Lying by omission is still lying and the easiest way to avoid conflict. Its a lot easier in the short term. I think hes been relying on that to deal with things hes not ready or able to address or express. Its also not exclusive to people with autism. Its a shame that people with autism feel they must defend themselves in the comments because of a few people on a reality tv's behavior on a show that is known for exploiting everyone.

I'm a psych major about to be in my senior year and my son has very mild autism. One of the perks of autism is that they're usually very blunt, honest, and up front. My son can't even comprehend peer pressure, he doesn't understand why anyone would do something they don't want to do just because others are doing it or to impress someone, so this doesn't really fly. They may struggle with expressing how they feel, they may shut down if they get overwhelmed, but lying is not a characteristic of autism. This is a character flaw in Niles, a flaw many people have, but the fact he's trying to excuse it by using his disorder as an excuse is really not a good sign. He lied to her every phone conversation, every time the wedding was brought up, he kept up this lie for months, this isn't "oh I forgot to tell you" this was a planned lie and manipulation.

Hey, fellow autistic here! To answer your question: no, I don't think the knowing or not if we lied it's an autistic thing. Idk if he's telling the truth about actually not knowing it, but it's not something every autistic person struggles with But I do think avoiding conflict at all costs might be and the lying is tied to that My answer is based on experience and what I heard from other autistic people, I don't have the cientific knowledge on that!!!
@KrisIsk4 күн бұрын
I am autistic and also work with autistic adults. Your comment is actually the most accurate I seeen here and that includes from other autistic people attacking him. I cant say what his intentions are but his reaction is common with autistic adults. Typical avoiding conflicts due to trauma from childhood where being blamed for everything makes you do that. It can be a trauma response or mild shutdown of him feeling he is losing control. Maybe he did say something like this a while ago but later talk made matilda forget and he did not bring it up again (conflict avoidance). But having said it once ages ago can feel like it is still that statement is still "active" since he never contradicted it in his mind even though overall picture Matilda and outsiders dont see it that way. Ofc cant be certain since it is from a show famous for creating drama, but it seems to me more he have a autistic trauma response based on conflict avoidance and not on purpose lying or manipulating.
@RaicazzКүн бұрын
@KrisIsk yes!!! I'm seeing other people here in the comments saying autistic people actually struggle with lying, but that's not my experience at all! People normally based their opinions about autistic people on folks that got diagnosed earlier in life, and that experience is so hugely different from us that got diagnosed as adults. I feel like autistic adults with later diagnoses are actually huge "truth benders" more than straight up fully on telling lies, but that is still lying

I've been recently diagnosed with mild Autism. In Niles case I think him blaming his Autism for him just straight up lying is an excuse. But I do understand the reasoning behind it, the gaslighting tho that was just shitty to do. He does take ownership in the end tho, which is good. I understand Niles not wanting to be blunt, because it really REALLY can hurt the people you care about, especially having less of an "expressionate" face, it can come across as really cold or mean. That really is an issue with having Autism, that's the whole point of struggling with communication, like you said yourself in the video. I think a lot of Neurotypicals don't understand the impact that can have on people around you as an autistic person.

Hi. I got autism diagnosis and there are 3 things I know when it comes to lies and truth (both from.personal and professional) Some autistic people doesn't see the reason for lies.so they are blunt. Brutal honesty Some autistic people doesn't want the hard truth that will hurt other people or rather they don't want to face consequences related to heavy emotional situations, these ones including myself are expert at lying. They know what is the truth and what is lies and they research and avoid until revelation. They prepare and doomsday, lies so it will sound believable until someone else catches them. Third There are some autistic people that express things but not even close enough for other people to read them between the lines. They are often sure they give signs. But really rjey dont However what he is doing here is straight up lies. He knew what to lie about and how to avoid the topic until impact. Which ironically was a producer.

Where is Matilda's family? Im wondering how traditional her family is? Niles hasn't done any of the traditional things involved in getting engaged in her culture and getting her parents approval. Theyve mentioned that they both have prior sexual experiences with others and they're staying in a hotel together. How is this possibly okay with her parents? I would think that the things shared on this show are not things a parent would want to hear. I think that her family would have kept some of this stupid waffling back and forth with Niles in check if they had the chance to ask him what his intentions with their daughter were in the first place. Especially with the door knock ceremony.

