Ninh explains - The Rules of International Rules Football - a hybrid game that combines the rules of Gaelic Football from Ireland and Australian Rules Football from Australia. Not sure why people requested this one, as it’s largely an exhibition match that’s played once every two years between the Irish and the Aussies. But meh - hope you guys enjoy it all the same. If the very short-lived hybrid sports of Austus and Universal Football were still around, you could possibly do a video on them. Austus was an Aussie Rules/American Football hybrid game played during WWII by Australian and American soldiers. Because of the unavailability for the two nations to compete against each other in their own respective football codes, it was decided to make a hybrid game from the two sports. I believe it was mainly rules from Australian Football, but played with a Gridiron ball and throwing like they do in Gridiron was allowed. A ball thrown over 10 yards (9.14 metres) could be marked and a free kick/throw awarded, and goals could be scored from throwing the ball from 20 or more yards away from the goals. The first game was played with two 25 minute halves. But after the American soldiers left Australia after WWII, the game disappeared. Universal Football was a proposed Aussie Rules/Rugby League hybrid game proposed a few times in the early 1900s as a potential national game to be played around Australia, but the game disappeared after a private trial game was held. It would have been played on a large rectangular field, similar in size to an Aussie Rules field, 15 players per side and rugby-style goal posts with a crossbar. The methods of scoring were grounding the ball in the in-goal area for a try, which would have 3 points plus a conversion attempt; a goal kicked from general play or on the run would have been 2 points; a successful conversion or goal from a mark or free kick would be 1 point and grounding the ball in the defensive in-goal area for a ‘touch down’ would concede 1 point. A ball up would replace the rugby league scrum, throws would be permitted, forward passes and knock ons were disallowed and a deliberate kick for goal or conversion was given to a player who marked the ball or scored a try, rather than a designated goalkicker. A trial game was held but after that, the game disappeared and the whole concept has never been revisited since.

As an Australian who has followed/played aussie rules my whole life, I discovered gaelic football through international rules. I'm so thankful for that because I now love both gaelic football and hurling. I wish we played this more often. I'd love to see a yearly 3 game series. It's just a brilliant opportunity for the players to represent their country in sports that they otherwise wouldn't get the opportunity to, plus it's a great spectacle. It's not quite as good as aussie rules or gaelic football by themselves, but as a compromise it is absolutely fantastic

Common misconception! Whilst it looks like it's more based on Gaelic Football (because of the field, the ball and the points), the general game play favours the Aussies. The game uses marks (not in Gaelic Football until recently) as well as physical tackles (illegal in Gaelic Football) on a smaller field which the Aussies will find easier to run on than an Aussie Rules pitch. Everything else is pretty much 50/50 as moving the ball is similar for both sports.

For a penalty kick, can you opt for a shot between the uprights or 3 points as well?
@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe so.
@benoitblanchard15767 жыл бұрын
Well, in Aussie Rules there's absolutely no rule dictating what you can or cannot do with a free kick (you're even allowed to run outside your protected zone with the ball to get a better shot, although you can be fairly tackled before you take the shot if you do that) I suppose it's probably the same with International Rules.
@clayfada69937 жыл бұрын
The problem is nobody knows for sure since they are no international rules fans just Gaelic football or aussie rules fans .The rules change from series to series its not a stand alone sport.However i would imagine the penalty kick is from gaelic football and a penalty kick can be result in a wideor in this case a behind point or goal score over the bar either by design or accidently.In gaelic football a point over the bar would be more accidental now from a penalty kick because the penalty kick is closer and a goal is easier than it used be its more or less guaranteed in the old days it wasnt so a kick over the bar was often the better option even though it is one(3 in this game) compared to 3 for a goal(6 in this game)

Also this year's one happens at the end of October so there'll be lots of HD footage of the event on BBC iPlayer to cite :)

I think Aussie rules is played around the world, but you just don't hear about it. The best players however come from Australia. International rules is easier to adopt due to a smaller playing field. @craigtyle7 жыл бұрын
I raised AFLX as it seems like another alternative (like international rules) -- smaller field, fewer players and some similar rules, e.g., last touch, no mark for backwards kicks, etc. But I think you're right that it hasn't really been played much yet. I do want to note that it was a few years ago, when i decided to check out some sports I wasn't familiar with, that I watched a bunch of your videos, including those on Aussie and gaelic football and both types of rugby. "....a new hybrid, American and Australian football!" What are you talking about? ....Are you talking about austus? In 1943, as a way of bringing the allies Australia and the U.S. closer together in spirit (...and also because there were tens of thousands of American soldiers stationed in Australia, a staging area in the fight against the Japanese in New Guinea, the Solomons, and other southwest Pacific locations; and because there had been brawling between G.I.s and local Aussies -- civilian and military -- as well as at least one media-reported rape case involving a G.I.), ...a hybrid football sport was devised which featured the American-style football and the forward pass combined with Aussie Rules oval football pitch and other Aussie Rules features, which was called AUSTUS football. A handful of exhibition matches were played during the War. Sadly, it did not survive the War period. Film footage of the game being played is as rare and sketchy as the remaining film footage of the extinct Tasmanian tiger! But, there's a surviving booklet explaining the rules of this code. Behold the Rules of Austus (abridged): graham64.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/austus-booklet-1.pdf . I think it would be great if fans of Aussie Rules in America (and Australian fans of gridiron) would dust this off and organize an exhibition in either country.

