It's so fun to watch this. My grandfather, when I lived with him till I was around 6-7, used to make crowns and other dental things. Seeing someone use plaster and wax just reminds me of that time as a kid. He had a lot of machines though, like a vibrating plate to get rid of bubbles in the plaster, or these picks that would heat up to help shape the wax, along with a bunch of others to fully make the crowns and whatnot. Sometimes he would let me help him by making the plaster molds or start on the wax molds, or if I wanted to mess around he would let me use molds of ones he has already finished to "work" on. Crazy to think there are people who might have crowns in that I helped make as a kid, or I was playing with random peoples teeth molds.

@@halenurmert2036 yeah, my family member who is dental technician that makes these molds rapidly, I never seen her plaster so watery and also from what I can see she uses more material so there is more structure. In my head it makes sense, if it's mold you need, better use more material as you will waste more by risking an accurate amount and then discarding it when it fails.

As a jeweler myself, i'd say Nigel did a VERY thorough job preparing the grills post-cast, but if your wax is good enough, you shouldn't have to hone in the gaps and crowns. I recommend just using a heat gun and gently easing the wax in layer by layer. Also, to further increase the *shiny* you could apply a polishing compound on the dremel buffers (there are some specially made to polish 18k gold too).
@moki123g
@moki123g Жыл бұрын
As not a jeweler, I was thinking the same thing. It's a lot easier to smooth and work wax than metal.

I was surprised how much he nailed it right up until processing. All that work could have been prevented with a bit of care with wax and getting something other than a dremel
@oasntet
@oasntet Жыл бұрын
@@insederec Yeah, the fingerprints left in the wax had me wanting to yell 'heat gun' or 'fire' at the screen. Wax is so much easier to smooth than cast metal, do it when it is easy. Another option, used by dentists these days for implants and caps, is to skip the mold process entirely. Scan the teeth with a laser probe, get a 3d model, print the grills in resin, then do "lost resin" casting instead. Very exact results, though the dental laser scanner is not a cheap device...

I dunno, I mean I think everyone did that thing where they put an orange in their mouth and had the peel between their teeth and lips at least once. Didn't look much less comfortable than that. If he did it right which it seems he got fairly close it'd be a 1:1 match for the teeth plus the wax which in theory would fit perfectly. Labor intensive, sure. But people who do this professionally have already gone through the learning experience and could knock it out far easier. And yes, gold is expensive and silver and copper aren't exactly super cheap either albeit less expensive. I'm planning on making something large to wear as a sort of jewelry accessory but I'm not able to just pull gold out of my pockets like magic so I might be stuck settling on brass instead which I do have ;)

Not gonna lie dude, this entire video was pretty rad. I was laughing throughout and not for the reason one would think! There was a level of comedy that was done so well here, which all culminated in: "How is he going to look wearing the grillz?" The chaos that came from the revelation that Nigel likes grillz, to the plaster casting drama, to the gold sources that can only make me dub you Mr. Worldwide, was perfectly orchestrated. This was a cinematic masterpiece. I would love to see these grillz make another appearance. They honestly do look pretty neat once you get over the novelty and the hilarious absurdity of one making their own grillz. And thus, for this fantastic entertainment that made my day, please accept my thanks!

As someone that makes crowns for a living, Nile actually did a better job with the impressions than the ones we get to work from by dentists 💀 Watching his take on this whole process had me cackling

As a fellow dental lab technician, I was worried about the bubbles and some of the process, but I wholeheartedly agree. Some dentists take the wildest impressions! This was such a fun, albeit slightly surreal watch.

As a Dentist, some people work WAY too fast and just take whatever they get the first try. His first impression would have probably been fine with a little finessing later on is what pained me.

I’ve worked in Dentistry for close to 20 years….impressions are HARD. So hard in fact that I was SUPER impressed by your first try…you ALMOST had it but yes you were right about what was wrong with the first one. You got a good second one at 5:29 (nice vestibule roll) but , like you said, you wouldn’t want to see plastic. Ideally, You need a larger tray on top so your teeth aren’t close to the sides of the tray. When pouring your mold, especially with those hard catalysts mold, you’d also want to pour a base to make the casts more stable. You first pour the cast, put it on a vibrating surface to get the bubbles out, let it set a bit then pour a base and flip the cast on top of the little puddle base you made so you don’t get the breakage you got around 9:49. Taking impressions, pouring molds and making casts are definitely an art form that take time and patience to master. Dont get frustrated, everyone struggles with these…ESPECIALLY with harder mold materials.

Dental lab here, it was fascinating watching a novice do the same work. Never would have thought to use a vacuum to get bubbles out instead of vibrating it. The wax up was... interesting to say the least. The finishing job really brought it around though.
