I felt compelled to make this video because people seemingly don't understand why different people call different sports 'football'. I thought the answer was obvious personally. But it's mainly to get some form of entertainment from some of the delusional comments that will no doubt appear on here. Popcorn at the ready folks. EDIT: The dislikes must be from the 'offended' ones that perpetrate the handegg 'joke'. Such uptightness.

That ending though... Cracked me up! Great vid, keep up the good work. I love your work, even if i basically never get around to watching any of the sports you cover, it's always interesting to see what different kinds exist in the world. Also, i LOVED and was quite chocked when you covered pesäpallo, given that basically no one outside of Finland knows it exists and even if they know, they probably think it's just a rules variant of baseball, when the two are quite different and only really share the bases and the hitting the ball with a bat...

@celebrim1 5 жыл бұрын
@@emmettkeane4822 You could, but the stick ball games diverged from the non-stick ball games well before the 13th century. Since they are equally as old as football, the need to distinguish them from football is equally old. While "baseball" is generally thought of as an American sport, it's actually an English sport where the original name of "baseball" lost currency in the 18th century and became known as "rounders" (except in America, where it was already played under several different rules). Cricket is a variation that began as "stool ball" (the wicket originated from a 3 legged stool). Hockey is even older and belongs to a different family of sports that could be as much as 6000 years old. Hurling itself is older than football, and goes back at least 3500 years. The reason is that hockey family sports don't require the technology of an inflatable bladder, and so can be played quite well by stone age peoples using wooden pucks and the like.

Despite having a population of only 25 million people, Australia is the only country in the world that supports four professional football codes: 1. Association football 2. Australian rules football 3. Rugby league 4. Rugby union Gaelic football and American football are also played, but at an amateur level. Technically, there are other forms of football - "hybrid" games that combine elements of the main forms of football. Examples are "International Rules", which is a composite of Gaelic and Australian Rules football, and "AUSTUS", which was a combination of American and Australian Rules football. There was an attempt to make a composite version of Australian Rules football and Rugby League in the early 1930's, but the idea was abandoned after one trial game.

I had an argument with an European dude who tried to convince me that only the US says "soccer", and I told him that Australia once had the Australian Soccer Federation and National Soccer League before changing its name but they don't believe. I'm starting to think they are trolls just arguing just to argue. It's amazing how little Europeans know about the world but are always trying to argue with people about it. Most European countries are small and are only the size of a state or province within US and Australia. Australia, America, and Canada could swallow entire parts of the Europe continent. So the Europeans have no reference to understand how there can be numerous football sports played in one place hence the word soccer. Soccer itself is a lesser used British slang term derived from asSOCiation football that became more popular in the US, Canada, Australia, etc where there are other forms of football yet they believe that Americans and Australians invented the term "soccer".
@markdp1983
@markdp1983 3 жыл бұрын
@SFC United Some reasons why Australia is trying to not call it soccer as much; as I understand. Firstly branding the leagues and federations “Football” brings it in to line with the rest of the world’s brandings. Secondly there was some BS argument that calling it “soccer” is disrespectful, as it’s a nickname for the sport. (the nickname is from UK; not US as someone mentioned above!) Thirdly Australia has done better on the world stage; qualifying for the last few World Cups; and many Aus players playing in major leagues in EU, etc. so it’s a sign of respect, treating it seriously etc. Its got to be at least 15 maybe 20 years that they’ve branded the leagues and federations “Football”.. Problem is most people have to still say “soccer” to differentiate. When you say football in the Northern states most people think Rugby League.. When you say football in the Southern and Western states most people think Aussie Rules/ AFL... So I think the term “soccer” will still be used In Australia for a while yet! I cant imagine they will ever rebrand the MLS in the US!

As an Aussie myself, something that’s worth pointing out about my code of football as opposed to soccer is the goal scoring aspect. In Soccer, you can either kick or headbutt the ball into the goal to score, as long as you don’t use your hands of course. Meanwhile in Aussie Rules Football you can only ever score a goal (worth 6 points) by kicking the ball through through the two larger posts. Do anything else like headbutting the ball in and you only score what is called a ‘touched behind’, with similar repercussions to a ‘behind’ (the ball going between a larger goalpost and a smaller behind post); you get only one point and the opponent gets a free kick.

Great video as always, Ninh! Note regarding the part about rugby for those who are unaware: It was absolutely played before the formation of the Football Association. Several colleges and clubs around England played a number of different codes of football, and the FA was formed by a number of these clubs to standardise the laws of the game, creating what we now call "association football". One of the codes represented at the formation meeting was rugby (created at Rugby School), however the rugby-playing clubs left after the sixth FA meeting as motions were passed banning players from running with the ball or "hacking" (kicking opponents in the shins, which was ironically banned when the Rugby Football Union was formed).

