Giannis Antetokounmpo, Vassilis Spanoulis, Dimitris Diamantidis and many more Greek basketball legends might have never picked up a basketball if there wasn’t Nikos Galis. The Greek God competed with the likes of Larry Bird & Michael Jordan in his younger years, while in the second half of his career became a legend at Aris Thessaloniki, Panathinaikos Athens & Greek National Team. This is the story of the MJ of Europe: Nikos Galis.

By the way it is amazing that he had a highest ppg average than Jordan or Chamberlain. So one might say, sure but in a lesser league. I would say a different league with less opportunity to score. However it is also obvious that the whole team(s) knew that Galis would take the leading scoring role and worked with him. Panagiotis Giannakis was a very good scorer pre-teaming up and yet he let Galis do his thing with amazing results. Bottom line maybe X superstar NBA player would dominate as well in the euroleague of old but I doubt he would get NBA numbers even if he could but Galis did. Doesn't also automatically mean that Galis would get 30 ppg in the NBA for his career. One of a kind player though.

@@fliksn He did indeed. On an exhibition match between NC vs National team Greece. There were 2 games, some footage exists from the first, first game MJ got 35, Galis got 27 or 25. Second game Galis got another 25-30, don't know what MJ got. Some rumours suggest Galis had 50 against MJ , but this was actually within 2 games. Honestly though, the gap between the teams was PROFOUND back in the day and Galis was still not right at the pick. Rest of Greek player were basically amateurs. Galis still to this day holds the Top scorer position in Eurobasket from like 1987, and also hold the 3rd place as well :) I remember watching him back in the 80s...We literally thought he had a bad day if he scored less than 35.....every match....lol.

Actually, he is not Greek, but an American citizen, because everyone who was born in the USA is an American citizen. And he was definitely born in the USA, he doesn't even have a Greek accent yet. He speaks flawless American English. He didn't even know that basketball was played in Greece. He then simply decided to join the Greek national team because he wasn't accepted for the American national team. And that's why he played for Greece.

Nick Galis has a god status for us Greeks for many reasons. - Coming from America, he was the first real professional on Greek sports. This means that he wanted to get paid (most of the Greek athletes back then with the exception of footballers were part time athletes), but he was also a very hard worker. His success has driven a lot of the younger generation to see sports in a different way. - He also, made basketball popular and became a professional sport. - His failures back then in the Euroleague was due to the fact that no foreign players were allowed in Greek championship (Bosman law was not active back then), and there was a handful number of great Greek players. Euroleague powerhouses Panathinaikos and Olympiakos were created with many foreign players - or players that somehow got the Greek nationality. - The achievement, that Greeks got gold at 1987 and silver at 1989 Eurobasket with much stronger teams, with a team that did not have depth made him a god. - Galis is both a HoF in Fiba and NBA (Naismith Memorial Basketball HoF). - Galis was inspiration for a lot of Greek basketball legends. The next gold generation achieved more than him (Eurobasket gold at 2005, World Silver at 2006 with a USA win). It maybe harder for Giannis to achieve something similar, because European teams are more talented right now than in the past and also, Greek team is not as talented as 2005 (with the exception of Giannis of course).

Galis had also the ability to stay in the air longer than expected. His performances in lifting weights during training were insane. In a documentary ioannidis, legendary greek trash talking coach in aris, said he was lifting close to 330 in leg exercises which is insane for the 80's.His legs were made of steal. His side steps have been analyzed as well. The way he combined speed accuracy and always being one step ahead of everyone. His mindstep took the game in the entire europe to another level.Everybody wondered "How does he do this?".True story now.10 years ago in one of my previous jobs.A friend of my employer was an amateur boxer with aris.Trainings back then took place also in alexandreio stadium in a different room. After training they had to cross the arena in order to exit. They saw galis walking up and down the stairs struggling a lot."galis is struggling.what the hell".Once they passed really close to him they realized he had tied weights to his legs.He was the first professional basketball player ever in europe and those amateur boxers realized it that day. When that guy was telling this story he had a look in his eyes. That was admiration. It was love respect and mostly "i wish i was him".This is galis.A living god among us.

Galis is definitely the best player to never play in the NBA. Later generations can argue about Bodiroga and Diamantidis, but most people do not understand that Galis's feats while still being amazing by today's standards were even more impressive, considering that he was a 6ft guard getting most of his points in the paint. In today's game with the explosion of the 3 pointer and the higher pace it is way easier to score / rebound / assist. Every superstar has bloated numbers. So 33.5 ppg in Europe (40 min games) in the 80's is INSANE! Also, the man walked in the air, so....

@@alexandrosbeleris6957 I will admit that ranking players is a bit subjective. Schmidt was indeed an amazing scorer but I believe that Galis's impact on the sport was greater. Brazil had basketball tradition way before Schmidt came. However, Galis changed the course of European basketball. If Greece didn't win in 1987, the sport might have remained in relative obscurity within the country. That means no 9 Euroleague titles in 17 years for Greece, no Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Papaloukas, Giannis, Itoudis and even possibly Doncic too. Yes, I know it is hypothetical, but the turning point was so distinct that you cannot ignore it. In terms of impact, for me, Galis is comparable only with Jordan.