I wish there was a way to Americanize this sport, I’m sure you would cave to change some of the rules so that people in America can play it. Maybe fewer players on the field, getting rid of bouncing and soloing the ball, and maybe get rid of the mark rule. Also have it where if the ball goes out of bounds on the sidelines, have the ref throw the ball back in just like in Aussie rules football. You can have 11 players on the field (5 forwards, 3 half backs, 2 full backs, and 1 goalkeeper). Also have the center bounce between the 2 centers to start each quarter and to restart the game after a goal.

Ultimately, it's Gaelic football with a different point system (which I like), quarters instead of halves (which is fine) and Marks (which is so-so, but certainly changes the nature of the game). To be honest, I'd rather just stick with Gaelic Football - or slightly modify it for more overall international appeal. For what it's worth, I'd say Gaelic Football => International Rules Football > Aussie Rules (which is still a totally cool sport).

I'm not quite sure about the Mark part. When it's caught, does the one who caught it get the kick, or does it go to the opposing team?
@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the person who catches a mark then takes a free kick. The mark is a reward for kicking it 15m or more and successfully catching it. Hope that helps?

Good video. But there was no explanation of the goaltender. In some sports, the goalie has special status and cannot be roughed up. It seems in this sport, he's colliding with others when the ball is in the air, his knee out as he jumps up, to knock his opponent down. He sometimes tackles or checks an opponent and I assume can also be tackled or checked. He has all the responsibilities of being a goalie but also has to be as rough & tough as his teammates.

@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Not really. Whilst the field, ball and 6 point goals favour the Irish - the general game-play favours the Aussies.
@chambzors17 жыл бұрын
Ninh Ly I disagree that a smaller field makes it easier. It's actually harder
@clayfada69936 жыл бұрын
Must be some advantage in having a smaller pitch,because the aussies shortened it quite considerably by about 15metres to 130metres instead of 145 which is the length of the croke park pitch for example michael

Well, just to start, they didnt averaged the scores right (and maybe didnt averaged other thigns right too). The actual score system, if they did averaged the scores right would be really different and complex: The result: kick ball at goal without hiting the goal posts or being deflected by other player behind the goal = 9 kick ball at goal hiting the goal posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 4 fist ball at goal= 0 fist the ball over the center posts over the goal, hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 1 fist the ball over the center posts over the goal, without hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 1 kick the ball over the center posts over the goal, hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 2 kick the ball over the center posts over the goal, without hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 7 fist the ball betwen the long and short post = 0 kick the ball betwen the long and short post, hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 1 kick the ball betwen the long and short post, without hiting the posts or being deflected by another player behind the goal = 1 Anyway, assuming fisting the ball dont get points at this sport, and being deflected by posts and players counts normally, the result would be simpler: Kicking the ball at goal = 9 Kicking the ball over the center post above the goal = 7 Kicking the ball betwen the long and short posts = 1

I prefer "Association Football" or "soccer" for americans called as International Football... Because it only use foot... Not use any hands except for goal keeper and when throw in... And its the most popular type of football and sport around the world...

International Football refers to this sport - the hybrid game of Aussie Rules and Gaelic Football combined. Association Football or Soccer refers to the other sport. These are two completely different things.

solid swipes The GAA brought in the offensive mark ,though not quite the same as the aussie mark it means that there is no real substantial difference except for the tackle.They are minor differences like the time ,direct pick of the ball off the ground,the posts ,travelling rules,handpass limitations(not found in either sport) its only the tackle that makes the game very distinct from gaelic football.Even the posts were present in gaelic football one hundred years ago and some were still around years later according to my father who saw them.

@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly yes. I think this was the GAA/AFL's attempt at bringing their sports to mass exposure by compromising their rules. However, the reaction was fairly muted and given that Australia and Ireland refuse to give up their own sports, this will remain an exhibition sport at best.
@clayfada69937 жыл бұрын
No not exactly its to allow both sets of players to have an international outlet even if it would be better if it was in the regular code its better than nothing.these games have an enormous competitive disadvantage when competing with rugby codes soccer and cricket who have international competition.For example irish fans are known for the great atmosphere they bring to tournaments .That can;t happen for gaelic or hurling its a purely domestic thing which is good but we are missing something nonetheless
@AWF10002 жыл бұрын
probably the closest thing we will ever see professional AFL athletes compete internationally. because we will never see them in the world championship of Australian Football since amateurs are only allowed.

soccer is not true football, aussie rules, american football, and rugby, even international rules are true football games as you can only score a goal by by kicking the ball, soccer goals can be scored with any part of the body except the arms, soccer could be called head ball, leg ball, bum ball, back ball, groin ball, all legit methods of scoring a goal. In gaelic a goal is by foot, or fist. Im irish, and i find international rules very entertaining, the early games were very physical, and at times violent, but the codes have mostly stopped that

I don't like rules that you can only walk 6 steps holding the ball, can only hand pass 4 times in row and can only triple it twice. Someone has to count that and as a freetime sport this would suck really hard. At least it seems to me like that.
@NinhLyUK5 жыл бұрын
It's easier than you think. Referees are trained to spot it and players are trained to take more steps so it's not as difficult as you'd imagine.

I just don't understand what's so interesting with ppl in West and Australia in holding the ball and running around the field and then kick it Won't lie but I like rugby but really don't understand the purpose behind other sports. Sports like hockey, cricket, Football, basketball, volleyball are some decent sports that requires technique and good skills and good reflexes too

"I just don't understand what's so interesting with ppl in West and Australia in holding the ball and running around the field and then kick it" The appeal is football. Football is popular, and they are all types of it. It really is that simple.
