In fencing, there are three blades: Epee, Foil, and Sabre. Here, they're fencing Foil. In fencing, you have both electric fencing (where the fencers are hooked up to a light that lights up when there's an on-target hit) and steam, seen here. Foil has the lightest blade and the smallest target of the three blades. In foil, you have to strike the torso of your opponent with the tip of your blade. If both fencers hit on-target, whoever initiated the attack gets the point. This is called Right of Way, and whoever has right of way gets the point. You lose right of way if you are parried or if you miss. Parrying is when you use your blade to deflect an opponent's attack. This is the defensive equivalent to a Beat, which is when you hit the opponent's blade (or beat it) to knock it out of the way and enable you to attack. Epee is the simplest of the three blades. Like foil, you have to hit with the tip of your blade. Unlike foil, however, the entire body (and head) is a valid target, and there is no right of way. This means that if there are two simultaneous hits, both fencers score a point. Sabre (my blade) differs from foil and epee in that you can hit the opponent with the entirety of the blade, rather than just the tip. Everything above the legs is a valid target, and sabre has right of way like foil. Unlike foil and epee, in sabre you hold the blade vertically.

I did foil fencing for a few months as a kid, this was respectful of the artform and overall I'm impressed with what they were able to learn in a short time. I'm from Canada so I learned it as: En Garde, Êtes-Vous Prêt, Allez. I ended up quitting because the level of people around me was improving and I wasn't because I kept trying to plan out my moves before the round started and then it didn't turn out as I expected and I kept losing. 🤣
