What I find a bit amusing is how everyone comments on the sameness as the original controllers. What most people don't realize is they still have the original production molds it's not hard to modify them to fit the wireless architecture. And if they are making new molds... 6:25 The reason for that is simple, if dumb: Rumble was never _released_ in the North American version of Mario 64. It was added afterwards in a Japanese only rerelease that also did things like removing backwards long jump and replacing, "so long-ay Bowser," with, "Bye-Bye." This is why the Super Mario 3D All Stars version has these changes; they used the NA script on the Japanese ROM. Likely with this version they wanted to have the localisations that actually existed at the time, so they used an NA ROM that had no rumble support.

That joystick is going to have the same exact issue the original had. There's a little nub that rests in a plastic bowl inside the joystick so that the spring can give it tension. That nub gets ground down into a powder especially if you play something like Smash or Mario Party. Also the black plastic levers (if you want to call them that) have slots that the joystick rests in and those will wear quickly as well causing a huge deadzone. They really should be making the internals out of delrin at this point if they want to mitigate most of these problems.

The rumble in the original n64 pak was suspended much lower, that created leverage and a greater rumble effect was achieved. If you mod a pak to run off the n64 power instead of batteries, it will shake nearly out of your hands, the heavy feedback moments are intense. It's bc the leverage. They dropped the ball w the design keeping the motor right there, they'd need a massive motor w offset weight to recreate the feeling well. Probably will last longer though so, maybe the better choice.

I still can't believe they managed to downgrade the thumbstick. I never thought it was possible. Edit: It's the same exact thumbstick mechanics as found on the original N64. It will lose stick strength and will flop around because they didn't change the spring-like mechanism. What they did change, however, was how it detects the stick's position. The original uses a light sensor and automatically calibrates to zero every time the console starts up. The new controller utilizes potentiometers, which is the hardware in controllers infamous for stick drift, like the Nintendo Switch. So not only will your thumbstick flop around if you play Mario Party for a while, but it also won't read zero either. They should have went with hall effect.

The rumble motor in this controller is sexy. When it connects to the system it practically purrs with how the motor sounds

Looking forward (hopefully) to all the various colors. As a kid in a lower-middle-class family, we were basically stuck with the plain black console and grey controller. I always wanted one of the yellow controllers. Adult me can splurge lol

Rumble didn't come out until Starfox. That's why Mario didn't have rumble. Pretty nostalgically and applicatoraly accurate.

People think the controller is weird with its shape. I love it, it feels so good to hold it. The way the weight is distributed, the midle being slightly thicker where the Z--button resides Its a very long time since i held one...
@IncredibleMrZ2 жыл бұрын
It's probably already in here somewhere but the joystick is completely different mechanical technology from the OG N64 controller and is pretty standard by today's metrics. I wouldn't expect any mechanical failures from it over what any other controller is going to suffer from. The OG tech was a pin in a groove that slid in an arch. Lots of friction and any debree got turned in to grinding powder that made the slot bigger and bigger. I would not be surprised at all if the new controller could be used for a direct replacement in an OG controller, just with a plug swap. They're all potentiometers anyway.

I almost threw up when I saw the input lag for OoT. To see that amount of input lag for my favorite game game of all time and that I have put many hours into makes me sick. It's almost unplayable! I'm only upset because this is one of Nintendo's flagship games on their best console with an official controller that they made. Taking that into consideration, you would expect the quality to be so much higher.

Great review. I was lucky to get the n64 new controller on the 2nd release. I got the expansion pack the first day as I was looking forward to Mario Tennis on N64 with the new controller which works really well with the games. I put a switch skull & co. thumb stick cover on the analog stick and it made all the different. Now the analog stick is easy to use. I saw Bob’s review and his analog stick repair, I think he had to use his sauter gun, lol. He is a techi and I’m not. I wouldn’t dare open a controller as I’m sure something would go wrong when I’m putting back together.

As someone who doesn't play online and just wants to play ocarina of time, majora's mask, and maybe Star Fox...I wish they just bundled this controller with a one time purchase of the N64 expansion pack instead of the subscription model they're currently using.

I think the weirdest part of these new Expansion Pack controllers is that they did the 3-Button Genesis controllers instead of the 6-Button. The 3-Button Genesis pad is... not so good. 6-Button's pretty good, though.

Nintendos business model should be "Nintendo supporting the scalping market one piece at a time."
@scarffoxandfriends94013 жыл бұрын
🤷♂️ This is the only electronic product that limits the sales of users to help mitigate scalping. Even more so than the PS5/Switch raffle systems. Omg, Nintendo and Sony put aside a couple thousand consoles in specific regions, that will certainly stop the scalping of a product they produce in the millions.

Ok, I’m glad he did the test with an actual 64 while talking about input lag, because I definitely remember some games on that being slightly less responsive than you might ideally like them to be.

I don't think Nintendo was worried about durability of the analog stick on the new N64 online controllers as it shouldn't see as much use as it isn't meant to be the primary controller of the system. They were more concerned about recreating the original experience. It really shows how far they have come since then.

I never had durability problems with my old N64 analog sticks. The question for me with these new ones is if they're doomed to drift down the line? I'm going to wait and see. If they are, then they're a complete waste of money. I don't care if Nintendo is willing to fix them for free.
@buchiklop1103 жыл бұрын
@@jaylucien669 Every analog stick is prone to drift. It's not a problem invented by the JoyCons. There are PS5 and XBox Series controllers that have experienced drift months after release.
