Thanks to Brain Age 2, I have found Sudoku to actually be an addictive game. Now, I have not played 999 before, but I get the formula they were going for here. Everything has to fall perfectly in place and flow congruently as well. Otherwise, you are making assumptions without thinking, and, as seen here, that could have consequences.

The only thing that confused me about the ending was that they never explained how Akana (aka June) was able to exist in the present if she died in a certain point in the past? The only thing I could think of because she had the chance to survive she was flickering in and out of existence thus her fevers

I'm going to go with the same principles of Schrödinger's cat are applyed to the events of the game in itself. The whole game was set up by Santa (Aoi) and June (Akane) to save Akane. In the situation, the main player is Junpei, and she needs him to follow a certain path in order to save her. This explains why Akane disapears in some endings, as when Junpei follows the wrong path, Akane dies in the past. But when Junpei follows the set path that leads to the true ending, It means that Akane will survive her situation in the path as long as Junpei is able to send her the solution of the upside down sudoku puzzle. funnily enough, said puzzle gives the solution to the predicament that him, Seven, Lotus, Clover and Snake are in, allowing everyone to escape. Schrödinger's cat is very important to the story of both 999 and Virtue's Last Reward, but i wont get into spoilers.

She has the ability to move her mind through time with and without a body, so she essentially projects her mind into the future to bring Junpei and the others together to save herself in the past. Also as someone mentioned Schrodinger's cat has quite a bit to do with this series, moreso in VLR

Lol the game has 6 different endings, of which 3 of them end up with you dead and 2 are cliffhangers, one of which ends up with plenty of people dead as well. It takes a lot of trial and error and a lot of playthroughs to nail this ending but whether that time is better invested in other things is up to the person I suppose so fair play for looking it up. My first playthrough I got murdered with an axe and then got stabbed in my next two so best of luck if you find yourself revisiting this game to get the rest of the endings :)

I know this video is very old but i just played through the game and finished the True Ending. I have a question though. People say that Akane NEVER died because it's a timeloop, she saw the future and recreated the game to be saved by Junpei so she could survive and recreate the game and on and on and on. Now, here's the question. All the bad endings, being cannon or not, couldn't happen at all. In the bad endings Junpei fails to save Akane so she did died 9 years ago, right? But how is there a Zero? And how is the recreation of the Nonary game happening if she dind't survived to recreate it?

Schrödinger's cat, and a lot of Bullshit. Truthfully, I can't explain it because I'm not super into scientific theories and philosphy and all that stuff. My best guess is that Akane projects herself onto her brother Aoi, who sets up most of the stuff in the game, and somehow is there for the nonary game with the cast of 999, then whenever Junpei fucks up, she disappears. Maybe some Multiverse theory in which she hops from one universe to another where she escapes but requires future Junpei's help.

I know this comment was four years ago, but I've only recently replayed this for the third time and a lot of it clicked for me this time around. It's actually very brilliant storytelling. And I've been eager to lay my thoughts all out that I actively went seeking for spoiler discussions xD So I hope you'll forgive me making this comment after so long~ It's not actually a time loop. For Akane, it's just an instance where she and Future Junpei actually meet. And then she moves on after she saves herself. It's not a time LOOP, it's an alternate time LINE. Here's the plot point people miss: Akane never actually died in the first place. But the others THINK she did. Remember that the only evidence you have of Akane's death are from Seven and Snake's accounts. Clover's account is based on Snake's and Ace can't tell that they're the same person, so he has no reason to ever bring her up or ask questions herself. As evidence, he failed to recognize Santa and could only remember Snake, because he had a particularly memorable fact about him (blindness). As for Seven's account...well, the True Ending gives you a small hint at the truth of the matter. Rewatch the scene at 1:01:35 but with the mindset that Seven may not have been completely truthful about what he told the group. Remember that, at the time, all the original participants were kids. Seven, however, was not only an adult, but a detective. You could argue that Snake and/or Santa could piece it together, but Snake is blind and thus couldn't determine whether or not there was physical evidence (the 5 bracelet) and Santa was not exactly in the right mindset at the time. He was too busy being distraught about his sister to realize a simple inconsistency. You might think "But then why would Seven lie to the kids and tell them Akane died?" Well the thing is...he didn't. He thought she had died too. At first. Remember that he didn't yet know the RULES of the Nonary Game, nor the functions of the bracelets. But later, after it was explained to him, he could make a single connection: There was no bracelet in that incinerator, and thus Akane could have theoretically somehow survived. But not wanting to get the kids' hopes up over a mere possibility, he said nothing. This possibility is that Ace pulled her out of the room himself at the last minute. Realizing something might have gone wrong in his experiment, he pulled her out to avoid her dying a needless death, and thus ruining the experiment he'd dumped so much money into. He pulled her back into the depths of the ship where his method of escape, a yellow submarine, was waiting for him. Meanwhile, Seven and the kids enter the room and think Akane was incinerated. What happened to Akane after that is a mystery. However, at some point, she regained her independence and managed to get in contact with her brother Aoi. And together, they plotted the entire Nonary Game. They enlisted the help of Seven and convinced him that nobody was going to be in actual danger in this plan (there were no actual bombs or detonators involved except for the men that were Aoi's original target to begin with). Then, when the time came, they gave him a drug that knocked him out and gave him amnesia. And, when his memory comes back, he remembers the original plan...and lies to the group. Why? To spin the story the three of them wanted to spin: that they were there to save Akane. When in actuality, their goal was to capture Ace, the true mastermind of the original kidnapping incident, and reveal what happened 9 years prior. However...Aoi wanted more than that, and he set things up to tempt Ace into killing his co-conspirators as well. As far as I can tell, this is a far more logical line of reasoning than the Schrödinger's Cat style explanation. Akane's disappearances during certain endings are because she was Zero and simply slipped away when nobody was looking. Her "fevers" are likely just that. After all, at this point she's probably only college age and has likely been working herself to death to put all this together. Although it's also possible that even simply being in a replica like this brings back bad memories for her and her body responds the way it does because her brain keeps putting her back in that hot incinerator room.

Nice of the game to make sense for having to do multiple playthroughs in ordre to get the only good ending, but there's still one thing I don't quite understand (I may have skipped the part explaining it, though)... All the mumbo-jumbo about the resonance phenomena aside, how Aoi and June did all this ? I mean, they are just teenagers. Ace had an entire organisation to abuct people, and we are to believe that the two of them kidnapped all the other people (including four from a powerful company !) juste like that ? I'm baffled.

My main complaint on the final "sudoku puzzle" is why didnt you do it logically? Either just do it from top to bottom, left to right, or at least act like you did it logically. FFS, Akane was waiting for you to solve it!