Not the best all around player we have ever seen in Europe, but certainly the greatest scorer ever, noone will ever be the scoring machine he was. Top scorer in every competition he played. As Sabonis mentioned, if Galis wanted to score he would do it no matter the opponent. Drazen Petrovic said "if i am the son of the devil, then Galis is the devil himself". At Galis era, all opponent teams would focus on stopping the rest of the players of Galis' team , for Galis they just knew that he would score 30 or 40 points, they could do nothing to avoid that. The Greek basketball God indeed, the one and only Nick Galis! I feel blessed to have lived in his era.

I see a lot of comments and I would like to add some more perspective on Galis' impact for basketball in Greece. In 1968 AEK Athens, won the European cup final. The game was hosted in Kalimarmaro stadium (open) with 80 thousand attendants, I think it's still the Fiba record of attendance in a single match. Nevertheless, even this success (which was huge for the nation) didn't really ignite basketball... Galis' performances and eventually the first (national) European title in 1987 made everybody fall in love with basketball and of course as many said and Galis during his hall of fame inauguration , every single neighborhood and school back then installed a hoop. It took the caliber and achievements of one single player to inspire a whole nation and draw of course the attention of all the basketball powerhouses of the time (national or clubs in Europe).

Many thanks for this trip down memory lane guys. Galis is the cornerstone of Greek basketball he was the centerpiece of an excellent 1987 Greek team and the unbelievable success they brought indeed made the entire country play baskeball since. Those who were not born at the time will probably not understand the magnitude of that success, but consider this, what it took to prevail over the then Yugoslavia and Soviet union. Imagine facing a team comprised of all the countries that were soviet union, Or Yugoslavia, imagine Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and a few other countries fielding one team today from all their best players put together. Just a few names for 1987 Yugoslavia: Dražen Petrović, Toni Kukoč, Stojko Vranković, Vlade Divac, Dino Rađa, Žarko Paspalj and these were just the Yugoslavian youngling role players coming off the bench (except for Petrovic)... Amazing times for Greek baskeball. Thanks again and maybe make a basketball legends series for other important players of the recent European past as well. Plenty of amazing European players!

This guy (along with his very talented teammates during that time) showed Greece how to win and what it takes to be the best and really uplifted our basketball to a world class level for the next 30 years inspiring an entire younger generation. MJ is a different beast altogether, both legendary scorers for sure, but other than that they were wildly different players. There's a little known fact that probably most viewers won't know: During his tenure with Aris (and I think some games with PAO BC, but I'm not 100% on that) Galis formed with Panagiotis Giannakis one of the best backcourts in Europe, but before they joined forces Giannakis was playing for Ionikos and they had a legendary game as opponents. On 24/2/81 Ionikos vs Aris ended after overtime 113-114 and Galis scored 62 points to snatch the victory for Aris, while Giannakis scored a mere 73 points... No 3pointers mind you!

Nick had a bunch of skills, that even today would be top notch, enough to place a player in the elite. He had a huge jump shot, very strong legs and core, which made him look like he was staying in the air, not the fancy way MJ did, but with similar success. He had great touch, control of the ball, new the board and how the ball reacts with it. His first step was explosive. Enough for the opponent guarding him to lose him. He enjoyed physical contact. Never hesitated to rush within the whole defense and score from the paint. Like Giannis, but in a 6" body. And he was a great in shooting 3s, steals and assists. Some people underestimate these facts, but he was a great defender too. As he was saying in his few interviews he gave all these years, he kept energy for when it mattered most. A bionic athlete, with a great physical condition. Bless you Nick!

I met Galis when I was 8 and got his autograph - it was an amazing day. I always have a debate with my dad - for me bodiroga and milos teodosic were better players, but I was too young to appreciate Galis in his prime. Either way, I am greatful for Galis - without him we wouldn't have Antetokounmpo. On a side note, all the Greek diaspora I have met in Chicago and the rest of America are really cool people and I love how they have held on to their European roots. I hope to go back there one day.

Galis is even bigger than MJ, because of his impact on a whole nation. His accomplishment was that he inspired the next generation of Greeks in every competitive field and made basketball the no 1 sport in Greece. Analogically, he was more influential than MJ. That's why he deserves our respect.

NBA existed before MJ. Basketball in Greece didn't really exist before Galis. Galis forced a whole society to watch basketball, Greece's youth to play basketball and also forced a radical change on government policies in terms of sports. A football (soccer for our us friends) dominated country, suddenly appeared to have a hoop in every school and neighbourhood.

Almost all his shots were guarded, and by one or more taller or bugger guys, and the game was slower with less space and set attacks ans defences. It was special hooks and shots. Maybe this is why someone would not understand from papers. They did not understand his break of the back while on air.

That is a great video, and he is the GOAT of european basketball, considering all the facts you talk about, for example his height. He is an idol for all of greeks 40+ years old. Not for the peformance, but mainly for tha fact that short can win against taller, poor against reacher, few against many. You need to work hard, believe in yourself, and do it like Galis.

To understand how great he was and how HUGE his impact was I will just say this. Galis has done something that some huge NBA players have not been able to do. Galis lead a team that it's best place prior to that was once the 8th in a Eurobasket to the top of European Championship and most importantly against two superpowers like USSR and Yugoslavia as Galis played in that era and not nowadays where these countries are seperate and thus weaker. To put it into perspective it is like Giannis leading Greece to the top of European Championship by beating on the one hand Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia combined and the other hand beating Lithuania, Russia, Latvia, Ukraine combined!! GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!! Greece before Galis was not even average on continental level (simply put Greece was one of the weakest countries) and after him Greece was a powerhouse in European basketball. That says it all about his immense impact on the game.
