From what I understand, when ceramic shatters it also causes really fine points. That small point is enough to release the energy stored in the glass.

I don't have any experience with this, but I'm pretty sure the most reliable way is using a mallet (or even just a piece of wood) with the ceramic. This way you can hit exactly where you want, and most importantly with a sharp tip of the ceramic, which is critical to breaking the glass.

Prob'ly not the first time as you didn't smash them enough - the sharp edge has to come into contact with the glass to break it and your pieces still had a lot of smooth edges.

Works best if you use some chewed gum to stick a piece to a hammer. Then it just takes a light hit on the window and it will shatter first strike every time.

Most likely the mechanical properties of the aluminium oxide ceramic, it's a hell of a lot harder than rock (even obsidian I'd wager) and still shatters far, far sharper than stone (in this case, not so sure about the obsidian comparison) and also hardens upon impact rather than tending to chip or falter. All-in-all, their ability to concentrate force onto a single RIDICULOUSLY small point is unprecedented considering how easy they are to acquire.

Tiger Lily Kitty you could reach in & unlock the doors, but there would be a lot of glass around. If you had to, the glass pretty much falls down, so break the window farthest away and unlock the door.

I doubt you'll have a random spark plug in your pocket if you locked your kid/dog in the car. The car's antenna is your most likely solution...just hold about 6 inches of flat against the window and pull back on it so it smacks the window.

I googled it and this is the reason; "Because of the 'negative charge' of the ceramic - when it meets the window with the 'positive charge' it causes a reaction..."

Nearly any type of ceramic will work. Porcelain, ceramic tiles, insulators, and of course sparkplugs. Spark plugs work the best because they are made of high grade ceramic that is extremely hard.

Small pieces work best I found out about this in the early 90s you want the sharp edge to hit its amazing how little it takes. Had a friend call BS I gave him a small piece and said throw it at your window he under handed it at the windshield it chiped it. I said why the windshield he said I thought it was BS well winter came and the defrost took that chip and cracked the whole length. If you want to get at the guy riding your ass in traffic just handfull some out the window but that is road rage. Not recommended but has been done by an idiot kid.

We call it 'smash and grab' - criminals attached a spark plug to string and fling it on your window whilst you wait for the traffic signals and they will grab your handbag in the front seat etc. To combat this many peopl fit anti-smash and grab window tints ( your window still breaks but does not shatter so it's a deterrent )

Why does it matter if the plug has been used or not? It works with any hard peice of ceramic with sharp edges. I tried a ceramic shard from a broken high voltage insulator. That also works.

@@TruckNerd I’m not saying you should have washed the entire car just a small section of window. Because a fine tip of the ceramic needs to cleanly hit the glass. If the window is clean you literally only have to lightly toss the piece at the glass and it shatters but because of all the dirt you had to throw it super hard

It would make sense that a smaller hammer would be easier as the glass is made to disperse the impact of the object throughout the glass. With the ceramic you get a smaller impact point down to the microscopic level, thus giving the glass not much area to disperse the energy to. Larger surface area equals less force per square inch, smaller surface area concentrates the energy to a point, giving it a higher force per square inch