I always thought it was funny that European people demand Americans to stop calling American football "football" when American Football is a descendant of rugby football which was one of the early legitimate variations of English football. NFL football, Canadian football, Aussie Rules, rugby union, and rugby league are ALL football derived from the early forms of football in the 1800s that allowed players to pick the ball up from the ground with their hands. Gaelic football also uses hands. Associaton football/soccer has never had a monoplogy on "football" but because it is massively popular worldwide, ignorant people think there is just one sport called football and any sport using hands isn't "real football" when hand versions of football have existed just as long as the foot only version of football. Infact even the "foot only" version uses hands. Goalkeepers can use their hands in association football to throw the ball towards teammates and also bviously to block shots. Players also do "throw ins" when the ball exits the pitch. So they also use hands in association football just like how the ball is also kicked by certain position players in the NFL. But you would think by the way that football/soccer fans speak, that NO ONE on the pitch uses their hand.

One end of the spectrum is FIFA where you kick the ball with your feet and at the other end of the Spectrum is RFU/RFL where you throw the ball with your hands. NFL/CFL goes beyond RFU/RFL. So-called gridiron football is a direct descendant of rugby union. It goes back to two game between McGill University of Montreal and Harvard. The first game was played under the old Boston rules that Harvard played under and the second under the rugby union rules McGill used. Harvard liked the rugby union rules and the Ivy League started to play under a modified version of them. In Canada, the rugby union rules were also modified over the years. Thank you for a much needed video! It seems there can‘t be a single video on KZbin about American (or Australian, or Canadian, or Gaelic, etc.) football or soccer without somebody getting their nose out of joint because people are using their own local terms for the sports rather than what that particular commenter thinks they should be called. It‘s obnoxious and serves no purpose other than masturbatory cultural imperialism.

The right to the first competition - that is to say for the winter 1901/1902 season - is granted to rugby football clubs.”

Great Video mate, really enjoyed it . I think something that is very interesting is the link between Aussie Rules, and the indigenous game ‘Marngrook’. There are many interesting theories about this, and it is made even more interesting that Tom Wills, one of the founders of Aussie Rules, had close relationships as a child with indigenous communities, likely playing it with them. It’s all very interesting, and if it was inspired by this, chances are ‘Marngrook’ would have been played for thousands of years. Once again, great video 👍

I actually did part of my degree on this exact differentiation. There was also forms of football played in English villages where the aim was to get the ball past the church tower in the opposing village, whoever got the ball there first wins, but you'd have the whole village population against the other village. The modern forms of football we talk about today and how they all evolved separately is more about separate groups of kids playing football rather than countries and associations. I describe it to people by saying imagine the game hide and seek, each group of kids will have tiny variations to the rules but in essence they're the same game. This is how football was for so many years until groups started actually writing down official rules like Sheffield rules football and Eton rules. The FA and the RFU governing bodies would be like two groups of people setting up official institutions to govern the game hide and seek but how they play it, rather than how other people play it. The history is very interesting and it's much more locally based in schools and youth groups than this video makes out. Though I'm sure Ninh knows this already

I actually do. It was part of my degree course also. "Football" is a generic term that refers to a group of related sports in which the object of the game is to move a ball to the opposing team's end of the field and score by putting the ball into a goal area. The name comes from the fact that the game is played on foot (rather than on horseback) and with a single ball. Various codes of football have sprung up around the world, each differing in the nature of the goal area, how you're allowed to advance the ball, and the amount of contact allowed. But they're all a form of football. In general, the most popular code of football within a country is colloquially called simply football while all other codes use some alternative name.

Actually, in Australia, "football" and/or "footy" is not nationally defined, per se. On one side of the "Barassi Line" (essentially cutting the country into NSW/Queensland and "the rest"), in NSW/QLD "footy" or "football", as in going to watch the "football" most likely refers to rugby league which is more popular than Aussie Rules. In the other states, "footy" refers exclusively to Australian Football. In Aus, rugby union is the sole "rugby" or sometimes shortened to "union", while rugby league (in particular the NRL) is either shortened to footy or league. This particular debate is based on the most popular leagues of their capital cities or state. In NSW, the NSW Rugby (Football) League was the most popular league of any code. Brisbane and Queensland had their own league too but often players moved to NSW for better opportunities. In Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, the VFL, SANFL and WAFL were the most popular leagues in the state, focused around "Aussie" rules with suburban teams competing. Those leagues were the ones that had the most coverage in newspapers, radio and then TV. In the 1980s, the NSWRL began expanding out of Sydney into other NSW towns, then Canberra and Queensland. The VFL began looking to the other states as well. In the 1990s, the VFL became the Australian Football League, and the NSWRL premiership became the Australian Rugby League, later to merge into the National Rugby League after the Super League War. At the time, both leagues/codes had teams across several states, and for league even in New Zealand. Tl;dr good luck with "football"/"footy" in Australia

It is pretty complicated in Australia these days. When I was a kid in Sydney 30 years ago it was simpler; football or footy meant rugby league or union (depending on context), the round ball game was soccer, and Aussie Rules was something we saw as an oddity from the southern states. In the southern states it was the other way around. Things got complex when Aussie rules and rugby league both spread into "foreign" states, and soccer fans decided that "soccer" was demeaning and insisted that their game could only be called football from now on.
@Jivvi

Most people I've come into contact with here (Sydney) say "footy" or "league" for rugby league, "football" or "soccer" for association football, "rugby" for rugby union (or "union" if they're rugby league fans) and "AFL" or "Aussie Rules" for Australian football, even if they're just talking about the sport in general and not the actual AFL. It sounds kind of strange, but to most people here, "footy" and "football" are not the same sport, although they might use both to refer to Australian football if they grew up somewhere it was more popular than it is here.

