As an "evil monster" she simply can't try to act nice and stuff as you saw from her backstory. If she wanted to actually murder people she would've done sooo much more damage besides the castle she knew how the institution really is and stuff too. Also I just want to say she probably try to be more evilish at first because she thought ballister was trying to be kinda evil too (Thats more of what I think though on that part) One more thing she is more then anything to me gender fluid rep but she fits trans too it shows that trans people are not perfect people and dont try to be but they are not bad either and was always just trying to be themselves
