I’ve cracked it ! Hooray! This is why we teach both sexes at our school ( Waldorf ) to knit because it trains the mind to think . Knitting is a simple process which forms the basis for solving patterns and techniques and lays the foundation for engineering. We teach boys as well to sew ,weave , work with wood and metal not only for practical and creative reasons but to develop their thinking .You demonstrate this quality in your work , fabulous Norman!

I so enjoy your tutorials, with all your attention to detail and all the nuance you add with your closing remarks. I'm an experienced crocheter who has just learned how to knit, so I get easily frustrated because I went from creating near-perfect garments in one craft to creating wonky stuff full of ladders in another. Knitting is so much harder! Also, the first project I chose was an overknee stocking from a pattern with ribbing and cables in magic loop. I didn't actually realise how advanced that was, I just went for it because I fancied the finished product and could not find anything like it for sale, nor was that possible in crochet! On top of that, I picked a fuzzy and splitty yarn in a dark colour, because the challenge was not big enough yet ... I've finished one stocking before I thought to go to KZbin for tips, and it is ... well ... full of character ;-) Now that I have watched your tutorials and knit a few swatches, I will start from scratch. Literally! Not only has my knitting become a LOT neater thanks to your tips, my gauge has also changed because now that I pay so much attention to those little details, I knit much more tightly. Oops! Anyway, I'm sure my second stocking will be a lot nicer. So thanks for everything you do, you are my knitting hero!!

Sabrina, I had a good laugh reading your post. After a lifetime of knitting, I still churn out pieces which, at best, can be kindly called "full of character". As I press on with bloody-minded determination to conquer the magic loop, I shall be relying on more NimbleNeedles videos. Have checked out a few but like these ones best.

I find Magic Loop perfect for the way I knit socks. I prefer starting at the toe, using Judy's Magic Cast On, with a German short row heel. Magic Loop keeps the heel stitches naturally separate from the instep stitches, so after I finish the toe, I put in my stitch markers for the heel; that way, they're already in place (this also shows where the round begins). I use a 26" circular needle for the sock, which sounds excessive, but it allows you to easily try on the sock as you're knitting it; a 9" or 16" needle will not allow you to do this easily, if at all. I hope this helps.

I’m an old knitter 70 years of it. Always use dpns . So my hands were “pleines de pouces “. As we say in Canada. Clumsy; so I changed to circular needles for large projects like sweaters. Norman....you are the best. I love your videos. I started knitting 2 yrs ago after I retired and joined a monthly knitting group that sent projects via mail. I joined this one because they were local to me and offered classes in store. After the first month...the world wide C happened and all in person everything stopped. Once things reopened this store decided to remain online only. I live in North Idaho which is a great place but we barely have a Joanne's and Walmart. So I have had one in person class. The club does put out videos on the projects but they rarely explain the stitches well. This month is knitting fingerless mittens with the first three rows k1, p1. I just could not get the gap (ladder) to go away. I thought one had to keep the switch in the same spot all the time. Now I know better. Enough rambling....I have learned so much from your videos. Thanks for all theses tricks to avoid side ladders. I sure will try pulling on the second stitch (rather than the first) to thighten my work. Traveling loop is also quite useful when you only have a short cable.

I lived four years in Aschaffenburg and in Wurzburg when my husband was stationed in Germany in the mid-1970s. What a beautiful country Germany is! My mother taught me how to sew, embroider, and crochet in the 1950s. I can't imagine how many garments I would have made since then if my mother taught me knitting as well. I am a little confused. I know that you have to join the round if you're using circular needles the regular way, but I thought that you didn't have to do it if you use the magic loop method. So I have been knitting top-down hats without joining the first stitches, and they seem to work just fine. Now I'm curious whether there are situations (like a sleeve or sock) where joining is required to hold the project together, even with the magic loop?

as a rule of thumb, the needle on your left is always just a "stitch holder". You already formed those stitches in the previous round.

Dear Norman - I just want to thank you for all your videos. I am 80 now and have been knitting since I was a child. Just wish you had been around when I started. I have downloaded your sock pattern but not started yet - got to do the measuring process first! Will let u know how that goes - I will be following your video. You make it very interesting. I’ve even just about converted to the Continental method from the English method. Sewing up was always the worst so there have been a lot of unfinished garments over the years - now I’m starting to work in the round - magic loop - and hoping to eliminate sewing up. I'm using g circular needles, but I do have double pointed as well. I’m so glad to have the extra tips on ladders. I knitted 3 pairs of socks, toe up TAAT, and ended up with ladders on the very last one because I was pulling the first 2 stitches so tight that the last loop on the cable was shortened. I see the mistake now and since I’m a tight knitter, I’m just trying to keep my tension even and my cable stitches close! It helps so much to watch your videos and you are my absolute favorite! I knit using traveling loop which I prefer because I don’t rearrange half way through a row. I did not know about slipping and passing over the first stitch. I’m going to try that out! Thanks!

For mittens, I would generally say dpns are actually easier - especially for the thumb and the very tip. So, I'd say you are good. Andd you know...pratice and patience.. :)

If I could "like" this video twice I would. I wanted to try the magic loop but after watching the tricks for not making ladders (again) I realized I wasn't paying attention to my last stitches on the needle enough and it was causing the ladder as opposed to the first stitches where I was being very careful.........I'm back to my four double pointed needles with success! Thank you!

Glad it was helpful! and remember, you can also try double pointed knittng needles. I personally rarely knit magic loop. i find it too fiddly and anoying while dpns are so simple and easy.

@@NimbleNeedles Yes, I feel more comfortable with dpns…. But thought I’d give the magic loop another try. I had to laugh when I read you prefer dpns, too!! You make the magic loop look easy. Im starting a sweater project with a small neck and the pattern recommends magic loop. I’ll give it a try!

@@rebecca-72 you could also go for super small diameter circulars. though I personally cannot handle the small needle tips very well. but for stockinette stitch or ribbing its okay.
