Many people trash the movie because the director’s plot twist was “predictable” but the point of the movie was not the good guys vs a single bad guy. The “bad guy” were the bigoted and intolerant ideas that we as a society often display.

@@Atlas_Redux I'm genuinely baffled by how incorrect everything you said is. There's two types of films often called predictable. If you watch the trailer and you can guess every single story beat before you actually sit down and watch the movie, because the story does nothing original and has nothing to say that hasn't been said by thousands of stories before, that's predictable, and by definition it often creates a bad and boring movie. But if you sit down to watch the movie and you can knit together the hints long before they are literally spelled out for the part of the audience who is still catching up, but they are genuine messages and plot developments that you did not expect at the beginning of the film, then it's not predictable, it's just you understanding the hints that the writers have to put in the story so that the story makes sense. 90% of good movies are just clear storytelling, and you being clever enough to put two and two together before the teacher tells you it's four. You're not predicting anything, it's not predictable. Nimona isn't "almost every Disney 3D animated- and Pixar animated movie", it's almost the exact opposite. Have they ever done a story with explicit queer main couple who fight on two sides of the same battle, while at the same time obviously still loving each other? When have they ever done a story about "a culture of fear keeps us in the dark medieval ages no matter how advanced our technology becomes"? When was there ever a movie where a main protagonist with she/her pronouns gets to say she's not a girl at two points in the film, and genuinely mean it, because her identity based on the concept of change and fluidity. Disney/Pixar wouldn't touch Nimona's suicidal ideation with a 10ft pole. I could keep going. There's a reason why Disney didn't want this movie made in the first place: This story goes against their guidelines of what stories they want to tell.
@osanneart9318 Жыл бұрын
@@Atlas_Redux 1) I'm not a kid, I'm literally your peer in education level. 2) your money doesnt impress me, nor does it seem relevant. 3) you seem to be thinking of the 36 dramatic situations, which is not what makes a complete story. 4) Nimona (the film at least) is a 4 act structure. Set-up, response, attack, resolution, But also two three act structures woven together (Nimona's set-up is woven into ballisters Confrontation, both come to a conclusion at the same time). This is because, in order to map to Frozen 1-to-1 you need to ignore the title character. At no point does Elsa actually have to step in and learn the lesson that she too was causing someone to be exiled, and stop that person from destroying the kingdom or something. This is why the queerness is so important to Nimona's plot, Ballister was an outsider, but he was an insider too: his way of being other was allowed to exist. He was a gay commoner in a relationship with a noble and he was accepted into knighthood, personally selected by the queen and applauded by thousands for it. It is contrasted with Nimona's plot, who got the opposite treatment, and even after being exiled, Ballister still had to unlearn that way of thinking. Those are all plot beats that are important to the plot of the Title character, that you seem to happily ignore, to try and make a point. 5) if you're tired of having the discussion year after year, maybe you shouldn't start it. maybe you should realize (as a media study bachelor) that nuances matter, and that that is usually why we tell stories in the first place. Pointing out how many acts a story has never been why a story is more or less predictable, in fact (as you probably know) theater used to mention the amount of acts in their advertisements for centuries. they were still surprising the audience with the plot twists, though! Acts are WHEN something tends to happen, story predictability is about WHAT happens and WHY and HOW. You missed both, because you dismissed the actual story as flavor, while looking at the structure as if it was the story. next you'll tell me that detective stories are predictable because the reveal is at the end, even when you didn't actually know who the killer was.

Nimona being a representation of gender fluidity and trans identifying was great because it addressed it in a way that’s easy to understand and nuanced. The film also gave us a gay leading character that has his struggles with being an ally to Nimona with some micro-aggressions of “can’t you be normal” or “it would be easier for you to be a girl.” Even the LGBTQIA+ community isn’t perfect. I’m happy how they resolved intolerance and learning to be accepting of others’ differences. Another great animated feature in 2023. This entire movie was an allegory on gender non-conformity. When asked what they are, they said "I'm Nimona". When Bal said he'd prefer Nimona as a girl, they said "I'm not a girl, I'm a shark!" The one part where Nimona turned into a little boy and Bal was like "and now you're a boy" Nimona said "I am today." When Bal asked what it feels like to change, Nimona basically said first they're uncomfortable, but "then I change, and I'm free". Looking at the movie again through this lens really puts Nimona's entire character and the conflict they both face into perspective. The world rejected what Nimona was, and the movie followed Bal learning to accept them.

Omg this makes total sense, I 100% agree with you. Honestly I would have never seen it this way if not for seeing your comment. I honestly just enjoyed the movie as a whole from visuals to the storyline, but the way you explained it was amazing! I go by the pronouns she/her and identify as female so maybe that's why I didn't catch on. Now I really see why this movie connects with a wide range of people. Everyone should be seen as who they are and want to be, not forced into a singular category because society deems it as 'normal', and more people should learn to accept and appreciate those who are proud to be themselves. I feel as if this movie is definitely directed at all audiences young, adult or old, everyone should watch this because it is a great lesson in which people should follow to make the world a better place 🙂

Fun Facts! This movie originally started out as a webcomic on Tumblr by ND Stevenson. The first 3 pages of the comic were done when he was in a college, as a homework assignment, but soon turned into a full on webcomic. The webcomic ran from 2012-2014, and was published as a graphic novel the next year in 2015. Later that same year, it was announced that Fox had acquired the rights to make it into a movie (yes, in 2015!). Of course, with Disney buying Fox, the merger, the shutting down of the movie's home, Blue Sky studios, and the ultimate cancellation, the fact that we finally got this movie, this many years later, is incredible.

