I have goosebumps. Her use of arms, head and upper body is amazing, her every pose, every gesture and face expression is so full of meaning, as if I were watching Swan Lake for the first time. She should always dance with Korsuntsev, he makes her look even more fragile. He also looks better with such Odette!

This is an amazing video. Alina is flawless in her interpretation and brings a fresh look to the ballet. Agree that Korsuntesev should be her partner in that she couldn't do it without him making everything smooth. The filming was excellent in that we could see not only her technique but her facial expressions. Bravo!

Wow. What a difference a few years and a different coach make. Seems like Somova has gotten over "the big girl jitters" and her "extension-philia" and found her own way with The Dance. She gives a polished and affecting performance here, with true ballerina quality. She reminds me of a younger and unmannered Lopatkina; tall, long-limbed, statuesque. Bringing out the Queen in Swan Queen comes easily to her. And even her high, stretched "escaping attitudes" at 1:30 are touching.

It is rare that I particularly enjoy Somova, but here she really gives my favorite swan-dancers (Zakharova especially) a run for their money. She has quite matured as an artist and has the rare gift of acting, especially for tragic roles. She is lovely and refined here, from the minute she bourred onto stage (did I mention I love the way she makes the tutu move when she bourres in place?). :)

A wonderful performance from Somova indeed: musical and poetic while still remaining within the classical style of the ballet. She is also extremely fortunate to be partnered by Korsuntsev, the Mariinsky's best partner - always unobtrusive, complementing and presenting his ballerina to perfection, and strong enough to make all those difficult high lifts look like fleeting moments of beauty captured in time. Thank you for enabling us to see this.

the woman can dance. It is malicious to detract her.... I do believe and I am serious, as absurd as it might sound, that many of her critics are annoyed by the fact that she is too beautiful...
@arepo8 жыл бұрын
+MariaCaIIas I do not question the sincerity of your "belief", but I hope you are aware that wishful thinking and fact are two very different things. You don't know anything about the background of those commenters and to assume there is an ulterior motive is nothing else but wishful thinking. Criticism doesn't automatically translate into envy, and criticism and detraction aren't the same thing.

This is how it all started. When the iron curtain came down, the West was caught by surprise. They hadn't seen anything like the beauty of the current Russian dancers at the time: the amazing turnout, the incredible flexibility, the beautiful extensions, the lyricism, the strength. Alina graduated from the Vaganova Academy and was quickly catapulted into principal roles (2003/4) shortly after the West started learning more about Russian ballet. As the Western dance world was exposed to these beautiful, talented Russian dancers, many were overcome with defensiveness. The online campaign against her beautiful flexibility started. All the Russians have the same extensions and flexibility, but for some reason the critics zeroed in on Alina -- perhaps more initial online exposure than some of the others. The Russians raised the ballet technique bar; and it will never go back, because the new height is extraordinarily beautiful. She is beautiful, appears to be a lovely person, is a beautiful dancer, and has a beautiful ballet body. She has an electricity on stage that few dancers match. As with all new soloists, her artistry has grown over time with experience; and the combination of talent and growing artistry has landed her in the inner circle of the best in the world, no matter whether she is a personal favorite or not.

Ok for everyone saying shes was like a gymnast. She is not doing aerials or tumbling passes. I am an acrobatic dancer and ballet dancer. Having high extensions and large combre arches are in no way shape or form dancing like a gymnast. Shes extremely tall so having enough control might have been a problem due to her height so it might have had a rough gymnast feel. I am much smaller so that is not a problem for me really. But acrobatic which is wear extensions and back flexibility come in is one of the most controlled beautiful styles. Please distinguish the difference. I feel like ballerinas do not really understand anything except ballet and judge anyone who does things a little differently and have a hard time embracing different styles and maybe even breaking rules a little. (High extensions) please try and be more accepting.

OLTREMODO BRAVI E SPETTACOLARI. I would like to express personal opinion regarding ballerinas’ tutu. Female ballet dancers are usually so slim that wearing tutu seamless boy shorts in matching the tutu colors instead of small panties would not make their beautiful legs short. There are top professional ballet female dancers who wore better covering of their rears that look stunning and professional, and beautiful.

