WOW! I've been looking for this clip for years! (It was actually filmed for the Chanel 4 programme 'Wired', rather than 'The Wire'). I set-up this interview because I was one of the researchers on Wired and a huge fan. Nina began the interview not too happy, banging out 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' and no doubt expecting to have to present some flimsy fan fodder, but she immediately warmed beautifully and visibly to the lovely, and now sadly late, Tim Graham. Tim was a lifelong follower, as was his Mum whose influence had given him such a deep knowledge of Nina's work. You can see the bond from the get-go and especially when he clearly knows 'Consummation' - quite a rarely hear song I think. She's right, England gives her honour - and what an honour it was to be in that room that day!

I grew up with a dad who was obsessed with Nina, I grew up taking her music for granted. Now I'm an adult I'm understanding the power she held. As a woman, as a black woman in America. Even in the way she held herself. I always found her so beautiful. That portrait on one of her album covers where it's her side profile is a huge source of inspiration for me in my creative life. Truly a Queen.

I've woken up and put on Nina Simone's "Here Comes The Sun" a few hundred times. Love this woman. If you have a chance, read her autobiography, angry and raw and you really get a sense of why she was the way she was, and why people were ferocious in their adoration of her.

This is one of my favorite Nina Simone interviews. In most of them she does not appear to be happy. It's nice to see that she was a happy woman. I read in a biography that, late in life, she was diagnosed as bipolar.
@michaelkylow44117 жыл бұрын
Yeah! And it is important to say that most of her issues and intensity (or sadness, as you please) are due to all the hate/prejudice towards her because of her skin color; paraphrasing her song: “Ya'll people, goddamn!! ”, definitely a great (or the greatest) woman.
@BLKENDOLLBARBIE7 жыл бұрын
I think she had trouble coping with the trauma of being abused by a man she loved. I also think the pressures that came along with being so gifted were hard for her to handle. She was trained to be this amazing force from age four. Nina clearly just wanted to know who she truly was as a living person without having someone else's opinion dictate her life's journey. It's seems to me that she understood that her gift in music was something larger then her, something from a divine source.

when I hear her talk or sing, all I feel from her is warmth and love....she oozes kindness and love. I dont think she was born, tough. I believe the circumstances she was born into (poverty, segregation, female struggles) conditioned her to be VERY tough...as well as what she endured in the music industry. But she projects kindness and love. I wish I could have met her personally just to tell her that. I saw her in concert, a few yrs before she died. And I felt like I was witnessing royalty. She was incredible. And her music is untouchable.

I love her speaking voice as much as her singing voice. To those outside the US, Nina Simone was not technically born in the "Deep South" as the host says. The Deep South is traditionally considered those states who seceded from the US before Ft. Sumter was attacked. NC was a "border state," which while not literally on the border between the CSA and the USA, seceded after Ft. Sumter, as did VA, AK, and TN. Of course, TX is not usually considered Deep South either so the term is muddled.
