button or shutter button focusing (Settings A6 af activation does not matter) At any Aperture between f6.3 - f22 camera does not get 20 fps and stutters. At any Aperture between f1.8 - f5.6 camera does get 20 fps. When Settings A1 is set to Release priority. Camera can attain 20 fps with no issues. Is this replica-table on your end or is it a fault with my camera. It occurs with z24-70, z85 1.8, Nikon f mount 80-400, nikon 105 f mount 2.8. It does not occur with 2 tamron lenses I have, however they do not have the Linkage aperture lever on the lens (unlike the f mount G lenses that do have it).

Just out of interest, have a 256GB and 128GB Lexar professional cfexpress type B cards in my Z9 , recorded at 8K 30 so far with no issues. The issue I am having is editing N-RAW in davinci resolve 18 in that the resolution in stepped down to FHD or less while playing then abruptly returns to 4K when paused. Very noticeable pixelation, making tuning image quality into educated guess work. Also if in settings I use crop , the image is displayed as if it were FHD. Maddening. Great video saved a lot of wading through the pdf.

What Nikon really needs to do is implement auto focus-box movement - e.g. if my chosen auto-focus area is set to a box on the left (because I am taking photos of a subject looking to the right of frame [subject's left]) and then the subject looks to their right (and so I need to compose to the right so that the subject is looking into the frame), what needs to happen is my chosen auto-focus box needs to shift to the right side of the frame... voila! The perfect focusing system indeed! This could be implemented across the whole of the focusing system and would avoid manually trying to deal with this issue. Of course, the auto-eye and subject recognition in cameras these days is slowly taking out the need for this sort of thing, but it would still be a fantastic option. Think subject recognition with auto-eye focus of a child/person/bird/animal looking left to right rapidly with your composition needing to move rapidly! Anyway, great video Ricci...

for the Angelbird 2tb your going to pay $959.00 for that SD card, which is a stupid thing to do, I use the new Atomos Ninja V+, and use a M.2 SSD to record my video this is how you do it. you get a NGFF M.2 SSD to 2.5in SATA III Enclosure Converter, this is where you put your M.2 SSD in, and it turns it into a SATA III drive basically to fit in the ninja drive mount. the m.2 drive i use is the (980 PRO PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ SSD 2TB) that only cost me $289.00 for the M.2 ssd drive, and only $9.00 for the NGFF M.2 SSD to 2.5in SATA III Enclosure Converter. so you get 2 TB for only the cost of $289.00 plus the converter of course.. Now i just got a XPG SPECTRIX RGB Gaming SSD S40G Series: 4TB for only $389.00 and this card works amazing plenty of speed with these m.2 SSD drives they are super fast and can handle more then you need to record 8K 60 fps and that is the most efficient method for recording your video, the cheapest also, in order to have 4TB of media storage to for my video using an SD card i'm looking at over $1,900.00, that is insane, with my converter and using the XSPG 4TB SSD it's under $400.00, so i can get over double the storage space to record my video's using the ATMOST NINJA V+ you need the NINJA V+ to record 8k and that external recorder is only $900.00 it will save you money in the long run and you get to record RAW and Prores RAW with the NINJA.. I have always used the NINJA for doing my video any way it's much better and i have never had a problem with it. And you get a much lesser chance of the camera over heating, because the Camera is now only outputting the signal though the HDMI and so the camera is working a lot less because the recording is done by the ninja so the processing part is not happening in your camera so that camera is working less hard while recording it's like if you had the camera on but not recording. so you will never overheat your camera in any situation , last week i was in MIAMI FL recording stuff in 8K 60P in 85 deg heat sunlight, and it never even over heated because i was using the NINJA V+ to do my recording.. and you get much better image on your screen with higher NITS you can get over 3000 NITS of display... So for all you out there this is what i would do if you want to save money and have a higher recording storage, don't use SD cards they are way too over priced, just use and SSD m.2 Drive and you got so much more for your money.. Oh and by the way SSD drives are way less likely to fail, SD cars have been know to fail from time to time, with a SSD, the chance of that happening is very low almost Zero chance. SSD Drives are way more reliable.....
@AngelbirdMedia2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, we develop, engineer & produce certified Atomos Storage media for Atomos as the only manufacturer worldwide , so we use the Ninja V+ a lot ourselves, great recorder. However, if you want to record 8.3K 60p NRAW internally which provides for awesome quality footage which can be easily graded in Resolve, I'd suggest minimum our CFXpress 2TB or 4TB AV PRO MK2 cards (CFXpress not SD) as they can handle the data rate of the Z9 as well as the heat it generates. as for the lifetime of CFExpress and SSDs etc it depends on the hardware used and most importantly on the way the NAND is written e.g. SLC, MLC, TLC etc... (see here: www.techtarget.com/searchstorage/definition/write-cycle) this is for example why we have our CFExpress B AV PRO XT cards which are SLC and usually have a lifetime of over 20 years vs average of 10 years with MLC, TLC etc. Same goes for our audio recording hardened AV PRO SSDs which can stand an insane amount of heat and write cycles during live Studio Broadcast etc etc. Kind regards, Christoph / Angelbird Team