“She didn’t need that much convincing”. I’m guessing you’re a kid, and that’s why you think that way. But in reality, kids like you listen to their parents. It’s only when they reach puberty and become teens that they start to rebel and question authority and their parents. And this continues into adulthood. Ballister changed cus he unlearned what ppl taught him, but Gloreth never did cuz her parents told her she was wrong and children don’t have fully functioning brains (your brain reaches maturity at the age of 25). Children always believe their parents are right, cuz they’re fully aware of their own ignorance, even if it means learning how to hate and fear from their parents. Gloreth was just a child, like Nimona. When told you’re wrong, it’s easier for a child to assume they’re in the wrong and blame themselves for it. She probably even blamed herself for bringing the “monster” to the village. Nimona also blamed herself. If anything, this is a movie for you to also self reflect on what your parents taught you. Cuz you can say Gloreth was wrong but that’s cuz you know better due to your circumstances. Gloreth existed in the wrong one. We are all Gloreth, and instead of blaming her we need to look at our own failures so we don’t do what she did. Just like she scapegoated Nimona, in a way, you’re scapegoating her too.

I think Gloreth changed her tune not only due to her parents, but when she saw Nimona defending herself. Once she saw Nimona was capable of violence, even in self-defence, it was enough to tip her over the edge.

The FIRST way I personally heard of this movie was when Nickflix did his reaction (I check both his and Cody's channels periodically!). And it was actually Nickflix's thumbnail of it that got my attention because... Ever since I felt the feel-good brain endorphins that came come along with tears (during my first viewing of "inside Out") I've been a tearjerker-seeker. My hopes for this movie having that effect on me originally weren't all that high (I had discovered it's relatively rare for a movie to make me cry), but THIS one did it, and even more surprising, multiple times, pretty much every time I watched it (OR a reaction).

@sathvamp1 Жыл бұрын
I also got that urge, and I can say during my own first watch of this, I was about as emotional as Cody with this one. But what really surprised me was... this is about the 6th time (I'm starting to lose track!) that I've either watched this myself on my own, a reaction to it, or done something like merely read a comment quoting Nimona's most heartbreaking line, but I can now definitely say: This is apparently my FIRST "repeater tearjerker" that will "get me" every single time. Ever since I felt the feel-good brain endorphins that came come along with tears (during my first viewing of "inside Out") I've been a tearjerker-seeker... but back then, I soon (frustratingly) discovered that (until now), it had been virtually impossible for me to cry to a RE-watch of ANYthing. Even "The Land Before Time," "Interstellar", and "My Girl" were "one-hit-wonders" for me... I don't really know why THIS one does it every single time. Maybe it has something to do with the wonderful mysteriousness of an innocent shapeshifter creature, among other potential reasons.

Such a beautiful to outstanding movie reaction from you Cody as it broken me when you cry at the most touching scenes. 😭 As this movie seem to show some interesting story that the one who created this movie was based on the graphic novel when the artist/creator was dealing with the issue of transitioning when they became from a female to a male. As you might say that this movie also shows the way of people who are “GenderFluid” that have a hard time on who they are and showing who they are supposed to be. So glad this movie exists to branch out more Pride fans to watch and appreciate on who they are or suppose to be. May it still live on and I hope the artist make a huge series with this movie to branch more story telling. 😌

There was one thing about the movie I never fully got. When Nimona shifts into animals, the animal is a shade of pink/red (I don't know the name for this color. I do like it though) but when she shifts to Bal, Ambrosius or the demon baby, Nimona doesn't have the pink/red color( aside from a lock of hair when posing as Bal). Can Nimona control how accurate the shifting is and only chooses to be pink/red? Because that makes sense. Nimona only turns into the humans I mentioned when there is a need to trick someone (and even then Nimona is still Nimona), but there isn't a need to be deceptive when shifting into the animals. They colors could match the animal, be pink/red, or pokedots and it wouldn't change anything and that lock of hair from being Bal could be one of the ways Nimona screws with him.

25:53 is the line in the movie that left me shook because this is a personal issue in today world that must be fixed. Off topic, so I don’t mind conservative people and all cuz I get it on some levels. But that belief of anyone not fitting your certain standards in a book is something that I don’t get in some levels. That’s what I got from the director in this film. Her sticking with the same traditions and it turned her into a evil monster. But with this case, she was willing to kill half the city just she doesn’t want people to believe Gloreth made a mistake. And the LGBT representation in this is fantastic, I personally can relate on some levels to Nimona so this was a phenomenal movie. Great reaction.

I remember watching this and being very confused. I loved the clash of modern technology and medieval philosophies like nobility and knighthood. But Nimona's character initially confused me leading me to believe maybe they had a point in calling her a monster given her tendency to violence and drawings of murder. After a rewatch and some discussion with a friend I realized this movie provides an excellent allegory to LGBT+ persecution and how our misguided beliefs of "weird is bad" are wrong. Thus, leading me to realize how I too act like the knights in fearing of new things and ideas. So, I would like to extend an apology to both Nimona and all those apart of the LGBT+ community for being fearful and ignorant of you. Also, a big thank you to you Cody for helping me realize how wrong I was about LGBT+ people.

The comic that it was based on was written by a trans person about his experience… The trans flag APPEARED in the movie during Nimona’s monologue about shapeshifting. We’re not grasping at straws. This movie is about the evils of intolerance, upholding the status quo, etc. How hate is taught, not born. It’s not subtext. It’s literally the text. Let the trans community have this one. Stop being a hater.
