Wow, never thought there would be a day when Chinese university students are actually interested in studying cherrypicked and sterilized Marxism. I remember 12 years ago, I was in China and attended a Marxist class. The students all went to sleep or said "yes" or "no" to a professor speaking into a microphone. These students heard my major as an American was philosophy and thought immediately of Marxism and told me how boring it was. They couldn't imagine philosophy being taught differently and thought I was eccentric for taking an interest in reading Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) and the Yijing (I Ching). They preferred American media like "Big Bang Theory" and "Two Broke Girls" instead. Clearly that was a different time. People in China nowadays are conditioned to view their Chinese-ness as a Chinese political identity that is inseparable from the Communist party. It's wild to think how the CCP is making it harder for young people to imagine a Chinese identity outside of politics.
@lydiawilder599612 күн бұрын
Chinese socialism is heavily based on continual politicization, and class education of the masses. People have to be reminded of why class struggle existed so that they dont re-develop strict economic classes

@omarassadi2455Ай бұрын
Btw, I know you mention being self-taught repeatedly, but have you never had any sort of tutor? I feel like my Russian accent is fairly good for a non-native speaker, but I don't think I could have achieved that level if it weren't for the fact that I talked to a girl from Kemerovo for several months; I just can't imagine accurately gauging my own pronunciation properly purely based on immitating media and intermittent social interactions -- for me, at least, I think it was super helpful having a native speaker to go back-and-forth with on a daily basis. I can't claim to speak Chinese, but to my ears, as someone who lived with guy from Baoding for several years during university, whatever you have, if anything, is seemingly minor at worst; I can't personally tell between, say, my roommate and you, aside from just your actual voices. Sure, there are moments in older videos in particular where it seems like you may be speaking relatively slowly compared to a native -- e.g., perhaps not "thinking" in Mandarin -- but the actual accent is really good to my ears, and if you're truly comprehending the overwhelming majority of the vocabulary rather than catching 80% of the words and guesstimating the meaning from there, then I am stunned. p.s. I am envious of your Rrrr - I don't think I ever mastered that properly; Russian has it too, like Finnish, but 99% of the time, you can get away with doing, like, for lack of a better description, this "tongue flap" -- it's more-or-less rolled, and it works in daily speech, but I absolutely cannot do it in isolation or exaggerate the sound; I am essentialy faking it.
