I'm 62 and have been playing guitar off and on since my teens. I'm humble about what I can and cannot play. Mostly, can't play. However, since watching guitarist on KZbin for years now, I'm so impressed by the caliber of talent in the young players today. I realize that tab and online lessons (which did not exist when I was in my 20's and 30's) help players these days, but I still think the talent, dedication and determination are the primary drivers of there players. NiliBrosh, you are such a good player. A joy to watch. Your focus, tone, speed....all of it make this cover something Eric himself would love watching. Bravo!!!!

It’s interesting to see she doesn’t play many of these licks in the traditional shapes and positions. Suuuuper clean and and in time as well.
@dr.bunterhidenbrobruh55022 жыл бұрын
Well, neither does Eric Johnson. 🙃
@trentmckenzie3432 жыл бұрын
@@dr.bunterhidenbrobruh5502 You’re right, but typically everybody tries to play the licks exactly like Eric did. For example, the galloping lick she plays in the Em pentatonic position instead of part of the G major scale. That’s more what I was pointing out, she plays them differently than everyone trying to copy Eric.
@dr.bunterhidenbrobruh55022 жыл бұрын
@@trentmckenzie343 My point is, regardless of whether you play the licks in the exact fret positions as EJ or not, he often used "unusual" fingerings and didn't always play within the typical "boxes/shapes" because he had such an incredible stretch/span, which gave him more options and flexibility to stretch across the fretboard and play patterns that would be very uncomfortable to someone like myself who can't palm a basketball, lol. Not sure which part you're referring to with the "galloping lick" because I think of a gallop as a repeated eighth/sixteenth note pattern with a straight feel (think Iron Maiden bass lines) whereas this is mostly in a swing eighth/triplet feel. Also (regardless of fingering) this should not be thought of as being played in Em, but rather G major - with the exception of course of the intro, before the song really starts, which I do think of as Em pentatonic(ish). Assuming what you meant by this is the pentatonic mode ("box/pattern") located from open to the 3rd fret (or 12th to 15th), but again I'm not sure the exact part you're referring to.
@trentmckenzie3432 жыл бұрын
@@dr.bunterhidenbrobruh5502 Towards the end of the intro there’s an ascending/descending lick that’s got a gallop-type phrasing and utilizes string skipping. Eric plays it starting on the root note on fret 15 of the high E, and plays the 17th and 19th of the B, G, and D. It’s just before the last quick G major pentatonic run in the intro. She plays that lick in the E minor position of 12-15, which typically nobody does. But you are absolutely correct, he has insane span, as is evident in his live performance at Austin(?). The chords he plays are insanely difficult.
@dr.bunterhidenbrobruh55022 жыл бұрын
@@trentmckenzie343 Yeah the intro is obviously played in a different feel from the rest of the song and rooted more in Em until the last section right before the pedal riff where the song really "starts", which is based in G (relative keys but still important to note the difference). I think I know the exact part you're talking about now. It's the ending of the final ascending major run and he climbs up to that "pedal" riff where he pedals the high G (15 on high E string) with the other notes you mentioned in between and repeats it a few times before the final descending run. Yes I noticed that was definitely a different way than I've played it before or seen anyone else play it, lol. Pretty interesting though. Hey, whatever works, as long as you get the right notes, right? That's the beauty of the guitar, we have the luxury of being able to play the same notes in different places so we have some choice in our fingerings which can provide some comfort. There are many riffs I play differently than the original artist, sometimes to the point where I criticize their fingerings - like WHY TF would you play it THAT way? Lol. I once read it's best to always use the fingering that's most comfortable and that you can make sound the best. The slight difference in tone will be the least of your worries. It's better than making a mistake trying to pull it off the "real" way. In the end all that will matter is how you can make it sound.

Nili is one of the best out there. I hope others will give her more promotion. We do! Whomever gave her a thumbs down really needs their head examined.

Fantastic playing.....but is it me or does the video seem sped up. I CANNOT play this song and am I envious of her playing...YES ABSOLUTELY but it appears sped up. The way her hair and jewelry swing back and forth and her picking and fretting finger movements have a sped up jerkiness to me. I watched Eric Johnson’s live video and Rick Graham’s cover and the video seems more “natural”. If you set the video at 75% all the above movements appear more natural to my eyes. If I’m wrong.....my sincerest apology.
@AllThatShreds4 жыл бұрын
Charles Armani Dude I can assure you Nili doesn’t do any stuff like that. She’s the real deal!
@charlesarmani68974 жыл бұрын
Andrew Catania Ok...I’ll take your word for it. Maybe the lighting affects the video. The video just looks suspect to me....but I’d be happy if I was able to play that song at 1/4 her speed.
@AllThatShreds4 жыл бұрын
Charles Armani I’ve covered Nili for five years and she’s an exceptional guitarist. Look at her other videos and you’ll see she doesn’t speed up stuff.

Excellent performance. What separates a good vs great cover of this song is timing and groove. You slayed both. Loved it.

I have watched this a few times over the last year or so. I can say after 40 yrs of playing I am blown away it warms the heart that players are kicking arse and taking names. What an amazing job kuddos to you!!
@kevinseventeen30994 жыл бұрын
What I loved about Eric's version was his cleaner tone, but I always felt he was pushing one note after the other. The slightly more overdriven/reverbed tone aside, you've really brought the much-needed feel - and on a YT video, no less! Keep on keeping on!
@mikesteelheart4 жыл бұрын
I think her tone is still pretty organic, a bit more 80's shred than the original but still bluesy.

Just simply outstanding, everything you did about his cover... Question, how long did you have to warm up before you nailed doing this video in just one take, so flawlessly? You are a Guitar Goddess!

If one doesn’t necessarily remember all the notes, there are musical devices that help; including sound relation. Eric himself just probably was jamming on a couple of phrases and found the relative pivots.