Nice to see a Brit who isn’t weirdly territorial of the word ‘football’. I’m Scottish so I’ve grown up with association football being football. I’m also a massive fan of American football and I refer to it as football for simplicity’s sake depending on who I’m talking to. A lot of folks get really aggressive about this though and even though they know I mean American football, demand that I put the American in front of it. If I’m talking about association football, I’ll also call it football because most folks know what I mean but if ever I need to differentiate between them, I’ll refer to American football as American football and association football as European football (even though it’s not strictly European but it makes more sense than association football to most and I will not say soccer). I’m going on a tangent. My point is, I don’t understand why it’s such a big issue and why there needs to be a claim on the word ‘football’.

Great video and one to bring out during any cross-continental arguments. However, the situation in Australia is more nuanced than he says. Depending on where you grow up and your background Football could refer to one of four things, or the "four codes of football". The reason that there are many sports which share the same name "football" it's because each one is a modern variant of Medieval football which doesn't have any rules. I love Cuju an old variant of association football made in China during the Han dynasty. About Calcio Storico, this is an ancestor of all modern football games. People in Italy played that sport when the British played Medieval football. The reason that association football is called "calcio" (or calcio moderno) in Italy it's because Italy was dominated by the Facism Regim which doesn't allow the Italian language to import foreign words. So they may call it "football" or "calcio" when they talk but only "calcio" when they write a document about this game. About rugby, "Rugby" is basically the name of the school and the town where this football was created. Tody "rugby" more refers to the sport than the town. Thanks for this video, I just love it.

I am swiss. When talking german: "Fussball" is association football, "Rugby" is rugby, "American Football" is American football, "Australian Football" is Australian football, "Canadian Football" is Canadian football and "Gaelic Football" is Gaelic football. When Talking english I mostly use just football when talking about the Australian version (because it's my favorite kind of football) and I use soccer to talk about Association football. For the other four I use the same names I use in german.

The indigenous people of western Victoria , Australia were observed by Tom Wills ( the founder of Australian Rules Football ) in the mid 1800's playing a game they called Marngrook . The game involved kicking and catching a ball made from bundled up animal pelts . So perhaps that game is the original form of football - possibly many thousands of years old . Australian Rules Football has components of other football codes and no doubt "Marngrook" is the one vital ingredient that makes Aussie Rules so unique and such a an exciting game to play and watch .

Yes, the Marngrook idea was always perpetuated as being the inspiration to Tom Wills, but never actually proven. Would be cool though.

In a way, your culture AND your subculture makes it "football." I'm a big soccer fan, I'm American*, I love the game, and I say that word "soccer" with immense pride. But I do recall an online conversation with an Australian fan of the game who insisted that the word "soccer" is only used by the haters, and that association "football" is the one true football. *I like American football. But I love the Pittsburgh Steelers more than the game itself.
@NinhLyUK

Yes, I'll agree with that. Culture and subculture sometimes defines what football is. But the haters out there are always going to argue the toss why everyone else is wrong and they're right.

What about Marn Grook? The inspiration for Aussie Rules Footy played by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years. Some say that Tom Wills, the founder of rules, often use to watch Indigenous Australians play Marn Grook. The first ever recorded match of Aussie Rules was played between 2 elite private schools in Melbourne; Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar in 1858
@NinhLyUK

I read about Marngrook. Whilst it existed at the time, there's no extensive proof that this was the inspiration for Tom Wills to codify Aussie Rules Football. If it were proven true, then that would be sweet. But generally, historians agree that Tom Wills most likely got the inspiration from Rugby, of where he was educated.

She said the correct translation of the german word: "Fussball" (which is soccer) would be football, I said football is every sport that can be played with only a ball, feet and an certain area. Now she owes me an evenig at the cinema including popcorn and drink. And by the way: What's about Tlachli? This is Atztec sport, where the goal is to get a ball through a ring of stone about 3 meters above the sandy ground, only contanting the ball by feet shoulders, head and butt and the loser gets sacrificed to some ineffabel god? I always thought this to be the oldest variation of football.

Sweet. Enjoy your winnings. As far as Tlachli is concerned - there's not as solid a proof that this was the game as it was played. A lot of hypothesis surrounds it, but very little actual proof.
