In times where there was common Polo and sports played on horses they used the term football to differentiate, so the American football it's called Gridiron Football, the tradicional from England is called Association Football or "soccer" as English people used to called back in the days, and the famous one in Australia is Rugby Football, and we have the Gaelic Football to where is used foot and hands, all these are football and to differentiate I think that non Americans should refer to the American one as Gridiron and accept when they called soccer too. Help me out here. When a player catches the ball and gets tackled, where is the ball spotted? I’ve noticed in some games, that the ball is spotted where the receiver hits the ground with his body and not necessarily where the ball is. For instance, if a player is outstretched, the ball seems to be spotted where his knees hit the ground first. Not where the ball is, which can be 2ft-3ft from where his body hit the ground. Am I hallucinating?
@DankDunny8 күн бұрын
@ LMFAO Josh Allen and the bills got robbed last night with that TERRIBLE SPOT. No you’re not hallucinating, the ball is spotted down wherever the ball is on the body when the body is down. So when your knee is down but your reaching the ball with your arms, the spot is where the ball is on your arm where the knee is down. Make sense? Do you think the refs “rigged” last nights game? Lots of questionable decisions. Keep in mind that a coach can challenge the spot with replay review. Last night the refs did a replay review before a coach challenge because they disagreed with the spot. After replay, the still deemed Josh Allen short of the first down. Total bullshit imo
@scottrichard65798 күн бұрын
@@DankDunny No I don’t think it’s rigged. But I am a Chiefs fan, sooooo? 🤔 But it’s not the just the Chiefs. I’ve seen it in other NFL games. Isn’t the NFL made up of all the owners? So wouldn’t all of the owners be in on it? I don’t think that would ever happen.🤷🏻

This is just a primer (albeit a ver good one). There are a multitude of variables and nuances that make the game increasingly exciting as you learn. Sort of like chess. Once you learn the basics, following along and calculating strategy with “your team” adds another level of enjoyment (and frustration). One thing that used to be frowned upon by football purists is the tendency for some people to “bandwagon.” That is, to choose a new team every season based solely upon performance. Personally, I think this greatly diminishes the joy of the game, but to each his own. Sometimes it’s hard being a fan - especially when your team goes years or decades between playoff appearances, championships, and/or Super Bowls (the big game that pits the best performer from each conference against one another for a trophy and big payday). See? More to learn. 😎

As an American, I hate how misunderstood American football is because it's legitimately the most captivating (and complex not to mention team oriented (water polo is a close second alongside basketball and hockey)) sport. I've been watching football since I was about 7 years old in 1980. Ive watched literally thousands of games and I like to think I know the rules pretty well. But I never really thought about just how complicated the game is until I watched this video. This is a 10 minute video and while it covers the most important stuff, there's SO much more to it. Honestly I'm shocked that American football has been gaining in popularity around the world - it's such an insane game to learn. I have friends who think hockey is hard to understand (it isn't) so I can't imagine what people from other countries think of this sport and yet still become fans of it. Maybe they like it because it's so insanely complicated?
@LurksLessons2 жыл бұрын
Solid insight and I appreciate you comments! My take on why the sport has grown in popularity so much throughout the years compared to other professional sports is because of the scarcity of the amount of games played in a single season (17). Compared to the rest of the Pro Leagues in America like the NBA (82), MLB (162) and NHL (82), Major League Soccer is the second least with 32 games. Because of that, each game comes with that much weight whether your team wins or loses. Plus, the time in between games is weekly, so that plays in effect of heightened anticipation of when your team plays next. With the scarcity of the games as its backdrop, you add the strategy and athletic prowess, you got yourself an incredible marketable product. TV coverage only adds fuel to that fire but that's my opinion on the matter. But you are absolutely right that it's a hard game to comprehend. I intend to create another video down the road that goes over plays and defensive coverages to also help people learn what they're watching. 😎

if you've ever tried to explain it, or thought about explaining it, it makes a person realize the complexity of the sport. this presentation is a great tool.
@Electric_ Жыл бұрын
@@LurksLessonsI think too the complexity does help it become more popular. Once a person gets over the initial hurdle of learning the basics, it’s entertaining to watch, while at the same time they can continue to learn things for years. It’s very satisfying to get to a point where you can come up with your own ideas of what a team should do next strategically, and turn out to be correct. Fantasy football also is easily the most fun fantasy sport, and sucks people into the game. My sister got very into football by participating in an office fantasy league one year for the heck of it, and the satisfaction of winning and agony of defeat made lead her to study the game in more detail to make optimal roster decisions each week.