I see the artistry in Lapotkina and Vishneva, for sure. My personal favorite now is Zakharova. But the way that Somova would dance, all technical bravado would sort of remind of bel canto opera. It's about pushing the envelope and not necessarily exploring the art. Which doesn't mean that Callas singing "Tosca" isn't amazing. But sometimes just watching someone do something amazing, even without the poetry, can be great too. At least to me! Hope that made sense. :)

OK, I'm new-ish to ballet, and I certainly don't have the eye for things that someone who has followed it forever does. Please bear with me. :) Ever since seeing the documentary "Ballerina" I wanted to see what Somova has been up to, so I've watched some of her videos and read some reviews and columns from around the web. And most of the reviews agreed with you about her earlier work. And I can see the difference, even. But is it wrong if I sort of like the crazy extensions and stuff? cont'd

Russian dancers often look very involved with every movement that their body is doing, like.. 'look, i'm extending very high', 'look at my perfect turnout', 'look, i'm doing great hand movements', 'look, i just did a perfect wing flap', 'look, i just turned my head correctly'..... Rather than just playing the part as if the technique is second nature and just an assumption. So, although on one hand they look 'perfect', on the other hand they are sometimes tiresome and boring to watch, kind of slow. Just an honest observation.They should take some pointers from someone like Susan Jaffe. Yes, this was a while back, but there are still some videos around.

@Malcriada1158 жыл бұрын
Mitzy Pinks Well, dancers do not have large chests, but there is a difference between "tiny" and "zero". That means she is not menstruating, and in my view that's going too far. Have you read Gelsey Kirkland's "Dancing on My Grave"?

These ballerinas have to understand that from a viewer's perspective, the higher up you raise your leg, the longer it takes, so overall this slows down the flow of the dance. Yes, it is a subtle difference, but you have to understand that it is a constant balance that you can't just ignore for the sake of a bigger 'effect'. Sometimes in order not to sacrifice the overall flow and beauty one has to raise a leg not quite as high. Again, it's a subtle thing and a question of the dancer's intelligence i think. It's a question of putting the technique at the service of the art and not the other way around. Susan Jaffe in my opinion was the epitome of that intelligence. When you choose future ballerinas, you have to look at overall talent and depth of it, not just physical form and ability. And i'm afraid what's going on in the Russian ballet today is just that - each ballerina, even when they're famous, is just a little screw in a huge pile. It's almost like a conveyor belt machine - they have a particular approach to selecting and raising them, but there is nobody to critique it, to improve the criteria, to make it truly intelligent. It's almost like there are too many of them and they are all too much the same, perfect in a one-sided way, yet each not special enough, and ultimately that is bad for the art. This reminds me a little bit of what is going on with figure skating as well. Over time this trend could lead to a decline of the number of 'surprises' (in a good sense) and to the overall degradation of Russia's leadership in the art (though it is obviously still the leader, though arguably only due to the decline in overall quality worldwide)

She has toned down her extensions a bit, but her arabesques are still far from what they should be. Her arms here are decidedly better than in her last YT video, and there is also some artistic growth - not much, but noticeable. But she is so flat chested and so thin that the bottom of her rib cage protrudes way more than her chest, making for an ugly line each time she bends her torso - and given the choreography, she bends quite a lot.
@arepo8 жыл бұрын
In terms of artistic growth I was comparing her with her former self pre-2011. I am aware this is a video from 2011. Unlike most yt users I actually read the description before commenting. To surprise you further, I even watch the video. However since my original comment I have watched more actual videos and I'm sorry to say there's no improvement since 2011, there's even regression (artistically). Body-wise it's the same sickled feet, protruding rib cage, and bad posture. Arms are worse.

Bírom mikor valaki arc nélkül nekiáll elképesztő hozzáértést és lexikai tudást színlelve, egy Vaganova Iskolát végzett prima balerina arabesque-jét és egyéb mozdulatait bírálni. Felfordul tőle a gyomrom. Ha meg nem csinálja jól, vagy egyáltalán sehogy, akkor milyen alapon veszi a fáradságot, hogy ilyeneket írkáljon le: ..."but her arabesques are still far from what they should be"... Pfujj..
