For foreigners that might be confused, "verlan" is the name of a dialect where words have reversed pronunciation of their syllables (for example "verlan" reversed gives "lan ver" > "''(à) l'envers" meaning literally "reversed" in french). Merci (thanks) becomes "cimer" Femme (woman) becomes "meuf" Louche (suspicious) becomes "chelou" As for the origins of verlan, the french language have been toyed with for ages and verlan already existed long before it's common uses today. I believe it was popularised with the hip-hop culture of the 90's, which brought a "cooler" way to speak for the youth (note that verlan today is not a very elegant way of speaking and should be used among friends, or if you are angry at someone, which is pretty usual in France).

Interesting, slang here has that syllable reversed/backslang:bisa can become sabi And just backslang:ngab from bang Not counting vsauce palindrome Infix -ok- most of the time cut the letter at the end of the word, and some analogized form: bokin nyokap from bini and nyonya with unknown excrescent -p.

For English speakers there is a whole article on it in wikipedia with more examples : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verlan But basically yes it's here since a couple of centuries along with other slangs (like louchébem wich gave the word 'loufoque' and also means 'crazy'). The idea behind is to hide what you say and actually verlan also got used during WW2 by the resistance. I think there was a commercial from SNCF where they tried to use verlan and appear "youth-friendly" but they overdid it (like 'bleussipo' for 'possible').

I feel the same way when foreigners talk about Russian language. I cannot imagine how difficult it is to learn for a non-native. At least I've been punished properly for my sins for learning French for almost two years now (in all seriousness, it's an amazing language and I just adore learning it even if it more often then not makes me feel frustrated).

When I used to study French (Out of boredom. Was originally semi-fluent years back, but had severely deteriorated because I had no one to practice it with), I became familiar with "verlan"....and oh my god, it was the most infuriating thing understanding it. Imagine trying to converse with someone using their language and they decide to speak normally at first, then switch to reverse slang the next.

As a french, when someone ask why it exist, we simply explain that it's the same level then "yo yo brother" and the worst wish "wesh", that literally mean *everything* (so you can hear it 7 time in one sentence...) it from arabic mixed with a deteriorated French slang apparently But not everyone know exactly, today it's commonly used from the young teen (who don't even know their own language) A french version that is not really french so

Well yes and no. French is really difficult only if you try to go too deep, imo it's one of the easiest language you can learn to speak daily. Like you know just the essentials will be more than enough to get you through most of the situations you'll encounter. Btw just a word of advice : if you go to paris expecting help or even kindness then you're fucked. Paris is everything wrong with french culture *10, just be aware of that.

Similar to Filipino Language. We do have reversed words such as "Lodi means Idol", "Werpa means Power (Pawer)", or "Etneb means Twenty (Bente)" Reversed words are widely used as a street slang words. Most of them are reversed english and tagalog words. We used it because it sounds way cooler than a normal.

Don't worry, there isn't that many verlan words used in common language. Maybe 9 or 10 at most. The most used are probably "chelou" (for "louche" = weird) and "ouf" (for "fou", = crazy) and meuf (for "femme", = woman) so the examples in the video. But it depends on the city you go to, in Paris they use more of them than in the countryside (from my experience at least).

we do that in indonesia too. like 'yuk' which is something like 'let's' becomes 'kuy'. 'mabok' (drunk) > 'kobam'. 'bang' (bro) > 'ngab'. it's not just reversing words, people just like to make words funnier/weirder, like anjing becomes anjir, shorten to njir, and now it's bjir (intentional typo I guess?). but foreigners don't really have to learn them bcs I don't think we will use them against foreigners who learn indonesian and expect them to understand😅

Well, French is a constantly moving language. We always have new words, comming from a new "language" used to be unundesrtandable by other people (verlan, argo, louchebem, and so much more). We still have many patois, language spoken in different small areas of France (Occitan, Breton, Ch'ti, and still so much more). We also often use foreign words, even if we have equivalents in french (english words, arabic, and once again, so much more). And then, when we speak, we just use a bit of each in every sentence. Imagine buying every single kind of vegetables in a market and then, trying to make a cake with everything you bought. That's french language. No surprise that people are sick...