Thank you for this - I’ve moved to the US recently from Australia and am a massive NRL fan back home, but have always wanted to get into the NFL but from Aus it’s fairly challenging from a timezone standpoint and I never had a good enough explanation of the rules, so I’ve found it hard to get into. But since moving I’ve been following in the 49s through the first few weeks and quite enjoying it. The NRL actually has a habit of taking ideas from the NFL, so it has some feelings of familiarity in areas because the NRL uses downs like the NFL instead of the messier rucks of Rugby Union. We’ve even had people suggest that we allow one forward pass per tackle in the NRL! One thing I never really understood was why teams didn’t pass laterally much, but the position breakdown here massively clarifies that.
@LurksLessons Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing! Super insightful and I hope that now you can enjoy the rest of the season following the 49ers while you're here stateside. Laterally pass plays are definitely in the playbook for most teams, it's just not used as often as oppose to a forward pass plays that occur downfield. It honestly just depends on what the defensive scheme is laid out for the play to work. You ROCK! 😎
@trevorjameson3213 Жыл бұрын
Lateral passes in american football are legal of course, but rare these days because the defenders are usually right on top of the offensive player very quickly, and so a lateral pass is usually extremely risky, or not even needed. But sometimes, if a team is losing by only one score, and time in the game is running out, they may, as a last resort, use one or more lateral passes during the run to try their best to score. But it usually doesn't work. I've been watching american football my whole life and only seen lateral passes a few times in the past 50 years. The most successful offensive plays involve good running and good passing by the quarterback. Both are much safer ways to move the ball, as opposed to a player trying make a lateral pass. That's why you almost never see it. Of course it's very common and a main part of Rugby play, but the games are so different you know.

One thing I would have to say is that blitz is anytime the defense rushes more people than there blockers. This could be any combination of defensive lineman, linebackers, and corners and rarely requires all three groups. What the video described is what is called an all out blitz

An offensive line has five players, all who block. If a defense rushes 5 or more players it’s a blitz. It doesn’t matter if any other offensive players stay in to block

I'm Brazilian and love this sport, also know English but it's hard to find a good video about it to show to my friends here, but this one is perfect and the automatic translation is pretty good. Being Brazilian I wanna add just the historical fact that end one of the big discussions between Americans and British (and Brazilians too): Football is a group or family of sports played on foot. I personally think "Gridball" is pretty catchy heheh
@jamesboddington95652 жыл бұрын
Regarding Australia, the biggest football code there Australian Rules or AFL which is a completely different game to rugby. I'm an avid AFL or 'Aussie Rules' fan but American Football is my go to game in our off season. I highly recommend American football fans suffering withdrawal symptoms in your summer check out AFL

There’s actually a delay of game on the defense too. Look at the Colts-Vikings game for example where a Vikings receiver (which I think was Justin Jefferson) catches the ball and gets held down by Colts defenders while trying to give the ball to the official. That set up a game winning field goal at the end.

Excellent hot take here. This is true but it rarely happens, hence why I didn't put it in the video. Love that you mentioned it here though, you ROCK!

There’s a ton of stuff that was oversimplified just for the sake of it not being a 16 hour video lol. Penalties aren’t always from the previous spot for instance. It’s different on passing plays and running plays, and there’s loads of special enforcements. It’s really crazy how complicated it is. Coming from a college football official.

Did I miss the part about how defense can score through a safety? It is scoring and is the only scoring option special to the defense. For those reading this comment not knowing what I am talking about, a safety is when a defensive player tackles a offensive player who has the ball in the endzone behind the quarterback/offensive line. This is especially devastating to a team because while a safety is only two points the team that was scored on must then kick/punt the ball to the opposing teams, special teams and offensive so they can attempt to score even more points after that team's defense just scored two points.

This is the best american football explanation on YT. Many important details were missed in other videos. Here's everything. Now I know that there's chance to get another four down when attaking team score 10 yards in one down. I never seen a match where team want to score another two point after takedown. They're usually kick the ball and that's it. I think the hardest thing in watching football is just spotting all those thing. Sometime I don't know what's going on and who has the ball. As I motion designer myself I rally like this animation. A lot of work, great visual style and dynamic. I have a question; I saw a match where touchdown was scored without a ball touching the ground. They scored 1 point. So a playet must touch the ground to score full 6 points?
@MooseGooseThe1st2 жыл бұрын
im a little late, but yes, players to do have touch the ground to score. If a receiver(the guy who catches the ball) catches the ball while going out of play, he only has to drag his feet in bounds(or in play)

Great tips to expand on! I did put in the video description a basic explanation of the Offensive positions when it comes to TE and WR, but breaking the plane for a TD and what constitutes a 1st down to move the chains could be great topics to cover in maybe a future 2 Minute Drill video. Thanks dude! Honestly buddy, a WR blocks on designed running plays and on passing plays, you run a pre-determined route downfield. If the QB thinks you're open then they'll pass you the ball. After catching it, you run downfield and score! That's essentially the basics of the position. I do intend to release a video on the positions only for Football this coming fall but won't do a deep dive into all of the responsibilities. Hope that helps and good luck this season! Do your best and improve on what you did the day before and you'll crush the competition!

I like this video in terms of explaining the basics, although in terms of delay of game, the defense can technically be penalized as well due to keeping the offense from setting up the next play. A good example of this was during the ending of the largest comeback in NFL History between the Vikings and the Colts. On the final drive during the entire game, Vikings QB Kirk Cousins made a pass to Wide Receiver Justin Jefferson to set up the game winning field goal try, however the guy who impeded Jefferson from handing the ball back to the refs to set up the next play, Ifeadi odenigbo, was holding him down despite the whistle blowing the end of the play, thereby delaying the game and setting the Vikings up to win. Honestly, that game was the first time I saw that happen so I don't know if this happens often.
@LurksLessons Жыл бұрын
Love this. Solid take and wonderful example to help illustrate that yes, the Defense can be called the Delay of Game penalty. I purposefully chose not to include that the Defense can also be penalized in the video because it does happen rarely and also I wanted the beginner viewer to be taught what they would commonly see in a game, thus only talking about the Offense Delay of Game penalty. Thank you again for this additional input, you ROCK!