Excellent update as ever. Hopefully new firmware for Z6ii will restore some faith in Nikon👍

Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions for my morning train journey! We're finally getting a pre-capture feature - yass, totally awesome! (I think I chuckled a bit out loud - people looked) Definitely a stand-out feature of the OM system and something that'll be very welcome on my Z9... except it's only for the 30/120 fps jpeg modes - booo!! I will definitely try it out and probably use it, but if it was available in the RAW mode I'd probably use it a lot more of the time because I wouldn't have to change anything to activate it. Any ideas why this restriction is there? I imagine the high speed jpeg modes might actually be something more like video and frame extraction in terms of the processing pipeline, so different to the RAW process. Anyway, I really hope that this is a road that Nikon decide to continue along and maybe add pre-capture for RAW shooting in the Z9 at a later date or perhaps in a future camera body...

Guess the restriction is because of buffer space available (has to fit 2 seconds or more of images). Still, if you can do it with JPEGs at 30fps, it should be possible with RAWs at 20fps, with compression set to max. Would be nice if it got added later as a third high speed mode (C20).

BTW, the Resolve 17.4.6 update has supposedly added support for N-RAW on M1 Max processors (native, not Rosetta). Not sure about other Apple silicon processors
@RicciTalks2 жыл бұрын
I’m running 17.4.6 You have to run davinci in Rosetta to read the N-raw files Davinci without Rosetta still runs but won’t read the N-raw files

Thank you for the update. I did update my firmware and I was particularly interested in changing function button to toggle versus hold but could not figure out how to do that, even after I went back a reviewed that part of your video. Could you provide a little more detail on how to do that? I was hoping to find an updated reference manual with the firmware update but could not find that on line. Do you know if one is available and if so where to find it? I checked the Nikon website and did not find it. Thanks.

Good news that Nikon are workign on the Z9 I am sure you have never been asked about this But do you think Nikon will do a Z6/Z7ii firware update soon?

Announced at the same time available to download on the 20th too

Thanks for the info. Shame about pre capture being jpeg only as that limits it to a very niche set of shooters. Can’t see wildlife people using it as they pretty much shoot raw. Still a nice update though.

Hi Ricci, I am on the verge of getting a Z9 but am concerned about the pose process ie editing. I use Premier pro and wondered if the codecs will be an issue with this program? Any advice is appreciated.

That’s very mature presentation.

Hey Ricci, great video as always. How much is the bitrate difference between N-Raw and Prores Raw? Is Prores Raw much larger than N-Raw and is that the reason that it's not available for 4K 120 and 8K resolutions?
@senseofeverthing2 жыл бұрын
Dear Nikon, I said it several times: The firmware update I'm most interested in is the possibility to close the shutter on the Z7, Z6,.. cameras while changing the lens. That's presumably just one line of code, so please, just do it and give me the option. Then I finaly can justify the change from my D810.. Oh, and if you could trickle down some of the new features of the Z9 or release a Z8, that would be great.
@stavros.fourfourianakis2 жыл бұрын
The case here is that the shutter would be exposed. Do not forget that Z mount is bigger than the rest and also closest to the sensor (or the shutter) and there the danger is bigger. I believe this is the reason that Nikon doesn't add it, because this would mean that more people would need to service their cameras.
@RicciTalks2 жыл бұрын
This Is never ever going to happen Iv explained this multiple times You absolutely do not want to use your actual shutter as a block the chances of damaging the shutter and adding to shutter wear and tear significantly outweigh any benefit gained by stoping 1 or two bits of dust ! The Z9 does not use a shutter it’s a specifically designed harder guard that drops down to stop dust The other Z cameras do not physically have this option
@senseofeverthing2 жыл бұрын
@@RicciTalks First of all: I truely appreciate your response. If course I already heared your argument several times and I do understand Nikons concerns, I just don't think that the difference to other manufacturers mounts is that big of a difference when it comes to exposure of the shutter. Anyway, if I can't have the closed shutter, how about a speced down Z9 within an Z7? :D

This is all great news for people who have and can afford the Z9, but as. Z7ii user I feel Nikon is neglecting us, it would seem the Z7ii has disappeared, no reviews of the abysmal and also the lack of meaningful updates, is this camera written off already ? having upgraded from a D850 and I use the word upgrade grudgingly I feel Z7ii user are being shortchanged and overlooked, the focusing from this camera is beyond poor, I even know pro tog who got rid of this system because of the poor performance in studio work ie missing focus and as for spots and action well that’s almost impossible,,,,,anyway hope you read this and maybe take a few minutes to address these concerns as I am sure there are hundreds if not thousands of togs like me and desperately disappointed in Nikon and the lack of improvements on the Z7ii.

Hi Ricci, thanks for your videos. I don’t have a Z9 yet but I just want to have an idea. What’s the recording limit for 4k 120p in N-Log with the Angelbird 512gb? Thank you!

Just updated this and have been finding bugs - seems like the number of options for the i-menu have been reduced? For example, I can no longer have 'release mode' in the i-menu, which is really annoying...

Your PC does not need to be intel based AMD works everything works fine even if your a Mac user with a M1 chip it works also you have to convert your footage.