The reason verlan became a thing is so that young people could communicate without older people fully understanding. It's kind of like a secret code. Nowadays, a lot of people know it, so it has lost that purpose, but I remember reading about it and that was the reason that was brought up. For the record, in English, there is Pig Latin, which is similar to verlan, in its logic.

Being french and actually using some of those without even realizing sometime because of how overused some of those words are, I can only say that it's a thing, and some people use it way too much and even I don't understand sometimes. le verlen est un argot (dialecte du bas peuple utiliser pour n''être compris que par le bas peuple du genre les prolos et les ouvriers qui n'ont pas confiance dans les politiques ou les étrangers) parisien littéralement utilisé pour ne pas être compris par d'autre personne que celle à qui tu parles... d'ailleurs porte nawak, ou juste nawak est une évolution issue du verlen : n'importe quoi " kwa" portenim wak => porte nawak => nawak... ainsi si vous voulez un parallèle du verlan français : pour les joueurs de Donjon et Dragon : l'argot des voleurs (thieves cant) est littéralement la même chose que le verlan...

​@@cernunnos8344certes, mais comme tu l'aura compris l'idée était de présenter quelque chose de connu par le public qui verrait ce commentaire et de faire le parallèle. Il est vrai qu'il est utile de pouvoir faire passer des messages sans se faire repérer par les autres (le principe de l'argo) cependant n'ayant pas la culture de toutes les personnes regardant ce commentaire il est difficile de sortir un exemple du monde professionnel ou délinquant qui serait compris par la majorité. Par contre il est raisonnable de supposer que les gens sur KZbin lisant les commentaires obscures aient entendu parlé de donjon et dragon et donc de cette particularité des voleurs.

Verlan is so annoying :/ Here's a non-exhaustive mini-dictionary (fuck alphabetical order) that I made as I'm fluent in both French and English: Verlan → L'envers → Backwards. Meuf → Femme → Woman or wife. (The same word is used for both.) Cimer → Merci → Thanks. Reuf → Frère → Brother. Despi → Speed. Kebla → Black. (Talking about black people.) Ouf → Fou → Crazy. Chelou → Louche → Fishy, shady, suspicious. Oim → Moi → Me. Teuf → Fête → Party or birthday or holiday. (Same word is used for all 3.) Vénère → Énervé → Angry, triggered, tilted. Chanmé → Méchant → Bad or cool or horrible. (Same word is used for all 3.) À donf → À fond → No direct translation, but it's kinda like "to the max" or "a lot". Ex: "Le volume de la musique est à donf." → "The music's volume is really loud." Pécho → Choper → To catch or to get women/men. Ex: "T'arrives à pécho?" → "Are you having any success with women/men?" Teubé → Bête → Idiot. Kéblo → Bloqué → Blocked. Relou → Lourd → Annoying, boring. Keuf → Flic → Cop/the police.

le verlan, loin d'être jeune, c'est ancré dans la langue suite a la seconde guerre mondial, utilisé pour rendre incompréhensible aux allemands les dire de la population. Maintenant, c'est entre un effet de style qui perdure au travers des jeunes générations et un argo propre aux "cités".

Pourquoi le verlan existe... eh bien c'est juste un truc des jeunes (qui maintenant on trente cinq / quarante ans +. oui c'est VIEUX) qui on juste modifiée la langue pour être rebelles et ça c'est diffusé et ça a prit. comme des mots genre LOL (ou Kek). Why the verlan exists... well it's just a thing of the young people (who are now thirty five / forty years +. yes it's OLD) who just changed the language to be rebellious and that is broadcast and it took. like words like LOL (or Kek).

Alors pas vraiment en fait ^^' c'était à la base un langage codé utilisé pour communiquer pendant la guerre qui a ensuite été popularisé par les jeunes (qui ne sont en effet plus si jeune). Well not completely actually ^^' It was first a coded language used to communicate during war and it was then popularized by young people (even though they're not that young anymore).

What I hate about the french language is that they write something really complicated and just ignore half of it. English also pulls this shit but not as hard as the French that is why I prefer german. Ever heard of Bordeaux? Could've just been Bordou. At least in german every letter has a meaning. Bordeaux is a city, a vine, a colour and i think even the region around the city is called Bordeaux .
