Making bromine video: • Making a deadly chemic...
A while ago, I made all of this scary bromine in my parent's garage, and now I've decided that I want to throw some aluminum into it. This is one of my favorite reactions, and the last time that I did it, was probably over 6 years ago.
WARNING: Bromine is very toxic and corrosive, and is extremely dangerous if handled improperly.

The equation for the principal reaction is 2 Al(s ) + 3 Br2(l ) --> 2 AlBr3(s ) Some of the aluminum bromide is produced as fumes, causing the white smoke seen in the video. In addition, aluminum bromide reacts violently with water to produce HBr and aluminum hydroxide or oxide.

@@inky_mesa It's the same colour as the fumes from classic Russian hypergolic rocket motors, yes. Those usually burn some sort of hydrazine alongside a powerful oxidiser like nitrogen tetroxide or red fuming nitric acid. They leave distinctive and ominous orange clouds. Hypergolic fuels spontaneously burn on contact with each other and, while substantially less powerful and efficient than other fuels, makes up for this by being storable over long periods ready to be used and having greatly simplified engine designs, reducing cost and decreasing risk. Fuels like kerosene and hydrogen, burned under liquid oxygen, are much more powerful, but they need large, insulated tanks to stop the cryogenic hydrogen or oxygen from boiling off and complicated engine designs that can ignite the fuel and oxidiser flows and manage that combustion continously.