Not trying to give Niles any excuses for lying, however, I can attest that i too have struggled my whole life with healthy communication and interpersonal relationships. I’m in my 40s now. Just been becoming more self aware over the last few years and finally learning how to process and react to conflict and social situations in a healthier way. In the past I’ve felt much stress in how I’ve dealt with these situations. If I really liked someone I would withhold crucial information from them in the mindset that I didn’t want to ‘hurt their feelings’. I can’t tell u how destructive and self sabotaging this is. I have a personal life coach now who is helping me be more intentional and encourage me to always be accountable and maintain healthy patterns. Remember Niles, the best way we can honor our feelings and respect other’s feelings as well is to be honest with them always. Good luck everyone!

he has clear insecurities & was worried she'd out right reject him if he was upfront, & that stems from him not being completely sure of her love for him, I think as most Americans, he is approaching this issue from a 'what if she's only with me for the green card/money' perspective, which is whats setting alarm bells off in his head (unfounded or not) cos whenever he speaks about getting married I have yet to see a single tingle of excitement, its always with a sense of dread as if he's forcing himself to do something outside of his character, in reality he's more comfortable with getting to know her more than being impulsive, which begs the question then whyyy for the love of all that is good would he chose this show, its literally in the name! He's clearly confused and torn between making her happy and staying true to himself in how he truly wants to handle this situation and so that results in him flip-flopping with his intentions while trying to suss out her intentions, unfortunately he doesn't realise that creating trust issues is more damaging and destabilising in their relationship more than the simple postponement of a wedding. They need to both be of one mind, open and honest about the plans and their intentions or the marriage itself when it finally happens will be a disaster, because if he keeps this up he will constantly be making promises he can't keep and she will keep getting her hopes up then dropped due because of his inability to be upfront.
@bijoux38674 күн бұрын
Niles DID tell her once via phone call that he wanted to postpone the wedding. She insisted, during that conversation, that they proceed with the wedding. Where Niles failed was the fact that he did not firmly make his decision clear and final after she insisted during that conversation. He allowed way too much time to pass before making his decision clear.

lol this producer needs to be the producer covering all of the couples. TLC loves messiness so she was probably fired after live fact checking/pushing accountability.

Have they forgotten he is a vulnerable person, a person with a disability? He has NEVER been in a serious adult relationship under this type of pressure. Talk about exploiting someone who is vulnerable. Shame on the producers of this show.

His disability has nothing to do with gaslighting and misleading Matilda. Autism doesn’t cause dishonesty. Iles chose to be on the show. No one is exploiting him

It’s simple. If you don’t want to get married don’t ask anyone to marry you then.

Autism come with major social dysfunctions. It doesn't mean just being nerdy and always honest (Sheldon type behavior). I survived severe psychological and verbal abuse by an autistic man. He was able to tell himself lies to make himself look better and actually started and continued to believe the lies he made up. I think there is a correlation. Surely not with every autistic person. But probably Niles will always find ways in his head to make himself a victim and apologize his own wrong doings. If I would be able to speak to Matilda, I would sure tell her to leave, or better, run! They also don't fit together on so many other levels.

I have autism and we absolutely do know what is and is not a lie, in fact, myself and most of the people I have met in groups all have a very intense sense of right, and wrong, and wanting justice! He did it out of fear, and it seems he is very ashamed of that (as he very well should be).

Gaslighting is a colloquialism, defined as manipulating someone into questioning their own perception of reality. The expression, which derives from the title of the 1944 film Gaslight, became popular in the mid-2010s. Merriam-Webster cites deception of one's memory, perception of reality, or mental stability. Not a psych, but I do know it's linked to BPD!

I’m surprised to see Niles my ex on 90 day fiancé (we dated back in 2018), I will not disclose what happened between me and him out of respect for the both of us, but I will say this. I pray that they work things out, but he should not have led Matilda on. I’m getting married soon to my fiancé and we’re so pumped! However back to this, I don’t agree with him just letting her think all this time about them getting married soon.
