My pick for the director for this EPIC story would have to be: Gareth Evans. He has directed both Raid films for those who aren't familiar with his work & he has the absolute talent to see this through. Also, this film should be split into 2 films as well. Now imagine the turtle fight sequences from the badass fight choreography team from those Raid films. Imagine. I just need to live that much longer now.

The thing that scares me is that when people say "adult," while it can mean "dealing with heavier themes" it often means "gratuitously violent and profanity laden." And I can easily see a Last Ronin movie turning into something that's either supposed to be pointlessly subversive towards the 88' cartoon or turned into the live action version of "did you know the Ninja Turtles used to kill and cuss" version that people who've never read the Mirage Comics version swear it is. And that would be a waste of film. My hope is that they're paying attention to the first live-action movie when planning this out and writing the script. Not only for the wonderful Henson costumes and animatronic heads, but for how to go about telling a more thematically darker film without relying on the Turtles being able to cuss and kill/bleed on screen. While it has its silly moments and they are memorable, it still had darker moments and themes like Raph's anger issues, the Turtles coming to terms with Splinter's apparent death, Raphael's near-death beating at the hands of the Foot, April losing the 2nd Time Around Store/her home, Casey being willing to kill, and the cycle of revenge. So hopefully that's the direction they'll be going. I just hope the script tries to be more than the lowest standard of "adult" in media/cinema.

I have the exact same thoughts and cautions. The thing with TMNT is that it's a franchise whose crazy sci-fi and martial arts quality is what has made it stand out the test of time. And while it has been grounded in the past, it has often kept a lighthearted tone. That's why The Last Ronin movie is going to be a difficult and an uphill task to make it compelling and believable, not just going off with the idiotic cliches of cheap blood and cuss, which is what that Winnie the Pooh horror flick did poorly. Hopefully, with the right direction, they can avoid landing in those cliches

I'm shocked.. less so that an R rated version is being made, but a LIVE ACTION one at that. I thought for sure it would be animated. If I'm not mistaken, live action requires a much larger budget, which makes it a much bigger risk for the studio. I think there is an audience for this though. Just look at how well Logan and Deadpool did. I myself don't see the appeal of an R rated Ninja Turtles. Will blood and F bombs actually make this a better movie? I'm open minded though. But for anyone who's ever said they want an R rated turtles movie, they better go to the theaters to see this, because if this isn't financially successful, movie studios will be less likely to do this again.

The Last Ronin should have been an adult animated series. I love the comic and think it would work so much better in animation. Not only because of the fact that a turtle is the protagonist, but the dystopian future might also be tough to pull off in live action.
