Ninh explains - The Rules of Judo. These are the new 2017 rules, the main changes are the following: They have abolished Yuko's, two Waza-Ari no longer equals Ippon, both men and women now compete in 4 minute bouts and Shido's are carried over from normal time. This is to simplify the sport to make it easier for the casual spectator to understand when watching this on TV.

I heard the 2018 rules for judo are already out and Waza-Ari-Awasatte-Ippon is being reinstated

So are leg locks and such illegal? Are most submissions legal or only arm bars and chokes?
@vitoravila9908

Caeleb Maiden armlocks and chokes, no leg, foot or wrist locks, nor neck cranks or muscle compressions(biceps/calf slicer) Those techniques do exists in the martial art, as well as throws grabbing the legs/pants, but they are banned from competition. You mostly learn them as a black belt and above, normally as parts os katas

I like how in your more recent videos you're including the usual context in which a sport is played. Actually, have you ever considered doing a series of videos explaining how certain leagues work? Like say the amount of teams, games, teams that go into playoffs, major rule changes from the standard rules, etc? I think that would be an interesting idea.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 7 жыл бұрын
Whilst it's a good idea in theory - leagues for the same sport vary wildly and (seemingly) every year. The sheer effort it takes to make one of these things means that it's not really worth it. Thanks anyway though.

I hope someone can explain. It's been 40 years since l did judo but l remember there was a throw called katagaruma. I believe you need to grab the opponents sleeve with one hand and their leg with the other? Also there was a throw called sukenage (l think that's how it's written?) You can do it by grabbing both trouser legs but in theory both legs as well. When or why did the rules change that you cannot grab the leg?

DO IT BELOW THE BELT (or on the belt itself) - AND YOU WILL GET PENALIZED! 1. One time you are caught - a shido. 2. Leg grabbing was still allowed as Counter or as Combination. Just not as initial Grab. don't know if they changed that as well. No, that's part of the rules. White or blue only.

Grabbing the trousers with the intention of throwing results in Shido! Why though? that seems superficial.

I think 1 ippon for win rule is so bad, it has to be 2 at least, after first ippon competitors know eachother than maybe the defeated one make 2 counter ippon and win, isn't this way is more fun and fair

It seems kind of strange that in a grappling art like judo you cant grab the legs! I guess it's stand up grappling more akin to Greco-Roman wrestling than it is to something like bjj or freestyle wrestling.

To my understanding, doing something like a morote gari is illegal in competitions because it will lead injuries. It most likely started back in the late 1890s when Mataemon Tanabe, a jujutsuka of the Fusen-ryū style, took part of a exhibition match in Kyoto. His opponent was Yuji Hirooka, a jujutsuka of the Kasumi Shin-ryū style and 3rd dan judoka. At the end of the match, Tanabe won by scoring a morote gari and applying an ashi garami, a variation of an ankle lock. Although Hirooka gave up, his leg broke as a result. At the next reunion at the Butoku Ka, Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, proposed to forbid any leglocks in future regular jujutsu/judo competitions due to the possibility of lasting damage. Both Tanabe and Kaisuke Masuda, a jujutsuka of the Shinnuki-ryū style, object to this, stating Judo is as dangerous as Jujutsu. However, both were overruled.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'counter', but if you mean 'striking', then no. You can counter a throw by using your opponents energy against them and throwing yourself, as in 0:47 of the video. Blue tries to throw, but white counters with a throw of his own, forcing blue to land on his back. Hope that helps?

Not anymore. Grabbing the legs was banned completely in 2009. Before that, judo had double legs, single legs, and pickups just like wrestling. Now, they're just techniques you learn for your belt test.

Usually for two reasons - one, it's a winter sport and it's usually cold. And two, it's a way of showing support by waving, holding them in the air (look up 'Liverpool's You'll Never Walk Alone' and you'll see what I mean).
