I just "discovered" this 1967 version today although I know of the other version covered by Lighthouse Family in 2001. Even listening to this today for the first time, 55 years after its release, I am in awe with the deeply soul touching rendition by Nina Simone. The lyrics and tune are just beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes.

This song was used as the intro to Freedom: A History of Us. I had to watch that series in junior year American History class and fell in love with this song. Almost 6 years later, I couldn’t remember the name of the series or song or the artist or lyrics. Still managed to find it just now, thanks to KZbin ads showing PBS titles to buy on DVD.
