To be honest I don't think it was a misunderstanding. I'd rather call it a mistake. These adults have never experienced something like that before and their fear was a pretty natural reaction - people usually fear what they don't know. Their mistake was that they refused to learn/acknowlegde that Nimona is not a threat. They just saw what they haven't seen before, got scared but instead of learning about the strange, powerful creature, they turned to fear. Which then burned for 1000 years and eventually became the hate that we can see in Director's actions. That fear from 1000 years ago started her hate. None of them wanted to broaden their horizons. Does my rant even make any sense? I am sorry, I'm just overly excited by this masterpiece 😭

This is one of the rare times I've seen such authentic queer rep. Not just surface level. It's great that Ballister and Ambrosius are a couple that explicitly state their love for each other but there's a lot more queer things about this movie. This is why we need more queer creators creating queer content. The creator is trans and put his years of his feelings and experience in the original comic. There's so many queer allegories i appreciate. -like bal asking Nimona what she is and she says "I'm Nimona!" That's it. We don't need back stories. Like in real life, we don't need to know trans and nonbinary ppl backstories or surgeries. We like the person now, that's all that matters -the mix of futuristic and historical elements reflects now. We made so much progress now, yet there are ppl who enforce "standards" that go back thousands of years ago. -bal is a token minority. Instead of the system being accepting of less fortunate ppl, they have the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." -bal an outsider, is telling nimona (another outsider) to just socially conform like he does. This reflects infighting in the LGBTQ community. -the whole "they are trained to kill me yet I'M the monster?" Can reflect how some religious ppl treat queer ppl. We're literally loving others, expressing ourselves, yet some ppl are saying how we deserve to die, we're going to hell. And we often get hate crimed.etc. yet WE'RE in the wrong? Thats just a few examples but I love this movie so much. I'm glad kids have this rep.

The queer representation in this is so good because it's a prominent part of the story, but it's not bashed over our heads and treated like a huge shock. A lot of us are at the point where we don't need something like this to be a huge thing; it's played nonchalantly like any other relationship and I love that. Nimona is also a really fun character and is probably just me in animated form: punk rock aesthetic, plus size body, chaotic neutral, sometimes dark sense of humor, and an animal person😆😉. Her story of being seen as different and/or dangerous by the rest of the world strikes a chord with me as a queer woman on the autism spectrum. Also, f**k Todd (the redhead knight)!! All my homies hate Todd!

The representation of this movie is so on point, especially with how Nimona describes the “not shapeshifting” feeling, or what I think is dysphoria. I personally describe my own as an itchy sweater feeling, one I can’t quite get rid of unless I “shift” (look/feel like my gender, and that’s a pretty loose term lol) and the whole “so you’re a girl? Or a rhino?” “I’m Nimona” I’m very much the same, no specific gender label, just, me. This is exactly the movie we need right now

I went into this movie completely blind; I had never heard of it. Saw it as a top 10 on my netflix and figured "why not ... I could use some animation" .... ooooooh it WRECKED me. Nimona doesn't have a "true form" that's why she keeps saying "I'm Nimona" when someone asks who or what are you. Something I didn't see others mention; during the "Kwispy" scene when the car is rolling towards the kid, there is a KNIGHT that PUSHES the kid out of the way to save himself. This just makes it so much "ooomph". And she very well could have toasted everyone ... but it was non-lethal cereal puffs lol She never actually murders anyone despite always saying "murdering" and "killing". And when she's yelling at Ballister to call her a monster - his response was pure reflex trained into him - and he realized it right before Todd bursts in (butt face).

I have no idea if anyone realised that the main gay couple (Bal & Ambrosius) actually serves other, very interesting meaning (?). It's obviously representative (and we adore them for it!) but I thought... what if this was a dude. With a girl. I know some people would argue about some weird stuff, like one of the characters being 'weaker' (because, you know, it'd be a woman-) or some other stupid things. These people would go on a rant about how the creators 'please' women by showing a girl winning over a dude- or the other way around- they'd say that the girl is 'always loosing" (I hope this makes sense). I think the fact that they are both men is actually very smart because that makes Ballister and Ambrosius EQUAL. No one will say that the creators made one character 'stronger' or 'weaker' because these characters are equal. Even if this is not the case I honestly love that.

The was I personally interpreted this movie is that nemona is genderfluid and regularly fluctuates between genders excluding female. When bal says “and now you’re a boy” nemona responds “I am today” implying that they can be different genders daily. But whenever bal tells them to be a girl, they respond with “I’m not a girl, I’m nemona” implying that feminine pronouns are not preferable to them. They also never refer to themself as a girl. I just found that interesting and I feel like nobody really talks about that element of nemona’s character.
