Algae cakes were a health snack made by Ernest Philpott during the 1931 Hill Valley Science Expo. True, it was seen as a cosmetic product, though it was mostly radioactive compounds such as Radium that were used in this, which compared to Plutonium is not that bad, though the countless cases of cancer linked to the radioactive mania that was present in the 20s and 30s is huge! but compounds like Plutonium were seen as dangerous even in the 1920s and 30s and therefore not used in paint and water supplies as well as face cream!
