I forgot to mention that A Poke in the Ear Vol 2 also has some sounds from Silent Hill as well. In fact, the very next sample "Circular3" is used in "Don't Cry" from the Silent Hill 1 OST (albeit slowed down heavily). Also, I forgot to put down the filepath for the bass sample in the video so here it is: "Melodic\Synths\Radiation Synth\Beta Waves\circular2.aif"
@samharvey71642 жыл бұрын
Just spotted another sample from Poke 2 in Closer - Ambient Textures/noise/resurgence.aiff is used for the noisey pad melody that starts at 1:47 (more prominent around 3:03) There are bound to be others. Thanks for the great video!

I’ve been programming patches for decades, deconstructed tons of stuff and made commercial sample disks. This one sound always vexed me. You can hear the close slap back delay, a low saw/tri horn like bass tone, and that funky wah filter overtone. But I could never match it’s distinctly perverted sound. It does not sound like a generic patch so that’s quite a surprise and a great find. Wonder if Trent even knows about this (many in the band were tasked with sample/patch creation leading to TDS)

Holy shit dude, this is MASSIVELY helpful. We need more channels doing this sort of stuff. Frank Klepacki would probably just tell people what samples he used for command and conquer, but most of the other soundtracks that spiced up my childhood so much are so obscure by this point they're effectively lost to time in terms of how they were made and performed. There's an enormous wealth of creative potential by just knowing what libraries to look for and you're doing the internet and music a huge service, thank you, more of these videos please!

This is some tremendous sample archeology. SynaMax, I appreciate your Synth Sherlock work and look forward to future episodes. A lot of these 80s/90s-era CD-ROMs and whatnot have been forgotten in the mists of times, so I'm glad you're raising awareness that they exist and have veritable sonic gems still relevant to the present day!

I wonder if the source for Circular is a Moog Model D as I recreated the sound recently and it was 99% there and added a touch of delay. Great work! Any ideas on where this library can be found?

I know this is an old comment, but I'm glad I came across it. Recently I've been trying to recreate some sounds I've always loved and/or grew up with. That's definitely one of 'em. There are a lot of videos on Trent's sound, but none describing what he used for this exact part. If I find anything I'll report back. If you know anything and you're still out there, please share!

Well I have a contribution. That weird sounding creepy piano at the end of the song is from a DX7 IID. I had one of these circa 2005, and tried out many sounds from the internet... only thing is I can't remember if this was a preset on the synth, from a cart or a downloaded patchbank (there are 1000sof DX7 patches on the internet)
@SuperTed64127 күн бұрын
I'll contest this to state the its actually piano recording from a Mellotron, Trent got access to a Mellotron at that time, specifically the same one used on strawberry fields forever, if you pitch down the piano sound on a Mellotron it sounds just right.
@lundsweden27 күн бұрын
@@SuperTed641 Nah, I actually found this patch for the DX7 recently. If I remember correctly, it was for the DX7II and was called Britepiano or something. It is 100% the same sound.

Thank you so much for posting this! I downloaded the sample pack and it sounds IDENTICAL to the Closer bass patch. Also, I noticed that the files in the sample pack were "last modified" (i.e. published) on 25th March 1992 at 11:25am, which would be consistent with the samples being available in some form during the timeline for the production of TDS.

I’m far from convinced on your timeline as “the downward spiral” was released on May 30, 1994 meaning the song was in development prior to the release of “circular 2” on poke in the ear. Sounds more like it was named after the patch from the downward “spiral”, Sherlock. It’s not that hard to just patch it on a Moog homie.

Out of curiosity (and because I want to nail my cover of Closer) I downloaded the Poke in the Ear 2 sample pack. The circular 2 patch does indeed sound identical to Closer with zero additional processing (just drop into Logic's sampler and play along - I can share when I have finished my cover version). According to my Mac's "Finder" app, the files in the sample pack were last modified on 25th March 1992 at 11:25am, so they were indeed created BEFORE the release date of TDS.
